1) Do you consider yourself a top-15 GM?
I consider myself a realist. My tenure is marked by squandered potential, shopping assets after devaluation, reluctance to pursue big trades only to settle for mediocre ones, and a general rejection of any notion of success. There is no way I could call myself top-15.
There is way to much reluctance to make a change with my team. I get so scared to make a bad trade, I make a bad trade and devalue my assets. It's maddening. Doesn't make any sense either. You're supposed to take risks.
I consider myself the worst GM in the league. If I can't be mentioned in the same breath as the best, then I'm practically last. I've never been a great GM.
2) Do you actually think Tom Boswell is a top-20 value player in BBS?
Kim Kardashian's sex tape. Gorgeous exterior, but that's your move? Just lie there? And we all know when you give it up. Some say a little too much. Boswell is a bit last season, his flaws have shined through. Very quickly in his post-Disney stage.
3) Why is Phil Smith putting up mediocre ratings with such good numbers?
Phi Smith's numbers are the gods playing the lottery. Sadly, this is only my imagination.
Phil is one of my many "Pretty Little Pennies". Great ratings. Just beautiful. You love looking at them. But they aren't really worth much. Just a shiny 1 cent piece. George McGinnis and Tom Boswell fall into this category as well. These aren't bad players, but they aren't throwing it back at you.
Smith was pretty impressive when running our inside offense.
4) Who is the most valuable player in the Central division?
Dickey. He's good and play has him.
5) Who are the top-3 point guards in the league?
Don't have a clue. I know Bingo Smith is really good, that's about it. If I can't acquire you in a trade or recently pursue you in free agency, I'm largely unaware of your existence. I only pay attention to who is on my team, how they perform, and how they do against the better players in the league. But after making that comparison, most are forgotten. For these best lists I usually just glance at stats and that's just as lazy.
6) In the Plenty in 20 piece with Blue, he says that Alex English will win ROY. Do you agree or is he just trying to be humble?
Whoa, 29.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.5 spg? I know he had a great TC but man this is amazing. Micheal Ray has the advantage of the PG going for him, so he has a case. Doesn't matter though, English is the real Rookie Of The Year. I'd even trade Fatty Taylor for him.
7) What do you think is your team's greatest position of need?
Every single position is a position of need for this team. Point guard mostly. Fatty Taylor's turnovers on a team with a bunch of guys who turn it over just can't work. And it won't. He'd be a nice backup SG, except that's not a position of need here. We'll have Dave Bing next year so it's not a big deal.
8) Why haven't you given Junior Bridgeman minutes? It seems like he's really progressed.
The Torreto method. No reason to use the NOS this early. Be patient, wait for the right moment to attack. This quarter mile journey is the same for all participants, but the finish line only accepts one companion. Marvel at the beautiful machine in the back that you know could lead the race at any time. Don't worry, it's just started.
9) Do you want to see roundtable articles return to BBS?
I honestly don't give a shit. I thought my idea was alright, but it wasn't really met with a warm reception. I can just sit back and benefit off of these type of articles though. 20 Shots birthed your style son! It takes about 15 minutes to write the questions and I get a +5. Even with those horseshit responses from Habes. If roundtables have the added benefit for giving me more RCs? I'll abuse the hell out of it.
10) What has been the most significant trade this season?
I haven't paid any attention to trades. Philadelphia made a trade. He's in his contract year. That's the most important.
11) Do you think that any team could make a good enough offer to land Bingo Smith?
Which ever team lands Larry Bird or Magic Johnson. That's it.
#BustBird
12) Who is the biggest bust that you've drafted with a top-5 pick?
Bingo Smith is not Norm Van Lier. The inverse is also true. Serviceable he may be, not a franchise changer. In the nature of the question, I can't remember anyone I've taking with a top-5 pick just absolutely busting. Pistol was a disappointment until he got onto another team (as is the case with most of my players). Mostly this is just a case of me tanking improperly and living in the deadzone for so long picking around picks 7-13 every year.
