Let's go back a few seasons to when you were the gm of the Wolves. You seemed to be set up for years, why move to Boston? Any regrets about the move? The Wolves have done pretty well since you left, was the success bc or in spite of Game?
The decision to move to Boston was an interest thing. I'm accustomed to being Boston in leagues. Yes, the name matters that much to me. I kept this behind the scenes, but at the time of the switch I was actually considering leaving. I don't know what it was... just wasn't feeling GMing anymore. I figure Spence felt that offering me Boston would jump start my interest and I felt the same way so I agreed to the switch. Sure I left behind some nice pieces but I can honestly say that I WAS more interested after the switch. I wanted to take what was known as a meh franchise and make them good. Admittedly it hasn't worked out as well as I thought it would.
So no, no regrets as the switch is what kept me in this league. As far as the Wolves success, credit to Game. Say what you will about the team he got.. in the end he made the rapes for Earl Monroe and Bob McAdoo and KAJ.
What do you think about the team switching trend in general?
Even though I like GMs sticking with their team for historical reasons, I don't have a problem with it. Especially if it makes sense. A GM moving to claim their favorite basketball team for example. As long as a GM isn't going from a shit situation to a good one I'm completely fine with team switching.
You had a lot of hope for your three rookies last year, are you disappointed how they turned out? Which one will bust out in tc this year? Looking back who would you have picked at those draft slots?
I'm really only disappointed in Edwards. It seemed pretty clear that Parker and Buckner were only going to be supporting players. I felt that I had a chance at a big time scoring C with Edwards so I was pissed with the training camp he had. But that being said he can still be that guy. The flashes that he has shown throughout last year leads me to believe that his 85+ strength and inside is still there. So with that in mind, he would be my pick to bust out this training camp. I imagine he gets his B inside back, while improving both his defense and rebounding and getting that A scouted back.
Looking back on the draft now, I probably should have picked DJ only because he's extremely overrated right now and he would have got me something nice. As far as the Quinn pick I should have got Lucas, no question. Big fuck up by me there . No qualms about Sonny. He's great.
Compare Bernard King to 2 current or former bbs players as best/worst case scenarios?
I think King's best care scenario would be Chet Walker. I know people will think I'm overrating him but everything Spence has said about King points towards him being an extremely dominant scorer. With his high potential I'm sure the rebounding will come along. That being said I call anyone with high scoring and rebounding potential Chet Walker so *shrug*
His worst case scenario.. hmm. Can't think of any specific player at the moment but I think at worst he'll be a ~22 and 7 kind of guy with absolutely no stats D.
Besides King you had some later first rounders this year; pick one who will surprise us?
I think Kenny Carr can be good. He has over 85 inside and his notes point towards decent strength and jumpshot. He was also said to be a good rebounder and he has potential. I know people stayed away from him because of the TO problem he is supposed to have but since I picked 21st or something like that, I had nothing to lose.
You had a nice fa, are you going to try to compete this year?
As far as competing, for like the 4th time, NO. My team is absolutely garbage. Poor rebuild so far. I need to enter my CY IMO. It's the only way I can have a shot at building a team that is actually good vs building a team to just making my CY.
Fred Carter is a solid player with an ugly contract which will pay him millions until 37. What kind of value are you trying to get for him?
Ok, ok. I admit the tail end of Carter's deal isn't great but I felt like I had to force the issue and get something good in order to gear up for this CY I'm about to enter. I typically only rebuild for 2 years so this is new ground for me and perhaps I overreacted and gave Carter a longer deal than I should have. That being said Carter is quality. Guy gets you 20-25 PPG to go along with great stls/TOs. And to top things off I've only been asking guys for 2 1sts. He is certainly worth that.
What contract did you offer to Nate when he left? Do you feel that you have bad luck in fa? What were the best/worst contracts you ever gave ?
Tried to dig back and get the exact PM to get the percent increase that I offered because I don't remember. But basically I offered him a full 7 year max with a percentage lower than the full 12.5. The salary I offered was far more than what he signed for and we were coming off a very good season so do I feel I've had bad luck in FA? A little bit, sure. Especially when considering the loss of Tart and going even further back, Mitchell Jordan. I've been on the opposite end of spectrum as well though. I stole Monta Ellis from the Bulls along time ago and that basically set off the ensuing stretch of playoff makes.
