Turns out we were right to view this as a top 5 then everybody else draft. After five the draft took a huge hit, before it picked back up again at 12 or so through 20
1 Portland Trail Blazers -
Moses Malone C 18 6'10'' 260 A- C D C A- A
Moses Malone C 21 6'10'' 260 A- C C- C+ A A
Now with Dallas, Moses was the once in a decade cant miss stud, the guy everybody wanted, he could score, rebound, and at just 18 with great potential, he was going to be a beast…. All he had to do was work that defense up to a respectable level and it was over, the guy was called the most valuable player not long after his entry to the league, he improved in his first TC< put up 22 points 11 rebounds a game, and with having 1.2 bloc,ks, he wasn’t lost there…Since then though, the unthinkable happened…he hasn’t improved, after one TC, his ratings looked exactly as they are now, except for his having D+ handles then instead of the C- he carries now. Just a mega disappointment. In spite of all that, he still appears to be a nice offensive big, he has a solid jump shot, is an excellent rebounder, and well yeah. He does appear to be a bit of a foul whore though, fouling out thirteen times last year, but, regardless you have to think he will get a max this offseason.
2 Oklahoma City Thunder -
Maurice Lucas C 21 6'9'' 215 B- C D+ B B A
Maurice Lucas C 24 6'9'' 215 B C C- A- A- C
Lucas was a bust right up until this last TC, where he finally did something for the Spurs, going up inside and rebounding, at least putting up an effort to make himself look useful, gotta be the fact that he is in a contract year. He isn’t going to wow you at all, his offensive game is pretty mediocre, he shoots threes too much (3-38 in his career) and his jump shot leaves something to be desired. He steals pretty well for a big, but also turns it over more than you would like, and doesn’t block that great. He is a small net positive though, +.7 steals+blocks vs. turnovers. What he does offer is nice rebounding, he isn’t a bad player in that regard, as recently rebounding has begun to taper off. Not a max guy, but could be a nice role player. Definitely needs articles. Horrid pick though in the long run considering the next two guys, but, not necessarily one I can blame Habes for making.
3 Charlotte Bobcats -
Larry Kenon SF 6'9'' 205 20 B+ C C- B B- A
Larry Kenon SF 23 6'9'' 205 A- B- C- A B B
Traded to the Lakers in the Walt Frazier trade, Kenon is one of the next two players who look virtually identical, with Kenon being the more efficient player, but McGinnis having the better ratings. Actually, you wonder what McGinnis would look like at his natural position of PF, but anyway, at least for now, Kenon looks to have been the right pick, he doesn’t block or steal a ton, but he rebounds well, and is very very efficient on offense, 51.6/82.4/41.2 is great for an A- B- scorer. He doesn’t jack up the threes, but he makes the ones he takes. Still a net negative on steals and blocks vs. turnovers, but I gotta think he is at least a pretty good positional defender, and his rebounding is a big plus. Definitely a nice SF type, well done by Spencer.
4 Los Angeles Clippers -
George McGinnis PF 6'8'' 235 23 B+ C+ C C+ B A
George McGinnis SF 26 6'8'' 235 A- B C A B B
McGinnis had a huge flaw coming into the league, that being his handles, but they never have been that big of an issue, yeah, at 2.3 its now what you like outta a SF, but, given that he does 2 blocks and steals a game on his career (last year did 2.4 right now doing 2.0), his net is only .2 blocks and steals worse than Kenons. He is over his career a better rebounder than Kenon, but, he is nowhere near as efficient offensively, being a career 44.4% shooter from the field. Prior to this most recent sim (since J’s stats thing always seems to be one sim behind), he carried a TS% 5 points worse than Kenon. Still, McGinnis is a nice player.
5 New Jersey Nets -
Kermit Washington PF 6'8'' 230 22 B C- C- A- B A
Kermit Washington C 25 6'8'' 230 A- C- C A+ A- B
The only player still with the team that drafted him in the top 5, you could argue that Kermit the best player in this draft out of the first round. Unlike Moses, Kermit does most of his work on the defensive end, combining that A+ defensive rating with 2.3 blocks and 1.2 steals, very nice for a big. He has had pretty similar ratings to what he has now since his 2nd or so TC, but, with the freebie he finally pushed up over that A- rebounding threshold, which makes his ratings far far sexier. He is pretty solid offensively, though you could argue he would have been better with the Freebie to his offense or blocking (for 3+ a game), but, the increase in ratings certainly makes him look better. Gonna get a max this year no doubt. He didn’t quite live up to the promise he had after one or two TCs, but then again that seemed obvious with his notes specifically mentioning he didn’t have amazing upside. Just a role player, he still looks to have developed better than I would think Spencer planned though.