That's a bad idea.
Boswell disappointed me. I was expecting an improvement this season. He apparently was not.
13) What do you hope to improve with your sortable stats module?
I'll make a list. This things have a use.
-AJAX calls instead of 3 different tables (the 2 unselected tables are hidden) so that searches can maintain throughout each.
-Filters to make it easier to read. Because no one gives a shit about the guy who played 1 minutes this season. Something like this www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/psl_finder.cgi
-Better styling.
-PLAYER COMPARISON TOOL (I have no idea if this is possible)
-Team stats (This is pretty easy actually)
-ORTG and PER (This formulas make me go )
-Convince Spencer to upload the CSV to a db every sim so that stats are instant
14) Do you think that you deserve a bonus RC per year for creating the sortable stats module?
That'd be cool, but it isn't necessary. I usually post an article with some information when I add a feature so it works out for me.
15) Better commish: WillC or Spencer?
Spencer. He put up with me being an immature jackass in the original BBS (Word to lumley!) with the Suns to now me being a more mature, much more calculated jackass now. He's kept BBS running at a breakneck speed for longer than I'd say any other FBB league around? That's impressive.
WillC does not like me. He seemed to have a problem with anyone who disagreed with him. He came off as a bit of a pompous dick (being British) on top of actually being something of a pompous dick. His life seemed cool, he was a really good commish, but just didn't really enjoy him. I'm mostly impressed with the precision of the vision from his nose.
16) Who is the best GM that you've seen in any league?
I don't really believe there is a best GM. I can't remember anyone off the top of my head that I remember thinking they were clearly superior. It seems that FBB is so well understood at this point that there isn't much of a way to get the drop on folks. There are guys who get others to make bad trades, guys who draft well, guys who do the tank/youth/flip well, guys who trade until it works, and guys who somehow always end up with a steal. There are guys whose opinions I trust (Aar, Play, Repole, Skillz, Broph). There was some talented guys in RetroABCA, but I worry about insider info being shared between the top GMs in that league. Outlawz used to dominate, right?
17) Which point guard will be the first one taken in this year's draft?
Though I'm not in love with him, you'd have to think it's Norm Nixon. He has the A potential and has notes that explicitly say he's the best PG in this draft. He worries me a bit with notes that say he's just a solid man-to-man defender and isn't a steals guy, where is that B+ coming from on defense? I'm not fully convinced that if you take the 2nd PG in this draft and put points into the right area, you can't come out with a guy just as good or better than Norm. I really like Eddie Jordan and hope that handling issue isn't severe.
18) If you could have any player on the Rockets besides Dr. J., who would it be?
Easy question, Caldwell Jones. He's an elite level shot blocker while grabbing a steal a game. You might look at the 40.4 FG% and shy away, but he actually has a 51.4 TS% because he is so good from the FT line. He also leads the team in FTA per game with 4.6. If you have a big who can consistently knock down free throws, you have a player. His rebounds may be inflated by how poor Houston is on the boards, but you can surround him with the right front court player if that is an issue. It's too bad Houston hasn't been able to.
19) Will the Knicks win 42?
I hope so. When you have Don Buse on your team, victory is the only option. Don Buse is the pinnacle of PG. It helps that he has the right mindset to win without his pick. It's always more fun to do so. Though I'd enjoy Play beating him on Day 120 in an overtime game just as much.
20) Who will have a better career Michael Ray Richardson or Tree Rollins?
If a tree falls into Broph's lap, you will hear about it. I'm still on the fence about Tree. He's a good player. Great stats in the limited minutes he seems to play. Always brings it on defense. Is he going to be a Gene Moore with less rebounding type? Per 36 he's already putting up those kind of numbers.
MRR looks like he could possibly get (if everything does right) A- A- A A C+ ratings. That'd be ridiculous. His handling and shooting looks to need some AC love though, and I'm not sure Blue is going to take full advantage of it while that potential is still high.
I'll say MRR if he gets some AC love before TC.
