I think my lappy is fried guys. Woke up to a loud grinding noise this afternoon. I knew it was my laptop as it has done it a few times over the last couple of months. My "fix" was always to just shut it down and let the fan chill out as I assume this is whats causing the noise. Usually all is fine after a few hours. This time around was different as I got a system disk error (Does this mean HDD is fried?). I powered on and off a few times just to be sure but kept getting the same error. Decided I would try a fresh install of Windows. I swapped the boot order to the CD/DVD drive first, popped the CD in and let it ride. After the initial boot screen I got nothing but darkness... not even an error screen this time. Decided to stop right there as I was tight.. and the food was just about ready.
I'm posting what I did just in case anyone might have any ideas on a fix. I'm thinking I should open it up since I have nothing to lose at this point. However I'd be lying if I said I had ANY knowledge of computer hardware. Worst part about this is I'm kinda broke right now... I've been in Christmas mode.
Sorry for the long post. I do have access to another computer but meh.. it's not the same. My activity might be poor. We'll see

Is the noise more of a clicking sound?
What's the exact error message you receive?

My first thoughts would be the harddrive is done.
Generally the hard drive is responsible for loading the OS and when the HD is fucked it can't load the operating system.
Clicking noise is associated with the HD.

Also, your master boot record could be corrupted.
I doubt u could fix that due to the HD being physically unable to use but here is way to fix the corrupted "MBR".

You're saying you can't even boot from a CD right now?

Is the noise more of a clicking sound? What's the exact error message you receive? nah this is far more obnoxious than a clicking sound. It's like the computer is revving its engine lol. I don't know how to explain it but yea. A loud grinding sound I guess I'm not near the laptop right now but I'll try and post the exact error tomorrow

You're saying you can't even boot from a CD right now? It appears so.. I don't think I made a mistake because I went from at least getting some kind of an error to just a black screen after the switch

Also a detail that may be important here. In previous cases when I left the computer off that grinding noise would disappear completely. Today while I was restarting and trying to run from cd, etc. the computer would still make that noise at random. It's so weird. It would literally stop for a few then start again. Sucks

Ideally it just fixes itself like it used to. It's never been this bad though so I'm worried this thing is finally finished. Had it since 06 so ya it's pretty old. Not ready to cop a new lappy just yet I want a nice one in case I decided to get back on my nerd shit (PC Gaming). Don't want to get one of those cheapies at Walmart. And I doubt any of the black friday/cyber monday deals bring a laptop that I want
It was all good just yesterday. meh

Eh if you can't boot from a CD, that tends to mean there's something wrong with your motherboard (or BIOS, but since you haven't mentioned anything about updating those, I'll assume not). A clicking sound isn't really consistent with that though...
