SG Top 10 Rankings
These rankings do not take contract or age into account, only who the best players in the league are right now, at this very moment. To decide that, I've used stats primarily from this season combined with ratings and a given player's statistical history.
1. Hot Rod Hundley SG 31 6'4'' 194 A- A- A A- C B
-I'm going to be blunt and say that I have no idea what to do with the top 4 or so in these rankings. I gave Hot Rod the top spot largely because of the steals he racks up. Offensively he's probably a little worse than Jones and Greer, but the steal rate is just awesome. If someone challenges this ranking I won't be able to argue it convincingly.
2. Larry Jones SG 22 6'2'' 180 A- A- C- A- C+ A
-Talk about a break out year, Larry Jones absolutely burst onto the scene last season. He's as impressive a volume scorer as you'll find this side of Don Ohl, and he's a pretty damned good rebounder. The turnovers are a little high, and his efficiency isn't elite, but that doesn't stop him from being one of the better players in the league.
3. Hal Greer SF 28 6'2'' 181 A- A B A- C+ B
-You could easily make the case that Greer's the best SG in the league, and I wouldn't necessarily disagree with you. He's more efficient on offense than Hot Rod, but not quite the same caliber of ballhawk on defense. Their volume is similar, and though Greer turns it over a little more often, he's also a better rebounder.
4. Don Ohl SG 29 6'3'' 193 B+ A+ B- C D C
-I put Ohl at 4 because he's a less complete player than the guys ahead of him. With that said, make no mistake, Ohl is the best scorer in the league at this point. His 132.4 oRtg is the best in the league, and that's coming from a guy who's putting up huge volume. The value in that is huge. He does have holes in his game however, mainly that he's a terrible rebounder and defensively isn't going to contribute much.
5. Frank Ramsey SG 34 6'4'' 206 B- A+ B- A+ C B
-Frank is probably the biggest reason the Pistons are still being managed by Andy. Ramsey doesn't have a hole in his game, and though he's not quite dominant like some of the guys above him, he's the type of player that could be inserted on absolutely any team and make them significantly better.
6. Willie Merriwether SG 28 6'3'' 205 B A C B- C C
-In terms of pure scoring, the only guy I'd take ahead of Willie is Ohl. Willie can light it up from anywhere, in many ways reminiscent of a prime Omar Green. He's not quite on that level, but he's a hell of a scorer.
7. Theophileus Lloyd SG 31 6'3'' 196 C+ A+ B+ A- D+ B
-I remember when Lloyd had a breakout TC for the Raptors a few years ago, and I wondered whether he'd be the type of guy who actually plays up to his ratings. Well, he's answered that pretty emphatically, solidfying himself as a top 10 SG. He's essentially a slightly worse version of Merriwether, and considering where he started, I'm sure DJ is thrilled with that.
8. York Larese SG 27 6'4'' 186 B- A+ C- A- C D
-After Lloyd there's a pretty big drop off in terms of volume production. York's the best of the rest in terms of efficiency scoring the ball, and that earned him this spot. He's not going to carry an offense on his back, but he'll absolutely help.
9. John Havlicek SG 6'5'' 206 25 B- A B- B+ C B
-The prize free agent of the offseason is sure to get a MAX contract. Hopefully, those offering that MAX deal are offering it expecting John to get better, because at this point I'm not sure his game is truly worthy of a Max. Make no mistake, Hondo is a damned good player, but he's still got a ways to go before anyone can consider him great. He'll especially have to get those turnovers under control if he wants to reach that level.
10. Si Green SG 31 6'2'' 197 B A B A C C
-To me, Si Green has never really lived up to the hype. He's a solid rebounder, gets some steals, and doesn't turn it over too often. All that to go with B A scoring ratings, and you'd expect a dominant player, but for whatever reason, Green has never really shot the ball that well. I may scout him just because I'm curious what's going on behind the scenes for him. Perhaps he's weak or slow, or his inside is entirely jumping based, but even so, I'd expect better percentages.
Honorable Mention
Omar Green - Still a pretty efficient scorer, but not at the level he used to be.
Bob Sims - Efficiency is a little subpar for a SG, puts up volume though.
George Lee - Really solid offensive player.
Jeff Mullins - Pretty good rookie campaign
Kevin Loughery - Efficient scorer
Gerry Ward - Shoots the ball well.
Vern Hatton - Good shooter, the lack of rebounds really hurts seeing as he doesn't put up big volume.
Douglas Washington - More of a role player now, but more efficient than he used to be.
Dishonorable Mention
Joe Caldwell - Really, really inefficient. He's young, but he's got a ways to go.
