In this version of the VIP room, we have the fairly recently returning (I guess it depends on your definition of fairly recently) Jay. The current GM of the Hawks sits down and well, let's just get to it!
1. The team is currently at 6-13. What's the plan? Not just this year but for the foreseeable future.
I was going to try to get a low playoff seed this year but I missed one guy on my IR, got auto'd, then went 0-6 with the worst piece of shit lineup I have ever seen FBB trot out. Only 8-10 since anyway, plus my original DC was pretty bad. Doesn't make much sense for me to try to win but I'm not really interested what looks to be these weaker at the top, depth filled drafts that don't involve an Erving or Larry. I already have a team filled with decent. I probably will for the next 5 years. Unless I don't make my CY.
As for the plan this year? Don't know. Tanking is boring. But this team is without a #1. Most likely move the pick. Tank or something.
2. George McGinnis wants the max. You accept? and what kind of trade would allow you to move said player.
Without a question. He's capable of playing 2-3 positions, he's been efficient offensively since I've had him, plays good defense and is a good enough rebounder for his position. Turnovers be damned. I think individual turnovers are a bit overrated anyway. Obviously going to have problems with him, Boswell, and Owens occupying the same front court (turnovers and no blocks), but they have value and should be easy enough to move.
George McGinnis also has pretty ratings going for him. And that can carry a guy. Not Pistol though, but a guy.
As far as what I'd move him for, any deal that makes sense. Probably for a PF so I can move Owens to SF (better contract more than likely).
3. Why do you value Boswell as high as you do?
Because he had over 85 inside and jumpshot as a rookie, then got some RC/AC love from me. Even a guy like Phil who I poured my points into got a bit of a boost from some attention, and he didn't have the initial TC of Boswell.
A lot of my love had to do with him managing his turnovers better last season (went up when I intentionally played him in bad positions). I'm hoping that he cuts it under 2 at some point. He's already a hack, doesn't need to be a turnover prone one too.
Also, you wouldn't know his name otherwise. Value is getting more than a couple of people to believe something. I'm trying to make you believe he's greatness. Of course he's an outside Center too, so....
4. You've had 4 winning seasons and 4 losing seasons. Do you believe you've done a good job and why?
Winning isn't that hard. Winning being making the playoffs. Being successful is another beast. I'm still a little perturbed that my last good team fell victim to the injury bug the entire season and the first round of the playoffs. I don't think Pistol was a true #1, but we certainly weren't going to win a series without him. It was a stats defense, point differential machine. All that stuff I don't really like.
Of course my biggest failures have been failure to capitalize on opportunities of greatness. After getting criticized for the Wilt deal (which never made sense to me), it landed me the pick that could have been Bingo Smith. That would have been Bingo Smith. I had him in another sim league and he was probably my favorite player I've ever had other than Yu Chen in NBN. Even said I'd take him #1 in the notes thread no question. But come round the draft, of course Norm Van Lier is the selection. Why take the high scoring wing you could pair with DVA rather than the PG. Risky right? Or dumb.
That Earl Monroe for Mel Daniels trade makes me sad. Only because Mel is winning championships in Orlando even after dying here.
I haven't done a good job, but I have overachieved at times with teams that weren't appreciated by the league. Other than total domination, that's the most fun I can have with this game.
5. Why is Fatty still on your team?
He's cheap, put up some good stats when given the time, and expiring and the 20th pick in the draft really don't do shit for me. I tried that and got nothing. There are ways to lose with him. I'd put him into a deal but others not valuing him much won't make me throw him away. If someone wants to contend Fatty is winning me games, I'd like to see their offer.
6. What would be your perfect team?
A team that held it's opponents under 90ppg and scored over 110ppg. Complete defensive domination.
7. What made you come back to sims?
Repole. I'd posted on the boards sparingly and flirted with the idea, but when I moved in with Repole it decided to finally get in the league. Or at least I finally was given a team. Mentioned interest and got looked over a couple of times.
8. What exactly is the deal with you and repole?
I've been in leagues with him since at least 2004 and we would occassionally talk on Facebook about basketball, FBB, and whatever.
He moved to my state for college and after I graduated I ended up getting my first "real" job in the same city. Took a shot in the dark and asked if I could stay there for a week while I try to look for a place in town instead of commuting/moving back home (moved out of college apt on friday, job started on mon. successfully avoided moving home ). 5 days somehow turned into a week as his roommates tolerated me for some unknown reason. Got a place at the last minute in a location I liked. It became my 2nd/weekend home after that. A 6th year of college even. Good times.
9. Which GM's would you like to stab with a rusty fork?
Only Habes and Marty bother me at times. Stab them? It's not that serious. They're good GMs. If I'm really getting bothered I use that as a reminder that I'm probably spending too much time on the league.
Spyro amuses me. Forks are for eating.
10. What made you do the whole "advanced stats" thing for the league and why should we follow it? I mean, the human tank machine has a TS 73.7 for fucks sake! Seriously though, why?
The TS% of a guy who plays under 10mpg probably doesn't mean much, now does it? Unless it's Junior Bridgeman then it is an indicator of future success.
But I like finding under the radar guys and the per-36 minutes stats are a quick way for me to do that. Also to get a players value quicker when I get a PM and compare him without having to switch through windows.
This also serves as a playground for me to explore technologies I'm aware of but haven't used. I hadn't really used DataTables before, nor written enough AJAX calls to the point that I'm comfortable doing it off the top of my head. I plan on making this site pretty intuitive. It may not be widely used, but it's been a big learning experience for me.
11. Your 22 in the latest GM rankings. Fair or foul and why?
Completely fair. No reasonable person would say I've done a good job. I've consistently gotten young talent and it either developed after I let it go (Marin, Monroe), didn't move it quick enough (Van Lier, Pistol), or just made the wrong moves. Skillz says I'm scared to make a trade. I don't want to make a bad trade.
Biggest thing is I should propose deals to GMs more often. I'll get a GM who offers me nothing for a player (Pistol) for years then claim his value was so much higher than what I move him for. When I propose deals, and actually follow through, tends not to happen.
12. BBS champs will be...
Orlando. He's lost 1 game and I'm not betting against that formula until it stops working.
13. BBS or NBN?
NBN and it's not even close. Constantine Kolokotronis and Tyrone Johnson. Yu Chen and that SG guy. Loved that league, my favorite sim I've ever been in. BBS is a well run league, but the game FBB has been well worn out by now. NBN was just a time of more youthful exuberance, and more international flare.
14. Who's this AC going towards and where?
I honestly have no idea. I'll let you in to my thought process here.
-Boswell's handling or strength. More concerned that he's a foul hound.
-McGinnis' offense. Has an AC left so a +10 in the right place could turn this guy around.
-Fatty Taylor. Troll.
-Phil Smith's 3PT shot. He doesn't have one. Need very solid to be good.
-Junior Bridgeman. Love his game, not his potential. 3 ACs and this PP could make him into more of an offensive threat than he should've ever been.
-Someone. Because I'm making this too complicated.
15. Tell me something about your favorite basketball team. Why are they shitty?
Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva and 94 million.
Detroit is my favorite by location. I'm much more of a fan of players than teams. Makes more sense to me. I'm not going to try to justify those signings just because I'm a fan.
KG is my favorite player if anyone cares. Probably LeBron after that. If only because I defend him so much and the backlash against him represents almost everything I hate about the modern sports fan.
Thank you Jay. As always, let's take the time out to enjoy our sponsors wonderful product. I enjoy cinnamon. You enjoy it. Buy it!
