This year's crop of rookies can be summed up in one word, meh. No obvious superstar. No all around top talent. Guys who are filled with question marks and weaknesses. Some guys can't play D, others can't score. Not a good year for tanking.
1. Milwaukee Bucks - Walt Hazzard PG 6'2'' 185 21 C+ C+ B B C A
Yeah they have Lenny Wilkens but at #1 you have to take a shot at stardom. Even though his scoring seems unpolished it can improve with time, especially since he has been touted as having big upside and pgs develop well in general.
2. Golden State Warriors - Nate Thurmond C 6'11'' 225 22 C+ C- D- B B+ A
Unlike the Bucks who actually have young talent, the Warriors are horrendous. This Gm is in serious danger of getting cyd. If his pick busts here, he is as good as gone. Thurmond's notes make him seem pretty immune to busting. At worst he should be a Stokes type player. Another plus is that they should be able to snag another top pick next year and flip it for talent before their cy.
3. San Antonio Spurs - Gus Johnson PF 6'6'' 230 25 A- C D+ C+ A- B
I like Bucky Allen and I assume that the Spurs will try to resign him so my guess is that they go with the pf, although they may try to move him to sf. He could end up being the best player in the draft.
4. Detroit Pistons - Eddie Miles SG 6'4'' 195 23 C+ B+ C C+ C- A
The Pistons have done a good job of ridding their team of any semblance of talent so they will just take the bps. Miles looks like he will be a scorer but will have defensive issues. He does have upside and has been touted as a top 5 selection so maybe his defense will improve enough to make him a top player.
5. Washington Wizards - Larry Jones SG 6'2'' 180 21 B+ C+ D+ C+ C A
Will be a stats defender who can't shoot from the outside. Has bust written all over him but Spencer said he should go top 5 so here he is.
6. Charlotte Bobcats - Joe Caldwell SF 6'5'' 195 21 A- C- C+ B C A
Picks 4-5-6 can go in any order. They could all develop into stars but they could all just as likely bust. All three look to be much better offensively than defensively. The Bobcats have assembled decent young talent and would love to get a center here. If Nate falls to the Bobcats, that would be great for them though I don't think it will happen. Hoover would be too much of a reach here so they will take Caldwell.
7. Memphis Grizzlies - Jerry Sloan SF 6'5'' 195 21 B- C+ C- A- C+ A
I really like Sloan. I just wouldn't want to pick him at #7. He is a no risk pick. Already a good defender, ball handler and rebounder he could start on most teams from day one. Offensively he might pan out bc he has nice upside but even if he doesn't he is the kind of player that is good to have around. Memphis probably won't be worried about drafting a player who plays the same position as their best player bc they will still be rebuilding next year.
8. Miami Heat - Jerry Greenspan SF 6'5'' 195 22 B+ C C B+ C B
I like the 2 centers better but not by much. The Heat already have Bellamy at center and Loughery at sg so they would probably like a pg at this point. The next point guard is Thorn and his notes are not very good. Greenspan should be a solid scorer albeit one with no three point shot. He is also a nice man to man defender in the post and should block some shots, which is always welcomed.
9. Portland Trail Blazers - Tom Hoover C 6'9'' 230 22 B C D+ B- B+ B
Leroy Ellis and overpaid geezers. Not a good position to be in. Nobody with any semblance of star quality is left. Hoover should be a solid player though. Not a great defender/shotblocker he should be a decent scorer and rebounder.
10. Phoenix Suns - Rod Thorn PG 6'4'' 195 22 B C- C+ B C A
They have Buckner and Bridges up front and York at sg so they will take a shot with Thorn, though it may be more of a hail mary. His notes are very uninspiring. He does look to have upside and fbb loves pgs so he could develop into something. Or not.
11. Washington Wizards (from Boston Celtics) - Leland Mitchell SG 6'4'' 210 22 C+ A- B- C+ C B
I would rather have Harge but he seems like Hogue's twin and I think that one of them is enough. Lots of guys in the league look like Mitchell at this point and going by ratings he looks worse than Adrian Smith who is wasting away on the Wizards bench (Wake up dc mod). He is however a very good offensive player and for that reason alone he is worth the pick.
12. Utah Jazz - Ira Harge C 6'9'' 225 22 B- C- D+ B B B
One word can be used to describe Harge – Solid. In fact, Spencer used this word three times in his notes. The Jazz could use a solid player at C, so he is a good fit.
13. Memphis Grizzlies (from Indiana Pacers) Freddie Crawford SG 6'4'' 189 22 B C+ B- B- C+ B
Glue guy #2 for the Grizz. I love this sort of players. Should be able to get minutes at the 1/2/3. Solid stats defender and pretty good rebounder. Does a lot of stuff well. Maybe Svedda will trade him to me.
