A very deep draft. I wouldn't call it a great draft because nobody really stands out. I could see six guys going first but each of them has flaws: bigs that shoot threes, guys that don't rebound or play d, handling issues etc. On the other hand it wouldn't be a total shock if a later lotto ends up being the best player in the draft. All in all not as good as last year's class but a solid overall draft.
1. Chicago Bulls - Dan Roundfield PF 6'8'' 205 22 B C D+ B+ B A
Obviously Spencer knew that Play would tank this year and he planned this draft in order to drive Play crazy. I really am not sure at all about this draft bc all the best players have issues. Dan chucks up threes and isn't a great ball handler. Still he can score inside and has a nice jumpshot. He rebound, blocks and even will get some steals. He is also the most bustproof of the 6.
2. Minnesota Timberwolves - Darryl Dawkins C 6'11'' 251 18 B D+ D+ B C+ A
High risk, high reward. Darryl's young enough to work on his game and be the best player in the class but he will have to get his ft% to acceptable levels and improve his rebounding and handling. He will block shots and score inside and has more time to work on his flaws.
3. Philadelphia 76ers - World B. Free SG 6'2'' 185 21 B B- B- C D+ A
One thing that I don't like about this draft is that 2 of the players in contention for #1,Free and David Thompson, remind me of Billy Knight who went much later last year. I think that Free will be a stud scorer. He can score from anywhere, is extremely quick and shouldn't have handling issues.
4. New Orleans Hornets - David Thompson SG 6'4'' 195 21 B B C C D+ A
Wouldn't shock me to see this pick get traded. NOH has some talented youth with d'antoni, doc, mickey. I really think Thompson might be the best scorer in the draft. His slight to issue will keep him behind Free but nobody would be shocked if DT ends up being the best player in the draft.
5. Cleveland Cavaliers - Ricky Sobers PG 6'3'' 198 22 B- B- B B C- A
I know that Alvin was listed as a possibility for the top spot and Rickey wasn't but fbb is generally nice to pgs in tc. Rickey starts off as a good scorer with good quickness and as a solid defender. This pick has as much to do with Alvin's flaws as with Rickey's strengths.
6. Atlanta Hawks - Alvan Adams C 6'9'' 210 21 B C B B C+ A
Pretty easy pick here. Adams can score inside and has a decent jumpshot. He will get steals and eventually blocks. He drops to here bc he shoots too many threes and has poor handles.
7. Charlotte Bobcats - Gus Williams PG 6'2'' 175 22 B C B B D A
Can't shoot the three. That is pretty much what stands between him and being #1 overall. The lack of rebounding can be forgiven but not being able to hit the three is a big turnoff. Does everything else well though and he should start for years to come.
8. Milwaukee Bucks - Bill Willoughby PF 6'8'' 205 18 C+ C C B C A
Not a big fan of anybody left. A bunch look like decent starters but Bill has star quality. Will he live up to his potential? Nobody knows but at this point in the draft it is worth the risk. And he can block shots which is always a plus.
9. Chicago Bulls (from NJ Nets) - Joe Meriweather C 6'10'' 215 22 C+ C D B C+ A
Another raw player with upside. More developed than Bill but also 4 years older. Blocks shots and can defend the post. Why does he shoot three? Nobody knows.
10. Memphis Grizzlies - Tom Boswell C 6'9'' 220 22 B B C- B B- B
I remember some guys that looked like this and they never worked out. Can't remember the names which says something either about my memory or about the fact that they were forgettable. "Big time handling issues" – those 4 little words cost him millions. Other negative is no blocks/steals. Still he is a very good rebounder and post defender as well as a scorer.
11. Denver Nuggets - Gus Gerard SF 6'8'' 200 22 C+ C+ B- A B B
Upside – joe ellis. Downside – john Wetzel. Not really sure why he should be 8-10. He probably has a sick jump shot and no 3pt shot. Handles, D, rebounding. He could start on a championship team or wallow on the bench for a mediocre team. Has to be on the right team to be good.
12. Utah Jazz - Lionel Hollins PG 6'3'' 185 22 C+ B- B B- C- B
Most teams would take Webster here but with Smith, Johnson and Roberson there won't be a ton of place for Marvin. Lionel is a solid pg. Good at everything, great at nothing.
13.Dallas Mavericks- Marvin Webster C 7'1'' 225 23 C+ C D A- B B
Plays D, boards and blocks shots. It just seems easier these days to find a good wing in fa so it makes more sense to draft marvin and then try to find a wing in fa than the other way around.
14. LA Lakers (from Miami Heat) - Kevin Grevey SG 6'5'' 210 22 B- A- C- C C- B
15. Detroit Pistons - Clyde Mayes PF 6'8'' 225 22 C D+ D+ A- C B
16. Charlotte Bobcats (from Washington Wizards)- Bill Robinzine SF 6'7'' 230 22 B B D+ B C+ B
