Glossary:
PER - an attempt at combing all stats into one, per minute rating. Meh, not that applicable here, but I listed it anyways. Average is 15.
fbb_oRtg - a player's points produced per 100 possessions used, taking into account shooting efficiency, turnover rate, and offensive rebounding. League average is 112.4.
Poss% - The percentage of a team's possessions that a player used, primarily by taking a shot, getting to the free throw line, or turning the ball over.
TS% - A true measure of shooting efficiency, similar to eFG% except it also factors in free throws. League average is 53.6%.
TO/poss - The percentage of possessions a player turned the ball over. Again, assists are not factored into possessions. League average is 11.2%.
REB% - The percentage of available rebounds a player grabbed while on the court. League average is 10%.
SF Top 10 Rankings
These rankings do not take contract or age into account, only who the best players in the league are right now, at this very moment. To decide that, I've used stats primarily from this season combined with ratings and a given player's statistical history.
1. Elgin Baylor SF 35 6'5'' 235 A- A B A+ B+ C
-MVP! MVP! Elgin has been absolutely incredible this season, carrying the entire Knicks offense (and defense) on his back. I can't imagine wanting anything more out of a player, and I'm a little amazed that he's still this good at 35.
2. Horace Walker SF 31 6'4'' 219 A C C- A- B+ D
-Offensively Ho is good, not great, though still probably good enough to make this list without his defensive impact. Of course, it's his defensive impact that makes him truly special. The blocks, rebounding, and lack of turnovers are all huge pluses, and though he's not on Elgin's level, he's one of the best all around players in the game.
3. Larry Jones SF 27 6'2'' 183 A A C- A+ B- B
-Everytime I look at Jones' ratings I get a little jealous. Offensively he's pretty close to being the perfect player, though he still isn't as efficient as Elgin, and defensively he picks up a nice number of steals. The Jerry West to Larry Jones connection might be the best in the league.
4. Lou Hudson SF 25 6'5'' 210 B+ A C B+ C+ B
-Remember when Lou and Larry were teammates? Now that he's outside of Larry's shadow, Lou's had a chance to spread his wings a bit and take lead on the Lakers. The 31 points and 7 rebounds are enough to earn him a spot in the top 5 on this list, though apparnetly not enough to win the Lakers any games. Scary to think how bad they'd be without Lou.
5. Oscar Robertson SF 31 6'5'' 205 A B+ C+ A- C+ C
-Spending time mainly at PG, Oscar's had himself a nice season. It doesn't appear that he'll repeat as MVP though, partially because of missed games, but mainly because of Elgin Baylor's existence. He's a true do it all, though he doesn't do it all quite as well as some of the other SFs ahead of him.
6. Johnny Green SF 35 6'5'' 205 A C D+ B- A- C
-Green's value has been evident the past few seasons as a member of the Magic, and this year it's no different in Portland. The superb rebounding on the wings to go with 50% plus shooting is pretty incredible. What's interesting though is that despite his incredibly high FG%, his TS% isn't especially noteworthy, largely because he doesn't shoot FTs that well.
7. Chet Walker SF 29 6'6'' 215 A A- C- B- B C
-There was a time where Chet looked like he'd rack up the MVP awards, but ultimately he's settled in as a great scorer who can rebound, but not do much else. Defensively he's mediocre, and while he's a great scorer, he hasn't separated himself from any of these other top 10 SFs in that regard.
8. Dwayne Smith SF 31 6'6'' 218 B+ A B A C- C
-Smith's always seemed like an under the radar type to me, I often forget he exists, but he's about as solid of a SF as you'll find. He's more efficient than anyone other than Baylor, and puts up a good amount of volume in the process.
9. George Carter SF 25 6'4'' 210 A- C C- A C+ D
-Carter has gotten the opportunity to put up some pretty big volume, and risen to the occasion so far this season. Defensively he's rock solid, and offensively he's been better than I would have expected. If he continues to shoot this well, he'll be a fixture on this list for a while.
10. Tom Van Arsdale SF 26 6'5'' 202 A- A C- A- C C
-TVA doesn't have the all around game that most of the other guys on this list have, but he's a quality scorer who gets the job done efficiently. His biggest weakness is on the glass, and thus he probably should be spending all of his time at SG, but he's a damned good player regardless.
Honorable Mention
Rayford Wells - Hasn't played much this year, but he may be the Piston's most important player.
Bingo Smith - His efficiency offensively isn't quite up to par with the above guys. Yet.
Bob Sims - Real solid player all around.
Maurice McHartley - Quality player, unfortunately there are a lot of quality SFs and he just misses this list.
Bob Love - Terrific offensive player.
Don Nelson - 125 oRtg is great, doesn't put up the huge volume that other SFs do though.
Bill Bradley - Not sure his lack of rebounding is overcome by the rest of his game. Should be exclusively a SG.
Levern Tart - With those ratings, he should be a shoe in for top 10. But a 118 oRtg is mediocre for a SF.
Dave DeBusscher - See Tart.
Willie Norwood - The 50% shooting is nice, but with so many great SFs he doesn't really stand out.
Dishonorable Mention
Don Kojis - 104 oRtg, awful.
Luther Green - 105 oRtg, the next Johnny Green he is not.
