1) Phoenix Suns select Magic Johnson SF 6'8'' 215 19 A- C A- C A- A
Listed as a small forward, but able to play point guard, Magic has among the best starting ratings of any player in BBS history.
Despite his clear weaknesses of shooting threes and perimeter defense, Magic edges out Bird because of his tremendous strengths elsewhere.
The big question is whether or not a team will opt for the more complete Larry Bird with the top pick.
To me, Magic is the pick.
2) Orlando Magic select Larry Bird PF 6'9'' 220 21 B+ B+ B+ C B+ A
Not much explanation needed here. If BIrd goes 1st, Magic goes 2nd if Magic goes 1st, Bird goes 2nd.
Anyone who disagrees with this logic should check themselves in to the local mental institution.
3) Boston Celtics select Mychal Thompson C 6'10'' 226 23 B C- D+ B- B- A
There are a lot of potential third overall picks, but Thompson seems to be the best choice given how hard it is to come by good big men.
His poor shooting is a detriment, but he looks to be on the verge of being very good in every other area.
This pick could go in a variety of ways, but if it were me, I'd be taking Thompson.
4) New York Knicks select Reggie Theus SG 6'7'' 190 21 B- B B+ C C- A
Whenever notes say "can never be moved to PG", I assume that they'll be a stud.
Regardless of that tidbit, Theus looks to be a solid player and the "deadly from midrange" note certainly doesn't hurt.
If he can't be moved to PG, I really doubt that his handling issues are as bad as advertised.
5) Washington Wizards select Maurice Cheeks PG 6'1'' 180 22 B C B- A- C- A
Cheeks looks like an awesomely unique point guard prospect. Tough, strong, hard-nosed defender who can handle the ball.
If I was contending for a championship, he'd be the perfect fourth or fifth starter to run a successful team.
I'm quite high on him, however, I doubt that he has the potential to be a top-5 player at his position.
6) Dallas Mavericks select Gerald Henderson PG 6'2'' 175 22 C+ B- B- A- C B
Like Cheeks, Henderson looks to be a solid point guard prospect for a competing team.
He looks like he can do a little bit of everything and with some RCs and ACs, could become a very complete player.
The most appealing thing about Henderson is his rebounding, which is coveted at the point guard position.
7) Toronto Raptors select Mike Mitchell SF 6'7'' 215 22 A- C+ C- C+ C+ B
Mitchell looks like a future stud at the point guard position. He has good handles and an incredible inside game according to his notes and that's enough to sell a team on taking him in the top-10.
Personally, I wouldn't be shocked if he averaged 18-20 ppg as a third option in an inside offense right now.
He's a plus rebounder at SF and could probably succeed at SG as well in the right system.
Definitely a top-10 pick.
8) Golden State Warriors select Purvis Short SF 6'7'' 210 21 B B C C C A
Besides his defense, Short looks like an incredibly well-rounded player who could eventually become an offensive force.
It's doubtful that Short has what it takes to overcome his weakness and become an all-star type, but he's definitely a good looking player already.
Certainly not a bad consolation prize if you're in the top-10.
9) Detroit Pistons select Clemon Johnson C 6'10'' 240 22 B- D+ C- A- C+ B
Johnson is a huge defensive force up front. If his rebounding was better, he could've gone as high as top-5, but instead, he'll be a mid to late lotto selection.
His notes indicate that he's strong, which leads me to believe that he can be a decent inside scorer with some work.
Tough to turn down a defensive big man if the opportunity arises to draft one.
10) Houston Rockets select James Hardy PF 6'8'' 220 21 B C C- B+ C+ B
Hardy looks like the second-best power forward behind Bird.
He's versatile and can do a little bit of everything.
He also has really favorable starting ratings and if he can increase his rebounding, he'll be a potential starter right off the bat.
11) Miami Heat select Rick Robey C 6'11'' 230 22 B- C C- B B+ B
Despite not being a stats defender, Robey looks like he'll be a really solid backup big man who can crash the boards and defend the post well.
He also looks like a plus offensive player who has a solid jump shot and good inside scoring abilities.
Without being able to block, he'll need to get his inside scoring up to at least a B or possibly B+ to become a starter unless he gets up to A rebounding first.
12) San Antonio Spurs select Dave Corzine C 6'11'' 250 22 C+ C C- B+ C+ A
The Spurs need the best player available and Corzine is it.
Corzine can block shots and has a nice jump shot.
The Spurs don't need anyone spectacular here, just the best possible player to plug into what they hope to be a contending team in the near future.
13) The Orlando Magic select Phil Ford PG 6'2'' 175 22 B- C B C+ D+ B
Ford projects as an efficient player. Strong inside game, nice jump shot and handling.
These are the sort of intangibles that Repole will want in a player and Ford looks to be the best prospect available at this point in the draft.