6 Milwaukee Bucks -
Mike Green C 6'10'' 200 22 B- C C- B- C+ A
Mike Green PF 25 6'10'' 200 B+ C C- B B C
Fucking Bullshit idiot who picked this guy should be fired, what a horrific player, huge mistake, and all around disgusting…then you realize the guys picked behind him. Its not like he is any good, but, is doing 10/6.3/1.5 in 27 minutes at SF, at least he has a use. He offers a +1.2 steals plus blocks, and while he is still a terrible offensive player, he does have decent ratings, going +5 since entering the league, all in D rebounding or inside. Being a dunk contest champ though pretty much says all you need to know. He is a shittier Darnell Hillman.
7 Miami Heat*** (Dropped 3 but not autoed)-
Doug Collins SG 6'6'' 180 22 B- B+ C+ C D+ A
Doug Collins SG 25 6'6'' 180 B- A- B- C D B
To be fair, this guy needs to be viewed more as the 10th pick, since the Heat were dropped three spots. This was an awful draft to have a 6-10 pick though, all these guys suck (so does 11 but it doesn’t seem like he shoulda gone there). Collins is worthless, plain and simple, he offers some scoring sure, but so do a ton of wings, and with his horrific D and rebounding, well, no thanks, Ill pass. Looks decent enough, but really not worth the pick. Only gone +1 since he was picked as well, ouch. He is still with the Heat as of now.
8 Philadelphia 76ers -
Swen Nater C 6'11'' 240 23 B C D B+ B+ B
Swen Nater C 26 6'11'' 240 B- C C- A- A- B
The guy I thought I shoulda taken instead of Green, and boy, was I wrong, Nater is beyond horrible. He does have some value, as a tanking teams best friend, nice enough ratings, but the man must have hands of stone, cause he is a turnover whore of the highest degree. He has no offense to speak of, doesn’t block shots, and right now, per 36, would be doing 10.8 points 13 rebounds (so his clear strength) 1 steal, .6 blocks and 2.6 turnovers, yeesh. He shoots 37.6% from the field too, its sad really, cause it seems like the guy coulda been a decent player, but his turnovers kill that. He may well be helping the current 76ers GM get CY’d, but hey, at east he has gone +3.
9 Cleveland Cavaliers -
Dwight Jones C 6'10'' 210 21 B- C D+ C+ B- A
Dwight Jones C 24 6'10'' 210 A- C C- B B+ B
Jones looks great, I even think his D goes up a point or two at SF, but, he is beyond mediocre. 9 points 8 boards in 24.4 minutes for the Cavs right now, but, he is shooting 35.7% from the field and 68.5% from the line, with 1.8 turnovers in that time. Cant argue that his ratings look nice, but as a player, disgusting…He has stayed with the Cavs, probably not all that surprising considering his production.
10 Denver Nuggets -
John Williamson SG 6'2'' 185 21 B- B+ C C C- A
John Williamson SG 24 6'2'' 185 B- A- C- C D+ C
Sad that I was considering this guy at 6 too, and he is completely worthless as well. ) He can score a bit, but, a lot of wings can, and he really doesn’t bring anything else to the plate. Terrible defense, and bleghh rebounding make for him being worthless. In a league where Gail Goodrich is worth 1 first, its obvious Williamson is worth nothing. Washington.
11 New York Knicks -
Mike Bantom PF 6'9'' 200 21 B- C+ D+ B- C+ B
Mike Bantom PF 24 6'9'' 200 B- C+ C- B- B- C
Bantom sucks. This is the worst kind of draft really for these, typically I try to do decent sized writeups on the lotto players, then, a writeup on any decent players after that…shit players are horrible to do, and of course the back half of this lotto is filled with them, then, from 13-18 you run into a bunch of nice players. I recall him looking at least decent after one TC, but shit now he just looks worthless. You always want your players to have at least one thing that makes them useful off the bench, but Bantom has nothing, he isn’t good at anything. Awful pick in the end, but, being Skillz he got rid of him quick to New Orleans, only for him to come back this year.
