MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS IN BBS: PART 3 (20-11)
Same as before, though I had a far tougher time sorting out some of these players, its tough to compare a 31 year old who is as dominant as they come offensively to younger players who offer better longevity and defensive stats. The last of the "Prospects" go here, with three guys you would consider still prospects I guess.
Part 1 can be found here
Part 2 can be found here
20. Nuggets Horace Walker PF 25 6'4'' 213 A- C C- A B+ B
Current Stats: 19.6 Points 11.5 Rebounds 2.6 assists, 2.3 steals 3.8 blocks. Shooting 43.3% from the field, 81.4% from the foul line.
Coming in at 20 is perennial DPOY candidate Horace Walker, and if he proves he can maintain the sort of off offense that he is showing right now, and improve his percentages, and resigns, he would jump to the top 10, because he is clearly the best statistical defender in the league. Night in and night out he tosses up ridiculous blocks and steals. He only falls this low because he is expiring, and that is kinda a tough spot to trade for, if he resigns this offseason he would probably jump up somewhere around the 15th spot. Actually, I guess wherever he signs he will jump to around 15...for that team, but for now trading for him involves risk, a risk that some may not be willing to take.
19. Bucks Larry Jones SF 21 6'2'' 180 A- B C B+ C A
Current Stats: 19.1 points 5.2 boards 1.7 assists 1.2 steals .5 blocks with 1.5 turnovers. Shooting 46.4% from the field 72.2% from the foul line and 38.5% from three.
I don’t know what to write here, fill it out for yourself, don’t wanna be accused of “talking” him up. I mean, dudes gone +8 so far, so he’s obviously got potential, but yeah. I value him probably more than this, but Im sure the league doesn’t.
18. Heat Nate Thurmond C 22 6'11'' 225 B- C- D B+ A- A
Current Stats: 15.1 Points 11.6 rebounds 1.9 assists .5 steals 1.9 blocks with .6 turnovers. Shooting 44.8% from the field, 67.4 from the Charity stripe.
I put Thurmond here based on the talk from insane, and the fact that he seems to shoot a lot, despite being seemingly poor offensively. I heard talk of Eddy Curry lite, and really, it would seem Nate has the kinda potential, I mean, he isn’t dominating already like Curry, but, 15 points a game on what I assume is an outside focused team, low turnovers, great rebounds at 11.6, 1.9 blocks. Dude has barely B- Inside…NO JUMPING. Is a future B+ C D A A big outta question? I don’t think so, I could easily see him doing something like 24 13 and 4 blocks…which is Jerry Lucas, which is yeah. Except Nate cant pass, which leads to more shooting, so, Derrick Favors with no athleticism might be a better comparison…I really don’t know.
17. Rockets Hot Rod Hundley SG 29 6'4'' 194 A- A A A- C C
Current Stats: 26.3 points 7 rebounds 4.7 assists 2 steals .6 blocks 1.7 turnovers. Shooting 49.4% froom the field 83.7% from the foul line 44.2% from three.
Hot Rod is underrated, but honestly, I couldn’t figure out where I wanted him, so he ended up here. I mean, there is no doubt he is a sick well rounded wing, and can do everything, and he plays for a title contender. He can defend, score, pass, rebound, pretty much everything. A lot like Manu was, except he cant play PG and can rebound. At this point every player seems like they should be higher. Unlike the other players though, Hot Rod has never had that truly dominant season, no 30 point plus types, so he falls here. I wouldnt blame you at all for feeling a bit slighted though.
16. Clippers K.C. Jones PG 31 6'1'' 206 B+ A A+ A C B
Current Stats: 33.1 Points 9.8 assists 5.5 rebounds 1.4 steals .7 blocks 1.4 turnovers. Shooting an astonishing 53.8% from the field 89% from the fould line and 54% from three..wtf
Jones is the first of the two 31 year olds, who really are as talented as anybody in the league, I really cant say why KC Jones is here, while Purnell and Barker are in the top 10 other than, well, I just felt like I would take the other guys on the list over them. Purnell has 4 titles, and is dominant to an extent that he makes your team a title contender, and while KC is amazing now, he doesn’t have a title. The other part is KC only has two years left on his deal, as compared to the 5 years left for both Purnell and Bradley. So KC would have to be signed most likely through being 39. That would suck if he declines suddenly and doesn’t retire. On the talent side KC is one of those do it all PG’s, he can score, rebound, pass, takes excellent care of the ball, defends, he does it all….but I just cant move him above Petit, who is a dominant big, Boozer Rudy Connie as they are all sick bigs. Maybe its cause there are a lotta PG’s, and that one year suddenly makes a big difference to me…I dunno, but yeah. Honestly, you could put KC anywhere up to 9 and I would have 0 issue with it. His stats right now are insane.
