Articles are at an all-time high, there was a post pad and there was a TC. Which players around the league have benefited the most?
Let's rank the top-10 most improved:
1)
Alex English SG 22 6'7'' 190 A- B- C C C A
Alex English SG 22 6'7'' 190 A- B+ C C+ C+ A
+4
Alex English became a bonafide stud in one TC.
Leading up to the draft, he looked like a one-trick pony offensive player who would lack the ability to do much else.
Now he's already transformed into a complete player and is among the league leaders in scoring.
Biggie drafted himself a gem.
2)
Phil Smith SG 24 6'4'' 185 B B B B+ C B
Phil Smith SG 24 6'4'' 185 B B+ B+ A- C+ B
+4
Phil Smith took awhile, but has finally arrived. +4 since before TC and while the numbers aren't there yet, they surely will come soon.
Unlike Randy Smith, who is a ratings warrior but doesn't do much statistically, Phil has better handles and it looks like he may still have some upside.
Jay must be thrilled that he finally came around.
3)
John Drew SF 22 6'6'' 205 A- B+ D+ B- C+ A
John Drew SF 22 6'6'' 205 A- B+ C- B+ B- B
+4
Traded in the KAJ deal that was criticized at first, Drew looks like the next Campy Russell. His handles rating isn't great, but the rest of his game makes it look like he'll be a really solid player.
While KAJ is in a league of his own, getting Drew and Sobers was a nice haul by the newly managed Miami Heat organization.
HF wants to put his personal stamp on the team and this was definitely a good start.
4)
Billy Knight SG 24 6'6'' 195 B A- C- B- C- B
Billy Knight SG 24 6'6'' 195 B+ A C B C- C
+4
Since he's in Utah, nobody said much, but Knight went from being meh to being great very quickly.
His scoring ratings make it look like he's going to be a start for a long time.
With some ACs, Knight could get up to A- A scoring ratings, which would make him comparable to Austin Carr.
5)
Gus Gerard PF 23 6'8'' 200 B- C+ B- A- B B
Gus Gerard PF 23 6'8'' 200 B- B- B A B+ B
+4
Gerard was a very intriguing player last draft and he showed why during this TC. He still needs work offensively, but the rest of his game makes him very unique.
Once his offensive game comes around, he'll be exceptionally valuable.
Like Knight, Gerard is in Utah, so nobody's talking much about him.
Judging by the TC threat, JAH has taken notice and it looks like we have another Utah Jazz lifer on our hands.
6)
John Mengelt PG 27 6'2'' 185 C+ A+ C+ B C- B
John Mengelt PG 27 6'2'' 185 B- A+ C+ A- C- C
+3
Habes pumped tons of ACs and RCs into Mengelt and he's suddenly one of the best point guards in the league.
Some thought of him as a bad contract (I wasn't among them), but those questions have been answered with his new look ratings.
Ratings aside, his numbers are also fantastic.
Habes has been saying that he expects him to be a 30 ppg scorer and that day doesn't look too far away.
7)
Darryl Dawkins PF 19 6'11'' 251 B+ D+ D+ B+ C+ B
Darryl Dawkins PF 19 6'11'' 251 A- C- D+ A- C+ B
+3
Dawkins went from being a questionable first overall choice to likely now being the most valuable player from the entire draft.
As much as I like Roundfield and Robinzine, with Dawkins being 19 and having the TC that he had, there's not a single player from the 2045 draft that I'd trade him for straight up.
Kudos to the M.I.A. dewaynec for making the right choice and taking Dawkins 1st overall.
9)
Dennis Johnson PG 22 6'4'' 185 B C C+ A- C B
Dennis Johnson PG 22 6'4'' 185 B C+ B- A C B
+3
DJ looks like a really solid talent namely because his defensive rating went up.
Right now, he's backing up the 1/2/3 and putting up modest numbers, but the exciting thing about DJ are his steal and block averages, which make him unique for his position.
With a few ACs, DJ will continue to build on his ratings and become an even more complete player.
Additionally, having C rebounding or higher at PG increases a player's value tremendously.
9)
Andre McCarter PG 23 6'3'' 190 C+ B B+ B+ D+ C
Andre McCarter PG 23 6'3'' 190 C+ B+ A- A- D C
+2
Sure, he only had a +2 TC, but he went from being a backup to being a really good starter right away.
Averaging approximately 22/4/10 with a moderate topg number makes him a likely career starter in his second season after being selected in the 2nd round.
The Hornets have uncovered a gem.
10)
Bill Robinzine SF 23 6'7'' 230 B B+ C- B+ B- B
Bill Robinzine SF 23 6'7'' 230 B+ A- C- A- C+ B
+2
Robinzine also had a +2 TC, but he went up where it counts most.
Right now, his stats are coming along, but in the long haul, I expect that he'll be an A- A- scorer with A- defense and above average rebounding at small forward.
There's not much more that you can ask for in a late first round selection.