12 New Orleans Hornets -
Mike D'Antoni PG 6'3'' 185 22 C+ C B A C- B
Mike D'Antoni PG 25 6'3'' 185 C+ B+ A- A C- B
D’Antoni it turns out shoulda gone 6, like in the mock aar made that had me taking him there (which I said hell no too). He isn’t a stud, but he is a very nice all around PG, he isn’t a turnover whore, steals, can shoot the three (though you would like to see more out of his jump shot), anid he rebounds decently enough. Not an elite player, and tough to gauge his value considering he is going to have to get an offer of some sort in FA, the kinda guy that if you are the Hornets, you REALLY want to see resign. If he tests FA it might be tough to keep him around
13 Utah Jazz -
Allan Bristow SG 6'7'' 210 22 C+ A C- C C B
Allan Bristow SG 25 6'7'' 210 C+ A+ C C+ C+ C
Jah stays alive because he always seems to make good draft picks, and this is no exception. While Bristow isn’t going to blow you away, he is an excellent shooter, and his C+ rebounding is pretty nice. He is currently averaging 20.7 points but weirdly only 5.4 boards, which you would think would be higher with that C+ at SG, but I dunno. His percentages are ridiculous, 47.3/91.2/49.7, awesome, making him an efficient scorer His TS% is sub 60% though, lower than you would think with those, but its because he doesn’t get to the line much I guess.
14 Chicago Bulls - FORFEIT (HC PENALTY)
Woulda probably been a good pick, considering Play woulda probably taken Caldwell Jones.
15 New Orleans Hornets -
Leonard Gray PF 6'8'' 240 21 A- C C- C C B
Leonard Gray C 24 6'8'' 240 A- C- D+ C+ C C
Gray can score, outside that, he makes for a perfect tanking player, he doenst defend or rebound, and while he does score inside well, he doesn’t have a great jump shot to go with that, hindering his offensive upside and preventing him from being a Willie Norwood (who really has gone downhill lately)
16 Houston Rockets -
Jim Chones C 6'11'' 220 23 B C- D+ C A- B
Jim Chones C 26 6'11'' 220 B C D+ C+ A D
Great rebounder, and he doesn’t turn it over, which means he will always find a place in the league as a backup. He scored pretty well last year as well, but is shootiing more this year, not what you want really. He is a nice player though, definite guy I could see getting the MLE.
17 Houston Rockets -
Caldwell Jones C 6'11'' 217 23 C+ C C- A- B- B
Caldwell Jones C 26 6'11'' 217 B- C C- A+ B C
Caldwell is a sick defender, doing 3.6 blocks 1.1 steals a a starter. He doesn’t turn it over much, and while he isn’t a great rebounder, he still does a ton of blocks and steals. Great pick by Houston, but it will be interesting to see what he gets in FA. He and Chones make a great pair, since Chones covers Jones rebounding deficiencies and Jones covers Chones D. Obviously neither are very good on offense, but Jones has a nice FT shot so there is that. Both are still in Houston.
18 Charlotte Bobcats -
Nick Weatherspoon SF 6'7'' 195 23 B C C- A- B- B
Nick Weatherspoon SF 26 6'7'' 195 B- C+ C- A C+ C
The man who Charlotte chose to keep over Campy Russell (I think), ouch…He isn’t very good, he doesn’t block or steal, hes gone down hill since entering the league, trading inside for out, and rebounding for D, not much to say other than meh. Sitting on the bench in Denver
19 New York Knicks -
Harvey Catchings C 6'9'' 218 22 C C- C- A- C+ B
Harvey Catchings C 25 6'9'' 218 C C- D+ A- B- C
Seems like this guy could be at least a decent third string big, but he isn’t getting any burn this year. He can block shots a bit, and I recall he had nice post D, his rebounding isn’t great, but its not Julius Keye bad. Not a star, but a nice leftover FA or 4+5 pickup. Heat arent playing him.
20 Boston Celtics -
George Karl PG 6'2'' 185 22 C+ B C+ C+ D+ B
George Karl PG 25 6'2'' 185 B- B+ B B D D
A pretty nice pick really, but he has turnover issues which limit his upside a bit. He makes for a decent backup though. And was the primary backup on a 68 win team last year…and is still the primary backup for the Bobcats.
