The Dime! W/ Greeme!
1. This has been one of the biggest trades in BBS history. What do you make of the dismantling of the Magic? Bingo and Willie to Milwaukee, and then Walton to Indy? Did Repole get raped?
No, great move by Repole. The sg rule is going to come into play this year so I'm not shocked at all to see Willie move. I think that it was a great strategy move by Repole. He had no upside to keeping Bingo bc even if he won another couple ships everybody would say that it was all because of Bingo. This way if AAR can't win a ship with Bingo it makes Repole look even better. Repole got a bunch of nice picks as well as Walton, dj and ford. Second trade was a no brainer imo. I like taking a risk on Cooper. He might bust but he might explode. It is a solid risk to take imo. Even if busts, Repole will have enough assets but if he explodes Repole is set for years. And what happens if Coop moves to sf and turns out to be Bingo2?? Don't bet against it. Not a fan of Mike Glenn but low tos and great scoring will always have value. His notes were just odd bc on the one hand he looked great from notes but on the other hand it projected as a backup 1/2.
2. You made a big trade today as well, trading Jon Mcglocklin. What was your thought proccess behind this deal? Did you get any other offers for Glock?
I gave up a ton for Glock – Mengelt and JVBK – but he did exactly what I wanted him to do and led us to 2 finals. Glock, when I got him, was by far the best pg in the league, at least in my eyes. Last year he dropped off some and Mengelt improved but I think that Glock/Mengelt/Bing were the top 3. I assume that Glock will continue to drop but should still be a top 5-7 pg this year. If I didn't get what I wanted I would have had no problem keeping Glock and trying to get back to the finals. I saw Jay as my most likely trade partner bc he is in his cy so he isn't looking at what people term "value" but rather at getting players who can help now even if loses "valuewise". I like phil but the truth is that this tc is critical for him. If either of his scoring ratings bumps up then he can be a valuable player. If not then maybe he will resign cheap and get acd. I love Dunn. I could be wrong but I think that he will be a Butch Beard type. I was tempted to draft Cooper just bc postionwise that would help me more but in the end I decided to draft who I thought will be the best player.
I didn't really look for offers on glock bc making a "value" trade made no sense to me; I would rather keep Glock and compete so only guys in their cys or guys who really needed a pg to compete even made sense to talk to. Once I see a fair trade I don't tend to continue to obsessively shop players – I especially hate to Biggie gms, i.e. you just delay and go back and forth telling gms what other gms offered. I know from discussions last year that Kobe loves Glock and thought maybe that I would wait until after fa to see if he resigns dantoni but once Jay met my price I didn't think it made sense to wait.
3. Give us a little more insight into your GM'ing style. You seem to get criticized a lot for the trades you make, yet the Nuggets seem to usually be relevant. What goes on in Greeme's head?
It is easy to make popular "value" trades but it is hard to make "talent" trades which look good. I want to win and I gather assets so I can overpay to get players that will help me do so.
Let's look at the Cliff Ray trade:
Milwaukee bucks trade:
Clifford Ray
Steve Green
Denver Nuggets trade:
Chris Ford
keith Erickson
Denver Nuggets 2046 first rounder
What did I give up? I first when I'm competing and Chris Ford. Chris Ford had "value" but there are really a lot of guys that look and play like Ford. Guys were turned off by Ray's contract but he looked like a monster rebounder that could play d. it was low risk anyway bc even if he didn't fit in he was only signed for 4 yrs. High reward, low risk deal.
Let's look at the Artis trade – (this actually wasn't bashed at the time though valuewise it wasn't good)
Trade 1:
Spurs get:
Campy Russell
Maurice Lucas
Walt Wesley
Nuggets get:
Artis Gilmore
Porter Meriweather
Tal Brody
Trade 2:
Spurs get:
Wizards 46 1st
76ers 47 1st
Bobcats 50 1st
Bobcats 51 1st
I needed a big to block shots and rebound. Artis is also surprisingly efficient for a center offensively. He was just what I needed. Did I overpay valuewise? Of course but I did so in order to get the player that I wanted. Mo lucas was in my mind an ok backup big, nothing more. Mle type maybe a little better. I liked Wesley but he was expendable with artis. The picks were late lottos at best though the Bobcats picks could have value if UK rebuilds. The main piece was Campy and with all due respect to Campy it is a lot easier to replace him than artis. What does campy do well? Volume scoring. Good, not great, %s. rebound well. Very good man to man defender. Poor stats defender. Ok tos. Getting a volume scorer is only good if he has better %s than the guys he is taking shots from. Maybe Campy will get there but it doesn't look like it at this point. Guys like Mengalt are great bc they shoot high %s and take a lot of shots. Guys like Campy – while the volume obviously improves their "value" – don't really help their teams win. Put it this way – Campy's efficiency if I had him would be worse than taylor's and far worse than Skeeter's so the more he shot the less they would. Put it another way – I doubt that putting Campy on my team instead of Mcmillian would change my record drastically but if I took off artis and put in say mo lucas it would change my record drastically.
