You are the new guy in town. What made you want to join BBS? Name 2 things that make BBS different than other sim leagues you have been in?
I know a few GMs who are in or have been in BBS in the past and all of them say that this is the best league out there as well as the toughest league out there. That was the biggest reason as to why I wanted to join. As far as differences go, I haven’t seen a ProBoards league since the mid-2000s so that is the first thing that comes to mind (all my current leagues use Jcink). The other thing is the rules (mainly the tanking rules). I usually get 2-3 very good players and surround them with guys who have no business being in the league (leftover FAs with low percentages, low steals/blocks/rebounds, high turnovers). Obviously that is not allowed here (that is a good thing for the league imo) which will make this season a major challenge for me (need to unload my good/mediocre players around Barnes/Scott ASAP).
How does the existence of the contract year affect your gming style?
Most leagues I am in have a CY (currently in three, all of them have it) but I really do not worry about it much. I honestly feel like if I actually tried, then I would be able to win easy. Don’t mean to sound cocky but if I thought otherwise, I would not even be in sim leagues.
The Grizz and Hawks are in their cy year; what are both of their chances of making their cy?
With so many teams trying to lose, their chances increase. Right now as their teams are currently constructed, I feel like both have to make moves to guarantee themselves to get there. Memphis is probably closer but should be interesting to see what Atlanta does.
Gms always try to rip off the newbie. Who came at you the hardest?
I really have not gotten that many offers. Seems like nobody really wants anything here. Could be because I have said that Barnes is not moving.
What are your plans for the year; are you going to try to make the playoffs?
I want to unload everything around Scott/Barnes asap. I want as crappy of a supporting cast as the rules would possibly allow. I want to lose and I want to get another high pick. I’m sure I easily make the playoffs if I made a couple of moves BUT I don’t see any fun in that since actually competing for a title does not seem likely (unless I rape hard). If I am not competing for a title or if I am not tanking, then I am really heading nowhere and it is no fun for me.
Walk me through the logic of the Charlie Scott case. From where I sit Scott will be a problem if you want to tank?
My logic was simple, get value for that Detroit pick. I am rebuilding so I am in asset collection mode and Scott is a better asset than that pick (as that team was). He only had a couple of pieces under 30 and I felt like Scott alongside Barnes and Maxwell would be a nice core to build around. I was hoping to do the pick for Scott straight up type deal but YES YES YES was not budging. The guys I gave up were not a part of my future plans and I really don’t care much for that lotto protected first since they are usually very hit or miss. Could end up regretting it but I think it was a decent deal at the very least.
How do you like to set up a bbs team?
Right now I am trying to collect assets and once my team is built, I will figure out what direction I go in from there. I realize that there are a lot of successful strategies BUT my IDEAL team consists of a superstar PG (one who scores efficiently, rarely turns the ball over and gets steals), two wings who score a lot and efficiently, get steals (if I am lucky blocks as well) and bigs who block a ton of shots and shoot high FG%/FT% as well as depth. Running a very fast pace outside offense. Not saying that is how I will build this particular team (that depends on the personnel I am able to acquire) but that is just what my ideal team tends to consist of. It is a strategy which works (at least it has for me in the past). Regardless, what BBS team I actually end up building, we will see.
Was the Ced Maxwell pick a no-brainer? Who else did you consider?
Of the top prospects, I really liked him, King, Johnson and Copper. With the other three gone, the choice seemed pretty obvious. Nixon looked nice but I’m not a fan of PGs who don’t get steals, similar with Sickma who went first (bigs who don’t get a lot of blocks, though had I gotten second, I probably would have taken Sickma due to value). Tyler interested me A LOT but I wasn’t sure if he would ever develop offensively and figured that he wouldn’t be of that high value (as a top five pick). Johnson/Cooper/Maxwell seemed like well-rounded players, I loved all of their notes and pretty sure everybody knew that King would be a stud (at the very least, his name and scoring ability would have high value). Maxwell’s first TC was not good (no changes) but I am hoping he retained whatever potential he had.
Have you thought about trading Barnes? What would it take to make you give him up? How will it affect your rebuild if Barnes doesn't resign ?
I really like Barnes. He has everything I look for in a big. I would only trade him if I were to rape hard and with him being expiring, that does not look likely. Losing him would probably set me back a lot, just hoping I can get him back.
write 2 surprising things about yourself?
I don’t know, can’t really think of much. The first thing is I guess you can say my life. I was born in Pakistan, spent the first 10 years of my life in Hong Kong, my junior high years in the greater Houston (big Rockets fan), my high school years in Northern California, my first three years of college in Southern California and now back in the Houston area. The second thing is I am chilling in vicodin right now (maybe my answers wouldn’t surprise you, I hope they do though) and I really don’t want to write all this but I need the camp bad. Please vote 5 on this.
Speaking of the draft pick one bust in the top 8 and one gem from 9-15?
The top eight all look really nice, I am just hoping that it is not Maxwell (unless I can flip him for good value if he does). As far as gems go, I really like Brad Davis of the Clippers. He was number one on my list and went one pick before mine. I wrote my list in a hurry (draft was on pick 9 and something came up giving me 5 minutes to leave) and ended up getting the guy who was last on my list (a guy who shouldn’t have even been on my list after re-reading the entire thread on point guards as he does not have much value right now). Just hoping for some luck with him.
When you build a team is there a certain position that you like to build around? Why?
For the reasons concerning the ideal BBS team above, I would like to build this team around a PG. But I have seen great teams built around every position. A great championship caliber player is a great championship caliber player.
BBS gms have a weird shotblocking fetish. Is shotblocking overrated?
I always try to stack my teams with guys who block at a high rate (as well as guys who can get steals). The teams which rank high in both are easily among the best defensive teams in any league. If I can find an SF/SG/PG who does both, that is money (a big reason why I drafted Maxwell and had my eyes on him/Johnson/Cooper are because their notes said they could become guys who average 1 BPG and 1 SPG). Since blockers are not easy to come by, I do not feel that it is overrated at all. At the very least, they will have high value due to what they bring to the table. You could easily argue that blocks/steals are overrated in the NBA but I feel that it is the opposite in FBB.
Best 5 players in bbs?
IMO Bingo Smith, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julius Erving, Elvin Hayes and Elvin Hayes
Who will win the ROTY
Marques Johnson. He had a great TC and he just looks unreal for a rookie after that first sim. I really wanted him too.
Most valuable 5 players in BBS?
IMO Bingo Smith, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Derrek Dickey, Eric Money and Julius Erving
If you were Repole would you have traded Bingo in his prime?
He has nothing to prove. He has won championships here with three different cores. A three-peat is not an easy task to accomplish in any league (especially considering how random FBB could be) and he could have won more . He is a great GM, he enjoys making moves and he didn’t see any moves he could possibly make with the team so decided to make a new one. I probably wouldn’t have done it but sim leagues are something we do in our free time to have fun and sitting on a team is not really fun.
What is your favorite part of the season?
Strangely enough, training camp. Always cool to look at all the rosters and see who improved (or vice versa) and what they have become.
dumbest trade you have seen so far?
Going to abstain from this, not yet at the point where I can really call anyone out as I haven’t done much.
Top 3 teams in each conference?
East: Milwaukee, Charlotte and Chicago. West: Portland, Denver and the LA Lakers
