Redrafting the 2041 draft 5 years later...
I just needed an AC so I decided to redraft the 2041 draft myself after 5 seasons. Here's what I came up with, leave opinions if you disagree with something.
1. Julius Erving SF 26 6'6'' 200 A- A B+ A B- B
Career: --- 405 35.8 3289 7019 .469 1365 1641 .832 845 1947 .434 7.0 4.2 1.5 1.5 2.3 8 21.7
Julius Erving is the best player in this draft but not by much, some people would prefer Fred Brown over him... But I think he is only better because of his defensive skill set. Since entering the league hes won Rookie of the year, 2-time 3pt champion and has made the all star team. He shoots nice percentages, his only weakness is his turnovers.
(No change in draft spot)
2. Fred Brown SG 28 6'3'' 182 B+ A- A- B+ C+ C
Career: --- 407 34.1 3806 7865 .484 1744 2058 .847 930 2143 .434 6.5 4.1 1.3 0.3 2.0 8 25.3
As I said above, he could be the number 1 pick... but I have him as the number 2. Fred Brown is an extremely good scorer and can score from anywhere. His rebounding ability for a SG is what makes him complete. Just like Erving, his only weakness are his turnovers.
(Up 4 spots from #6)
3. Artis Gilmore C 27 7'2'' 240 B C C- A A- C
Career: --- 415 33.5 1985 4339 .457 1555 2040 .762 9 42 .214 11.8 1.6 0.9 3.6 2.0 37 13.3
Gilmore is one of the leagues best shot blockers. There are a lot of GM's who would select him here just because of that, but Carr could also go here because of his scoring... depends really on what the team needs. Gilmore has made the all league defensive 2nd team twice in his 5 years here.
(Down 1 spot from #2)
4. Austin Carr SG 28 6'4'' 200 A- A C B+ C- B
Career: --- 409 37.6 4061 8455 .480 2033 2376 .856 867 2094 .414 4.9 2.5 1.6 0.2 1.3 13 26.9
Carr leads this rookie class in career scoring. He is a stud scorer that really doesn't do much of anything else. At least he can be a reliable #1 option that won't turn the ball over. If he was a better defender and a better rebounder he would be considered a top 10 player.
(No change in draft spot)
5. Clifford Ray PF 27 6'9'' 230 B+ D+ C- A A B
Career: --- 385 25.9 1454 3359 .433 1100 1702 .646 0 0 .000 8.6 1.3 0.7 1.5 1.3 19 10.4
Clifford Ray didn't start his first 3 years in the league... but in the last 3 years he has been a beast putting up about 14/11 with 2 blocks per game. He is one of the reasons Denver was so successful last season.
(Up 6 spots from #11)
6. Darnell Hillman SF 27 6'9'' 215 A- C D+ A- B C
Career: --- 406 31.1 1589 3898 .408 1277 1744 .732 16 65 .246 8.5 1.4 0.8 2.8 1.3 18 11.0
Awful FG%... but hes a SF who can put up close to a double double each night and he blocks about 3 shots a game. It would be hard not to select him at this selection in the draft.
(Up 2 spots from #8)
7. Elmore Smith C 27 7'0'' 250 C+ D+ D- A A- C
Career: --- 400 32.0 1492 3606 .414 1036 1745 .594 0 2 .000 10.6 1.3 0.8 3.5 1.2 33 10.1
He isn't a threat at all offensively but hes another GREAT shot blocker in this class who can block close to 4 shots a night. He is also a pretty decent rebounder. He didn't change his draft position after 5 years.
(No change in draft spot)
8. Mike Gale SG 26 6'4'' 185 B+ A- B A- C D
Career: --- 353 35.8 2739 6086 .450 1046 1235 .847 714 1863 .383 5.6 4.2 1.6 0.2 1.9 22 20.5
Solid scorer and rebounder for his position and really improved his game in every catagory from when he was drafted. With all the talent above I don't see him being selected any higher than #8 after 5 seasons.
(Up 7 spots from #15)
9. John Mengelt PG 27 6'2'' 185 C+ A+ C+ A- C- C
Career: --- 385 35.2 2848 5819 .489 1075 1171 .918 662 1579 .419 3.8 8.4 1.2 0.2 2.5 4 19.3
What a surprise this kid was, a second rounder moving up to the top 10 in the class? He is one of the better shooters in this league and he actually developed a solid defensive game over the last 5 seasons.
(Up 24 spots from #33)
10. Randy Denton C 27 6'10'' 240 B+ C- D+ B A D
Career: --- 395 30.0 2247 5066 .444 1730 2331 .742 0 0 .000 10.5 1.4 0.7 1.4 1.0 36 15.8
He came into the league with nearly no defensive skills but managed to become a decent shot blocker and ball stealer which is why he goes above Goo Kennedy as they are similar players. Denton also is a pretty solid inside scorer and started out this season nicely.
(Down 1 spot from #9)
11. Goo Kennedy PF 27 6'5'' 205 A- C- C- B A B
Career: --- 416 29.0 2431 5285 .460 1513 2155 .702 0 0 .000 9.7 1.6 1.0 0.3 0.9 43 15.3
Very solid undersized big man who rebounds well and can score inside, but he doesn't have much defensively otherwise he would be much higher. He hasn't developed too much since entering the league though which is disappointing.
(Down 1 spot from #10)
12. Tom Owens C 27 6'10'' 215 A- C C B- A- B
Career: --- 398 29.0 2060 4457 .462 1427 1830 .780 22 66 .333 8.2 1.9 0.8 0.5 1.3 9 14.0
From here it could go any direction honestly. I think Tom Owens would be the reasonable pick because of his scoring ability, he is a very good inside/outside big man and shoots a nice free throw percentage.
(Up 8 spots from #20)
13. Charles Johnson PG 27 6'0'' 170 C+ B- B A- C B
Career: --- 375 33.0 1967 4384 .449 956 1076 .888 75 249 .301 5.3 7.0 1.3 0.1 1.7 3 13.2
He really got a huge contract from someone and isn't worth that price but he does take pretty good care of the basketball and is a good rebounder for a PG. He doesn't have much of an outside shot but he came into the league and has developed it since being drafted.
(Down 1 spot from #12)
14. George Trapp SF 28 6'8'' 205 B C C- A- C+ C
Career: --- 407 27.4 1820 3412 .533 1074 1343 .800 0 0 .000 5.2 1.5 1.0 0.2 0.7 4 11.6
Trapp is a really solid player which is why he has the contract he has. Repole really likes this guy and its because he has such a high FG% shooting a career average of 53% and he doesn't turn the ball over. Trapp is the kind of roleplayer you want out on the court if you are a contender which is why his team plays so well.
(Up 11 spots from #25)
