1. Phoenix Suns- Billy Cunnigham PF 6'6'' 215 22 B C C B B+ A
The notes say there is a debate as to who goes #1. I don’t think there is one. Billy Cunningham is a complete big man and will be an elite player in this league. He is a good scorer, state defender, and rebounder. The guy is going to put up at least 20 10 and 3 a night, which is a very rare combination. The one reason why you may like Barry over Cunningham is because Cunningham may not end up being a #1 option type of scorer. Nevertheless, I would rather have a great big over a stud wing everytime.
2. Los Angeles Clippers - Rick Barry SF 6'7'' 205 21 A- B C C+ C A
The second pick is the easiest choice in this draft. Barry is clearly better than every prospect besides Cunningham. Barry going to the Clippers could end up being an awesome thing to see. Combining him with last years third pick would give the Clippers the possibility of having one of the top shooting and outside scoring offenses in the league. As I already mentioned, Barry is going to be a #1 option type of scorer. Anyone with that type of talent is a great guy to build around. This is a great start to the Clippers rebuild.
3. Cleveland Cavaliers - Bob Love PF 6'8'' 215 22 B+ C+ D+ B C+ A
CC has recently mentioned he doesn’t feel a need to add a PF with the play of Wayne Hightower. While Hightower’s play has been a great surprise, it should not keep CC from adding to his strength. Bob Love would allow CC to run an inside focus with three good young big men. Also, at least in my opinion, Love is better suited to play SF. Moving him there would allow all three of the big men to see the court at the same time. Love isn’t the clear cut best player at this point in time. I think you can make a case for any of Bob Weiss, Bill Bradley, or Dick Van Arsdale. However, Love is by far the safest pick out of all of them and that is crucial because neither of the other two is likely to be a star.
4. Orlando Magic - Bob Weiss PG 6'2'' 180 23 C B B C+ D+ A
The Magic have a few good pieces already in place, but lack any future at point guard. Bob Weiss is the best point guard in this draft and fills an immediate need for the Magic. The league has consistently seen less and less dominant point guards over the past decade so adding a player who is going to be at the least a very good one is always a great move.
5. Dallas Mavericks - Dick Van Arsdale SG 6'5'' 210 22 B+ C+ C+ B C A
Greg would probably love to add Bob Weiss after his recent trade of Lavelle Langston, but in this mock that isn’t happening. He is left with his choice of wing men. I prefer Bill Bradley over Van Arsdale. However, Greg has an additional lottery pick that is project to go #9. This gives him the opportunity to draft both Dick and Tom Van Arsdale and get the 2 free RCs. I think that makes taking Van Arsdale over Bradley worth it. Dick Van Arsdale will be a good player in this league, but I’m a bit skeptical about how good he and his brother will be. I think after the top 4 guys and Bradley there isn’t a safe pick in the draft. Despite this, I think this is a move any team in Greg’s position should make.
6. Minnesota Timberwolves (from Portland Trail Blazers) - Bill Bradley SF 6'5'' 205 22 B B C A- C- B
The Wolves desperately need a PF. Bill Buntin may be worth this pick because he fills an immediate need for the Timberwolves. Having said that, I think Bill Bradley is the pick. He is ready to come in and contribute right away and will be a great asset to a team that is already a contender. Should the Wolves decide to take a big man such as Buntin, I don’t think that is a bad move considering they already have three very nice scorers.
7. Memphis Grizzlies -Bill Buntin C 6'7'' 250 23 B- C- C- A- B B
The Grizzlies just added Lavelle Langston from the Mavericks. This essentially removes them from the point guard market and the possibility of drafting Willie Somerset. The Langston trade created a bit of a hole up front for the Grizzlies. This is a hole that Bill Buntin can fill. The Grizzlies could also look to draft a small forward here, but none are worth this pick. For this reason, I think Buntin is a much smarter choice.
8. Dallas Mavericks (from Charlotte Bobcats) -Tom Van Arsdale SG 6'5'' 202 22 B B- C- B C A
The Mavericks could choose to take Willie Somerset here to fill their need at PG. I see two problems with this choice though. First, the Mavs have already invested in Dick Van Arsdale with their earlier pick. This gives them a significant incentive to take Tom and get 4 free RCs. Second, Somerset is not a conventional PG in any sense. While this may not bother some GMs, I do not see Greg falling into that category.
9. Miami Heat- Willie Somerset PG 5'8'' 170 23 B- B C C+ D A
Insane has continuously been promoting Chico Vaughn as a very good SG for much of this season. He has been doing this because Vaughn can’t play PG. Adding Somerset may not be ideal with a player like Walt Bellamy in the post, but he allows Vaughn to move to a position he is better at and gives Insane more options about how to develop the Heat.
10. Houston Rockets - Jon McGlocklin SG 6'5'' 205 22 A- C C- C+ C A
The Rockets have fallen dramatically in the past season as going from once championship favorites to now a lottery team. They now have a rebuild frontcourt and lack scoring. Jon McGlocklin seems like a great fit. He will provide instant offense to whatever team that drafts him. While he will be a defensive liability, the Rockets can probably afford to put up with this because of their strength on that end elsewhere.
11. Boston Celtics - Nate Bowman C 6'10'' 230 22 C+ D+ D C+ C+ A
It is difficult to guess what new Celtic management will do with this pick. The team didn’t have a real direction last season and is still stuck in limbo. Since the Celtics don’t have the pieces to build a real contender, I think a total rebuild is the best option. If that is the choice, then Nate Bowman should be considered. He is very raw and certainly a gamble. Should the gamble pay off then the Celtics will be back to winning before long.
12. Oklahoma City Thunder (from Washington Wizards) - Dave Stallworth PF 6'7'' 200 23 B C- C- A- C+ B
After the top ten selections, I think the draft essentially because role players of your choice. The Thunder need help at PG and SF, but neither is available at this pick. I think Dave Stallworth is one of the safer picks left and is probably better suited to play SF rather than PF. If Aaron decides to add big man depth, he has plenty to choose from.
13. Toronto Raptors (from New Jersey Nets)- Jim Washington PF 6'6'' 210 22 C+ C- D- B+ B+ B
The run of role type big men could start at any point after pick nine in this draft. I think this is where it really begins to takeoff. Jim Washington isn’t the prettiest ratings wise at this point in time, but he has the best notes. He doesn’t seem to have a flaw and will provide particularly well on the defense end.