15. Knicks Bob Petit PF 31 6'9'' 220 A- C C- A- A B
Current Stats: 32.9 points 12.9 rebounds 2.5 assists 1.2 steals 2 blocks 1 turnover. Shooting 50.9% from the field and 85.4% from the foul line
Petit is stating a case for best player in the league right now, though really everybody loses automatically to Wilt, but hey, number 2 isn’t bad!!! Seriously though 33 points 13 boards is crazy, and he puts up 1.2 steals and 2 blocks to go with it. So why so low at 15? Well, he isn’t a stud shot blocker by any means, which instantly hurts value some, though he is solid, and he is 31, which limits his value to mainly well, anybody who is smart and wants to win, but most of all, he is expiring, and, despite their being little risk of losing him, the worry is that you will have to give him one of those truly awful contracts like Dean Hollis. Another reason is that can he truly maintain an output that is 7.5 points above his career averages for points, and percentages that are above his career bests? I dunno, but shit, dudes a stud. Thing is, the guys in front of him, Boozer-28.6 points 11.6 boards 3 blocks, percentages are shit right now, but he did far better percentages last year, and he is locked up for 6 years cheap. LaRusso is doing great percentages though less volume, but he blocks, passes and…well his rebounding is meh, but he is only 26, Dierking is a legitimate stud, with great percentages points rebounds blocks…everything except turnovers, and is locked up for 5 years.
14. Bobcats Bob Boozer PF 26 6'8'' 215 A- C C- B+ B+ C
Current Stats: 28 points 11 rebounds 2.9 assists 1 steal 2.8 blocks 1.6 turnovers, shooting 43.3% from the field 90.6% from the foul line.
The next three are really interchangeable, you could easily value any one of the three the most (actually, you could value Petit more too really) But first comes Bob Boozer; who is a bit slow to start the year…certainly not points wise, and he is averaging 3 blocks a game, but his FG% is absolute shit right now. He also is not a very good rebounder, doing 11 per game yes, but, on a team in which he iis the only decent rebounder , seriously, the Bobcats get outrebounded by 7 a game. Good for tanking, and inflating Bobs rebounds. Of the grouping of three Bob has the most offensive capability, and he did sign to a pretty fucking sick contract, considering it runs just 11.1 to 16.6 over the course of 6 years, only 1.4 million off the max, but, that’s still hard cap help. Also he is only 26. Last season his FG% was much better at 47.1% while doing 29 points a game, so we will see where he ends up.
13. Mavericks Connie Dierking C 27 6'9'' 231 A- C D+ A- B+ C
Current Stats: 24.4 Points 12.3 Rebounds 2.7 assists 0.6 steals 3.8 blocks 2.1 turnovers. Shooting 50% from the field and 74.7% from the charity stripe.
Connie has emerged quietly as a top tier big. While he isn’t going to blow you away by any means…well, actually maybe 24 12 and 4 would blow you away. Anyway, he has never put up this kind of output before, and I almost feel like his rebounding is a bit inflated maybe, cause the Mavericks are an awful rebounding team, with a -4 differential, but, he is shooting 50% from the field and well yeah. He does have a bitt of an issue with turnovers, but he is a stud shot blocker. All in all you really wouldn’t go wrong with any of these guys.
12. Hornets Rudy LaRusso C 26 6'8'' 225 A- C C A- A- C
Current Stats: 21.3 points 8.6 rebounds 3.5 assists .7 steals 3.1 blocks 1.5 turnovers. Shooting 49% from the field and 80.6% from the line.
I would love to put Rudy higher, really, but, he has started off so slow this year, I guess that’s what happens when you have Bill Russell lining up next to you. Rudy is a stud though, locked up for 5 years at 26, he is an efficient scorer, great passer, though not on Wilt levels, a great FT shooter, and, well, normally a very good rebounder. He also brings stud shot blocking to the table, averaging a ridiculous 4.2 last year for the Hornets. He really doesn’t have much in the way of flaws, which means he is the most valuable of the three in my mind. I mean, Connie has turnovers, Bob has Rebounds and currently percentages. You would obviously be happy to have any of the three.
11. Thunder Chet Walker SF 23 6'6'' 215 A B C B B+ A
Current Stats: 24.8 Points 8.1 rebounds 3.3 assists 0.9 steals 0.4 blocks 1.7 turnovers. Shooting 46.4% from the field, 84.1% from the foul line, 34.4% from 3.
The last “prospect” on the list, Chet has ridiculous ratings for 23, still shows that A scouted potential, and well, yeah. He rebounds, scores, passes, and isn’t a turnover whore, all things you love outta a young player. He is held back some by the fact that he is not a stats defender, but on the plus side, he is supposedly a great post defender, and you could put him at SF or PF. He is maybe playing a bit below his ratings right now, but, not gonna worry about that unless it continues to be a problem, right now he just looks amazing.