Best contract I ever gave? This taking it back but what about Elton Brand? Going strictly off memory here but I think I signed him to some kind of 15 a year/4 year deal and he was great for me. Worst contract? Shieeeeeeet the way it's looking right now, it might be Fred Carter smh
Tell me what your thoughts about setting pace in BBS?
I will be 100% honest here and say that I have no fucking idea on what to think about the pace setting. I never pretended to be Broph or Pole in FBB matters so don't judge me, but yea. Sometimes I'll have a team that I feel should be running slow and yet it won't be until I switch to fast that the team suddenly starts reeling off win streaks. On the other side I've had classic outside shooting 1-2-3 + def/reb 4-5 teams that would perform far better at a slow pace than they did at a fast pace. It's because of this that I experiment so much during the regular season. If there is a concrete answer to how pace works, I haven't seen it with my own teams.
Predict one bust in the top 8 and one gem from 9-15?
I think everyone in the top 8 has a chance of being something but I'll pick Tyler Terry. I only pick him because I don't think he was made to be a star or anything. He'll probably hover around those ratings for his career
The Boom has to be Otis Birdsong. Skillz has already pumped him with RCs and ACs and with his inside and 3pt shot so high there is no doubt he will be good. Pole should have took him for DJ.
Who will be better English or Dantley?
It's a tough call right now. English blew up so much during that last training camp that it's hard to bet against him. I'm going to take the cop out route and say that they will both end up scoring/rebounding at the same rate in the future.
Stud pg or C?
Though I've won more with stud PGs, I still prefer a big time C to build around because they are more scarce. Not having to worry about post scoring, defense and rebounding when trying to assemble a championship team is huge.
3 most important attributes in a pg?
Handling, outside shooting, steals. I want my PG to steal the ball a lot while keeping the turnovers down. Also prefer outside shooting from my PGs
3 most important attributes in a C?
Strength, Rebounding, Shot Blocking. I'm always looking at defense first when I'm looking for bigs so rebounding and shot blocking are given. Strength affects multiple ratings so I like that over inside scoring.
pizza or hamburger?
Depends. We grillin'? Burgers all day. However Papa Ginos "The Works" pizza is divine
Most improved team this offseason besides the Bucks?
I've been sleeping a little bit so I apologize if this is far from the truth but I have to go with the Blazers. Signing Kermit Washington was huge whether they keep him or trade him. I like Broph's team a lot.
2 overrated players?
Dennis Johnson no doubt about it smh. Can't believe how much interest he was getting. After that I have no idea. Sorry.
Top 3 teams in each conference –
East - Bucks, Nets, Bulls
West - Lakers, Blazers, Wolves? Iunno. Kinda tough as Nuggets/Jazz/Spurs/Thunder all seem pretty good as well
2 underrated players?
Fred Carter and Jasper Wilson lol
How do the Grizz make their cy?
I'm not sure they can make it. The West has a lot of talent on deck and the Grizz don't have much value to give up in a potential trade. Pig might just have to rely on a little bit of luck and snag a lower seed. I hope he can make it
What did Dewayne do wrong last year?
Everyone else has said it. He waited too long to make moves. I hate that he got CY'd because I thought he was doing a pretty decent job.
What is your favorite part of the season?
When I'm winning? The playoffs of course. Otherwise, it's the off-season. Most things get done around then due to sky high activity
give yourself 1-10 ratings on the following: 1)draft 2) fa 3)dc 4)trading
Draft - 7/10. I think typically make good choices in the draft because I play it safe.
FA - 5/10. I've had my steals but ultimately I always end up signing guys that people either don't want or aren't willing to give up anything but garbage for. I also lose a lot of players.
DC - 2/10. Ya I'm very critical of my DC making in the playoffs. I really think it's the reason why I'm not sitting on 4-5 titles right now. I feel there were only like 2, maybe 3 title teams that were simply better. It could be a little bit of bad luck as well but who knows.
Trading - 8/10. It's my saving grace IMO. A big reason for why I put up nice #s with the Wolves. I'm always looking to make moves and I think I'm easy to deal with. Went with 8 instead of 9 because I made my worst move in BBS recently with the McAdoo trade. I think people let that slide because of my overall body of trades. I should have got killed for that.
Best 5 players in this version of BBS?
This is tough. So many great players. Not to mention my memory sucks. I'm sure I'll get killed on missing guys but the players that come to mind right now: Bingo, Gerald Wallace, Purnell Jackson, LeBron James, KAJ? Probably a shitty list, I know. I tried though.
I love Spencer bc…………….
He loves us. Corny but true.