21 Oklahoma City Thunder *** -
Kevin Kunnert C 7'0'' 230 21 C+ C C- B+ B B
Kevin Kunnert PF 24 7'0'' 230 C+ C D+ A- B- C
Meh, swapping rebounding for D isn’t a bad thing with those ratings, but really I think he woulda been better if he had gone the other way. He does look like maybe he can block shots at a decent clip, but it seems like his current 1.4 in 11.6 minutes a game is just an anomaly, since he hasn’t done that kinda shot blocking at all prior, but,his second year .6 in 8 minutes would be about 2.5 so maybe he does? Plays for Denver.
22 New York Knicks -
Louie Nelson SG 6'3'' 190 22 B B C- C+ C- B
Louie Nelson SG 25 6'3'' 190 B A- C- C+ C- C
Another scorer ratings type with no value cause there are ton of them, 32 to be precise with at least B inside A- outside and C+ defense. Does seem like somebody should give him more than 5.2 minutes a game just to make sure he cant do something, but oh well. Plays for the Thunder
23 Milwaukee Bucks -
Larry McNeill C 6'9'' 195 22 B C C- B C+ B
Larry McNeill PF 25 6'9'' 195 B+ C D+ B- C+ B
Best served at SF, where he is a nice player, but the -3 TC this last offseason hurt, no doubt. Did 50+% shooting last year, making me think of him as a lot like Willie Norwood with a better jump shot, but not as strong. Not gonna be an elite player, but he may fit himself in as a SF on an inside focus team. Does have a career high of 48 points though. Id still like to get him back, but nobody is going to pay much for him, looked a ton better with the A- C D+ B B- ratings he had last year. Was traded to the Knicks, back with the Bucks now.
24 Charlotte Bobcats -
Kevin Stacom SG 6'3'' 185 22 C+ A- C+ C+ C B
Kevin Stacom SG 25 6'3'' 185 C A- B C+ C C
Dudes worthless, unless his stats he put up in 4 games at 7.3 minutes a game in those four are real, in which case he is a 27.5+ PPG scorer on amazing percentages. Yay for small sample sizes. Sucks in all likelihood, cant find a spot in the rotatiojn on the Wizards.
25 Charlotte Bobcats -
Ernie DiGregorio PG 6'0'' 180 22 C B A- C+ D+ B
Ernie DiGregorio PG 25 6'0'' 180 C B A- C+ D C
Stuck behind John Lucas in Philly, but it doesn’t matter since he isn’t very good, did about 4 turnovers a game per 36 in his rookie season, and about the same last season. Not really worth a damn
26 Philadelphia 76ers -
Johnny Neumann SG 6'6'' 200 22 B- B C B- C B
Johnny Neumann SG 25 6'6'' 200 C+ B C B C- C
Sucks ass, also plays for the Nuggets along with Kunnert, and Weatherspoon.
27 Boston Celtics - FORFEIT
Coulda had Dickey
28 New Jersey Nets -
Mel Davis SF 6'6'' 220 22 C C- C- B+ A- B
Mel Davis C 25 6'6'' 220 C C D+ A- A C
Mel is a nice player, he doesn’t do anything for stats D, but, he is an A rebounder who can play Positional D and isn’t a turnover whore, a nice glue backup for a team that needs more rebounding, or, for a greedy team who just wants to hoard rebounding.
29 Toronto Raptors* -
Ed Ratleff SF 6'6'' 195 23 C+ B C B C B
Ed Ratleff SG 6'6'' 195 26 C+ B+ C C+ C C FA
The fact that he is currently still in FA says it all
2nd Round steal:
11 Chicago Bulls -
Derrek Dickey PF 6'7'' 218 22 C+ C C- B B- C
Derrek Dickey PF 25 6'7'' 218 B C C- A- A- A
Best pick in this entire draft, Dickey has a great jump shot, can sccore inside, doesn’t turn it over, but most importantly, the man dooes 1.9 steals and 3.8 blocks a game at PF, crazy good for a PF, he can get you about 10-11 boards a game too. And for Play, best of all, locked up for 7 years. He isn’t being leaned on for offense, but, he is a career 16.5 ppg scorer, and has a 49 point game.
1st Round
1 Portland Trail Blazers -
Moses Malone C 18 6'10'' 260 A- C D C A- A