4. You seem to value players differently than most, how do you value GM's? Who are the 5 worst and 5 best gm's in the league?
Gms are hard to value bc they really aren't playing the same game. There are gms who like to win ships and those that like to be as good as possible for as long as possible. So if I judge them based on my goals that will skew the rankings.
Based on my gut instinct of their understanding of how to build winning teams –
Top 5 (in no order) – AAR, Skillz, Repole, Play, Habes(he comes with the caveat of being very erratic and occasionally making trades bc he is worried about next year).
Bottom 5 (in no order) – Jay (good at collecting value but bad at finding the right trades to consolidate value and improve), Biggie (seems to have little clue about how to put together a team; he can put together guys that have value and even talent but not that function as a team), Kobe (same as Biggie), Outlawz (rumor has it that he was once a good gm but aside from the first year he came back and messed up his pick he hasn't done much. Maybe he didn't have a lot to work with. Now he has the #1 pick – put up or shut up time), Hype (on this list mostly bc he is not agreeing to accept my trade offer).
5. You seem to have constant back and forth with Play and Martinez. Use this time to call out a GM not named Play or Marty.
AAR – A really good gm who hasn't been in the hunt for awhile. He is now on the hot seat having acquired Bingo who some gms regard as an automatic ship. Not really calling him out for anything just noting that with the Bingo trade he has put himself on the hot seat and pretty much has to have success this year or he will get bashed.
6. Who is the most valuable player on your team and why?
It was glock now I don't really have one. We are a very solid team and can compete even if one of our starters goes down. If one of our bigs goes down then jimbo will step in. We have Phil smith and TR dunn and gar heard as backup wings. The hardest guy to replace would be Taylor just bc I haven't gotten another pg yet. Skeeter is also hard to replace bc we are going to look to him for 25+ this year. I don't really think one guy stands out as the most valuable though.
7. As the most recent finalist, which Western Conference GM do you think will be your biggest competition for the next 5 seasons?
I think the Warriors and the Wolves are the favorites this year, at least based on current rosters. Warriors are probably better and if they didn't move Cowens they would be the clear favorites. Kind of beyond my understanding why they moved Cowens if they were going to make a big move to get Bing. Game has done a good job putting together a solid team. Kaj and Monroe are superstars. Mcadoo looks good and has a ton of "value" but gets abused on the defensive end by a lot of average sfs.
8. Who will be the three best players in this draft? Which top 15 players do you see busting?
1. Jack Sikma has the potential to be a superstar but outside shooting bigs seem not to develop well. I would move him His post d seems to be very good at the moment so maybe move him to sf for tcs. In any case he should be one of the top 3. 2) Michael Cooper – I'm thinking that he could turn into a poor man's Bingo. On the other hand I am really not sure of anything in this draft. 3) TR Dunn – pretty much gets a slot because I drafted him. Gonna be Butch Beard.
Busts – Marques Johnson, Ced Maxwell, Terry Tyler. Pretty sure that either Marques or Ced will bust but I’m not sure which one. Tyler was a reach imo. I would rather have Wayne cooper tbh. Maybe even Landsberger or Benson.
9. Do you think you are the most underrated GM in the league. If not, who is? Who is the most overrated?
I don't really know what people think of me so it is kind of hard to know if I am overrated or underrated.
Underrated - Jah. It took me a few years to realize that Jah and dj were not the same guy and I still blame him for not drafting me Bernie Fryer but I think he puts together solid teams. He gets bashed for not making moves and then when he finally takes a risk and trades for Snyder then Snyder gets hurt. Kinda funny. Of course Jah still managed to beat the Thunder and pose a minor challenge for the Nuggets. And he gets points for not whining on the boards about injuries.
Overrated – Marty. Beyond the fact that I dislike his board persona (although I assume that he isn't like that in real life) he has been pretty bad. The only stretch I remember him being good was when he drafted Hollis and then flipped him for Baylor after a few years. He isn't a horrible gm, about average I guess but really no better than that.
10. What does Greeme do on an average Friday or Saturday night?
Greeme goes to Synagogue, eats dinner and goes to sleep on Fri nights. I only sleep about 5-6 hours at nights during the week so I try to catch up Fri night and sat. Pretty wild stuff. Sat night I will usually try to go out with my wife, usually a movie or a restaurant. Obviously, on Sat night, I also have this compulsive need to check what happened on BBS in the previous 25 hours on my phone, which drives my wife crazy.
