BBS Power Rankings - Day 50
The top 10...
1. Houston Rockets (28-7 .800%)
Wins against top 5: @ny by 3, @den by 9
Losses against top 5: @den by 1, DEN by 9, @min by 1, MIN by 29
The reigning champs are clearly the best team in the league. Scoring 15 more points against their opponents than they allow. They pretty much do everything a successful team needs to do to win, shooting high percentages every game which is why they are second in scoring, they rebound the ball very well, lead the league in assists and blocks, and lastly they take care of the ball. Kind of hard to put any team above Houston right now, but New York would be close.
2. New York Knicks (24-7 .774%)
Wins against top 5: None
Losses against top 5: HOU by 3
This is one of only two teams I think actually can beat the Houston Rockets if they were to meet in the finals. New York has Bob Petit who has been playing the best in his career this season at age 31 and the monster athlete in Johnny Green scoring a combined 65 points a night. Knicks are very similar in every catagory with the Houston Rockets, I really wouldn't be surprised to see them meet in the finals this year.
3. Chicago Bulls (25-7 .781%)
Wins against top 5: MIN by 1
Losses against top 5: None
Chicago is a very good team, they just aren't playing as well as they could be right now. With that said, they are still one of the top 3 teams in this league without a doubt led by the leagues reigning MVP Purnell Jackson. Once they start shooting better percentages and I am sure they will soon, they could still end up with the best record in the league over the Rockets.
4. Denver Nuggets (26-9 .743%)
Wins against top 5: HOU by 1, @hou by 9, MIN by 7
Losses against top 5: HOU by 9, @min by 9
One reason Denver is playing so well is because of their deadly outside offensive game. Defensively they aren't very impressive but with their offense scorching the opposing defense it doesn't seem to matter much. I'm not sure if they will finish the season as a top 5 team but we will have to wait and see. They will definitely have to step it up defensively and maybe find a better rebounding big as they are in the bottom 5 in rebounds.
5. Minnesota Timberwolves (23-10 .697%)
Wins against top 5: HOU by 1, @hou by 29, DEN by 9
Losses against top 5: @chi by 1, @den by 7
Wilt Chamberlain is playing abosolutely insane right now and will likely win the MVP award at the end of this season. The timberwolves have the scariest big man duo in the league, each can score, rebound and block shots. I think by the end of the season Minnesota will have a better record than Denver and be in the top 4.
6. New Orleans Hornets (24-10 .706%)
New Orleans was very close with the Wolves for the 5th spot in the rankings. I just think in a series Minnesota would win. New Orleans, like Minnesota have one of the best big man duos in the league. They are extremely limited to inside focus, non of their players have an outside range.
7. Indiana Pacers (20-10 .667%)
Indiana started the year off great and since the 14-4 start, they are just 6-6. Woody is huge for them defensively but no one on the team is very reliable offensively other than Barker. Wells doesn't seem like a 2nd option type player and Woody shoots awful percents to be an option. I think Indiana will end the year in the top 10 but are missing another reliable scoring option to actually compete with the top 5.
8. Boston Celtics (21-11 .656%)
Dean Hollis is the main reason this team is so damn good offensively. Boston has 3 players averaging more than 23 points a night which is why they lead the league in points per game. If this team had a good defensive big man they would be a top 5 team.
9. Atlanta Hawks (18-11 .621%)
Atlanta should be better than they really are. They have three players averaging all but 22 of their teams points. If they had some bench players that would get some extra minutes behind these players they might be a little better overall, but they have the starters to be a good team.
10. New Jersey Nets (19-12 .613%)
The Nets are in their contract year and started the year off slow. Now they are 19-12 and have one of the leagues best offenses. They have all the right players to win too so I don't think they will be getting fired. I think they would be really nice if they could make a trade for a shot blocking big man because their team has absolutely no blocking.
11. Toronto Raptors (18-12 .600%)
Team is good, just is shooting awful percents... Not sure how long they will be in this spot if they keep up this kind of shooting.
12. Philadelphia 76ers (22-19 .537%)
Two of the top 10 scorers on one team, that is pretty insane. Limits other players shots though, might explain why they aren't in the top 10 and have a slightly above .500 record.
13. Los Angeles Clippers (15-15 .500%)
Struggled early, but since the start they are 13-4. Should move on up into the top 10 within the next few weeks.
The rest...
14. Oklahoma City Thunder (21-17 .553%)
15. Milwaukee Bucks (19-16 .543%)
16. Miami Heat (18-15 .545%)
17. Utah Jazz (20-19 .513%)
18. San Antonio Spurs (17-16 .515%)
19. Los Angeles Lakers (17-20 .459%)
20. Dallas Mavericks (17-22 .436%)

22. Charlotte Bobcats (12-20 .375%)
23. Cleveland Cavaliers (10-26 .278%)
24. Phoenix Suns (8-22 .267%)
25. Orlando Magic (11-29 .275%)
26. Washington Wizards (9-28 .243%)
27. Detroit Pistons (9-29 .237%)
28. Memphis Grizzlies (7-27 .206%)
