1. Phoenix Suns - Bob Lanier C 6'11'' 250 22 B C D+ A- B A
If Spence says a guy should go #1, you take him #1. People wanted to argue about Havlicek and look at how that has worked out. Lanier is a great addition for the Suns to add in their first year rebuilding. He will be a franchise player and the latest great center to enter the league. The one knock on Lanier’s game is his turnovers. Since the Suns will be in no hurry to win, this is actually another advantage of adding Lanier. By the time the team is ready to contend again, he should have the TO issue minimized. Even with Lanier, the Suns will need to have another strong season of tanking to add a second star player. Bradley and Allen look like role players to me. If Bradley could get his handles to B, he could be a great PG.
2. Atlanta Hawks (from Memphis Grizzlies) - Dave Cowens C 6'9'' 230 22 B- C C+ B A- A
With Dick Van Arsdale already at SG, this is an easy pick for the Hawks. There is no point in adding a potentially turnover prone and defensively weak SG in Pete Maravich at this pick. Having said all of that, I really prefer Cowens because having a plus rebounder at the 3 is essential. Drafting Maravich prevents that. Cowens won’t be a great shot blocker, but with immediate RC+AC attention he could get to 3 a game. Either way, he is an immediate upgrade over Boerwinkle. Since Boerwinkle is not a bad starting option, this pick may be best spent on a trade to acquire a younger star player.
3. San Antonio Spurs - Pete Maravich SG 6'5'' 197 23 B+ B+ B+ C C B
I don’t know how you manage to lose this much with Dave DeBusschere and Tom Van Arsdale, but the Spurs did. Maravich is an excellent third prize in any draft. The guy will be a #1 option for the duration of his career. Since he will get steals, Maravich could one day draw comparisons to Willie Merriwether. However, playing him next to TVA could be less than ideal. Regardless of what the Spurs want to do, Joe needs to make some moves. I think holding onto Maravich and adding additional youth with Dave and TVA would be smart. It won’t be difficult to tank with Maravich for another season or two.
4. Dallas Mavericks - Dan Issel PF 6'9'' 235 22 B+ C+ C- C C A
The talent drop off from pick 3 to 4 could be substantial. I think there are some great players left, but no one is a sure thing like the first 3. Issel does not have the prettiest ratings, but he is going to be very good. In an inside offense, the guy could easily become a #1 option. His defense and rebounding will come around at some point. Even marginal increases will allow him to be considered elite. He should be moved to SF for the long run though.
5. Orlando Magic - George T. Johnson C 6'11'' 205 21 C+ C- D+ A- B B
I now see why repole wants to move this pick. There is no one that is going to really fit the system he wants to run. Johnson is probably a reach at this point, but shotblocking is always going to have value. I think there are better players on the board, but Johnson could end up being Bumper 2. If that’s the case, he is easily worth this pick.
6. Los Angeles Clippers (from Miami Heat) - Rudy Tomjanovich SF 6'8'' 218 21 B+ C D+ B C+ A
Since Rudy could go as high as pick 4, this would be a nice value pick. I’m assuming Marty will move this pick as long as it doesn’t move up, but I think that could be a mistake. Rudy would be a great fit next to Cazzie for the next several seasons.
7. Utah Jazz - Randy Smith SG 6'3'' 180 21 B B- B+ A- C+ B
The Jazz need a lot of help. Even though Adelman is terrible, I’m sure Jah will avoid a PG because Adelman has nice ratings. I don’t think Smith should be drafted in the lotto, but he has nice ratings. To me, he sounds like a bust. In other words, he is very similar to several of Jah’s selections in the past.
8. Los Angeles Lakers - John Johnson SF 6'7'' 200 23 B C+ C+ B C+ A
The Lakers should try to use at least 2 of their lottos to move up like someone did for Bob Rule a few seasons ago. While that move was a failure, this one has much better chance of seeing success. Johnson sounds like he will be a good player, but nothing special. TO concerns would make me look to alternatives, but I think someone in the 7 to 10 range will take him.
9. Los Angeles Lakers (from Detroit Pistons) - Gar Heard SF 6'6'' 219 22 C+ C- C- A- B A
I really like Heard. He will be a great supersub on a team that can score or a starter that is shut down defender at the 3 or 4. I think players like this can go a long way towards being successful in the league. Regardless of what LA does with its other picks, he should be a great fit.
10. Detroit Pistons (from Philadelphia 76ers)- Charlie Scott SF 6'5'' 175 21 B+ C+ A- B+ C+ B
If Clark and Block resign, the Pistons could have playoff potential. If they don’t, particularly Clark, the team will be in serious trouble. Adding a big man could make a lot of sense, but every big man left is a role player. Adding a young wing is the next best option. Scott is arguably the second best SF prospect in the draft. He should be at least a good role player.
11. Toronto Raptors - Tiny Archibald PG 6'1'' 150 22 B- B- B+ C D- A
I actually prefer Calvin Murphy. He is definitely a safer pick. However, Archibald has a much better chance at becoming a good player whereas Murphy will just be average. Webb is very meh to me so taking a PG makes sense. DJ will be looking for a SF though. Since Johnson and Scott are gone, Archibald is the pick. Some people will think he is great value at 11. I’m not one of them.
12. Minnesota Timberwolves (from Atlanta Hawks) - Sam Lacey C 6'10'' 235 22 C+ C C- A- A- B
The Timberwolves need a true center to move Bill Cunningham back to PF. Lacey does this and will help replace the shot blocking lost after the Mel Daniels trade. Lacey is a great fit for the Wolves and would be ideal at pick 12.
13. Los Angeles Lakers (from Boston Celtics)- Geoff Petrie SG 6'4'' 190 22 C A- C+ C D A
If the Lakers want to use Lou Hudson in an outside offense, this would be a great pick. If that is the case, Petrie would probably be worth one of the Lakers lotto selections. He will be a great player in an outside focus. His rebounding will really hurt his value though. It would be difficult to start him and Ron Williams together.
