2027 GM Rankings
It’s raining now so it’s time for GM rankings. Rankings are based on:
1. Track record in this BBS (primarily)
2. Reputation (success in past BBS is considered)
3. Activity
Let’s get right to it:
Really, Really Bad:
29. Thugran (Memphis)
Oh wow is this guy bad. Talking trade with him is like talking to a wall and he definitely does not have a good grasp on value league wide. He hasn’t made any really bad trades yet, but that’s because he’s afraid to pull the trigger. Easy candidate for the CY once his team falls apart.
28. GAME (Golden State)
GAME’s a funny guy who adds something interesting to the league, but his franchise has been in horrible shape for a long, long time. Game’s cool but I never understand what he is saying and it annoys me that he thinks Neremiah Harrison is good. Hope he makes the CY when he inevitably faces it, though.
27. Biggie (Indiana)
Biggie has made a few good trades, but pretty much has done nothing with the Pacers in his stint here. He seems like a nice enough guy, just has never really proven to be more than a mediocre GM—a description that is probably kind.
26. Jeff (Boston)
When he was active, Jeff was no doubt a top 15 GM, but his lack of activity has made him a bottom-feeder and a ghost. He’s also the king of leading you on into thinking he’s interested in a deal and never doing it.
Unproven, Some Potential?
25. Styro (Lakers)
I really don’t know anything about Sytro. I forget which team he was before and I don’t think I’ve ever talked to him. Just know he’s been in and out of the league a lot.
24. Chipper (Spurs)
Chipper has been really bad in the past but I think he’s been pretty solid with the Spurs this time around. He’s a bit slow and tentative in trade talks, but no one can argue with his team’s success. Needs to learn how to make a middling team into a real contender.
Proven, but middle of the road:
23. JAH (Utah)
We’ve seen JAH have some great seasons in the last BBS, but he’s always been way too complacent with his teams and refuses to make trades. He was CY’d in his last stint and the Jazz really suck right now.
22. DJ (Toronto)
I know 22 is very low for DJ but he’s done almost nothing since his nice run in the beginning of the league. The Raptors make the playoffs a lot, but they do so as 40 game winners. Probably a top 15 GM but he’s been invisible lately, so he gets knocked because of that.
21. Greeme (Denver)
An active member and a good guy, Greeme just isn’t a very good GM. His team right now is in horrible position and in hard cap hell. And, aside from one or two really good teams, this is pretty normal for Greeme’s squads.
20. Pig (Phoenix)
When Pig wants to be good, I think he’s a top 10 Gm. He just loses interest a lot and really has not done much in this version of BBS. Right now, though, his Suns look like one of the West’s contenders.
19. Heatflash (Bobcats)
I think HF has actually done a decent job with Charlotte, I just remember him being absolutely horrible in the past. Maybe I’m thinking of someone else, but I’m pretty sure I am right here. Has not put together an elite team yet and didn’t surround Barker with enough pieces.
18. CC (Cleveland)
I think the last time I did these rankings CC was 29, so there’s progress! The Cavs have had some good teams lately and CC is always one of the more active members of BBS. Still, Cleveland is more often than not a middling team than a contender. I think the title was a fluke, but will be happy to see CC prove me wrong.
17. Martinez (Clippers)
Martinez has shown that he actually has a keen ability to build up teams into contenders, he just freaks out and screws them up just as quickly as he builds them up. He’s had some good luck with draft picks in this BBS, though, and has not been able to convert. Still has improved a lot though.
16. Greg (Mavs)
I wish Greg could be ranked “14.5” because that’s where he deserves to be—right in the middle. The Mavericks have always been an average team. Greg doesn’t do prototypical rebuilds, which I respect, but he hasn’t been able to take Dallas over the top. Good guy though.
15. Blue (76ers)
Blue has done nothing with Philly and has been really inactive, but he’s this high because I know he’s a good GM and has had a lot of success in the past (BBS 2). Could really move up this list if he picks up his activity.
14. Dan (Portland)
A good GM whose been in bad position for a while, Dan seems to have too many 6-7 season droughts where his team is just in horrible shape. He should be able to navigate his contract year with so many teams rebuilding, though.
13. John (Wizards)
John probably belongs in the unproven group, but his last stint as the Suns GM did prove that he could put together a really nice team. Still think I have him too high, but we’ll see if he proves me right.
Above Average:
12. Andy (Pistons)
The Pistons have been pretty bad in this version of the BBS with a 44% winning percentage, but they do have that one title. Andy is similar to Dan in that he’s gone through multi-year droughts where his team has almost no value on it, but I have seen Andy build a number of elite teams in the past.
11. Jordan (Rockets)
CJ has done a decent—albeit unmemorable—job with the Rockets and has always been one of the better GM’s in the league when active. I think he will be moving up this list now that his activity has picked up.
10. Repole (Magic)
The John Hollinger of BBS, Repole’s past failures probably indicate that he should not be so high on this list. However, he has made great progress with the Magic, who now look to be one of the league top contenders. He’s one of the few GM’s who rely on statistics, and I think it’s cool that he has a unique style of GM’ing.
Consistently Good:
9. Nova (Nets)
Nova has come back and proven why he deserves to be recognized as a top 10 GM. He was pretty horrible in the last BBS, but has had consistent success in this version. He’s active and built elite teams on more than once occasion.
8. Skillz (Knicks, me)
# 8! Danilo Gallinari! Anyway, the Knicks are # 3 all-time in regular season wins, have won 60+ games 6 times and 50+ games a pretty sick 18 times. Despite the two titles in the last BBS, the fact that the Knicks do not even have a finals appearance in this version is embarrassing considering the amount of opportunities they have had. I definitely admit to trading my team out of great situations.
7. Haberman (Thunder)
Habes is similar to me in that he has a trading complex, but his title creates a separation there. The Thunder went through quite a rough patch, but Habes was able to build a team up with no value into the best team in the league. Unfortunately, it looks like OKC might be going through a hard time now with the HC.
6. Outlawz (Hawks)
I’m keeping Outlawz out of the top 5 right now because he’s been really horrible with the Hawks. He did an awesome job with Orlando early on and has proven to build dynasties in the past BBS but he has been inactive and mediocre lately. Needs to do his usual thing and rebuild. A top 2-3 GM when he wants to be.
5.Aar (Hornets)
I’ve always thought aar was a very good GM and he’s proved that by building another nice team this year. Though he can be a bit odd in the way he values players, he has proven his ability to build good teams in a number of different ways. He also goes unnoticed as a GM who tends to trade in circles.
Elite
4.Insane (Miami)
I don’t really know that Insane is doing now, but I’m pretty sure those 4 titles are his with the Grizzlies. I don’t care who you are, 4 titles and 5 finals appearances are incredibly impressive and worthy of a top 5 spot.
3.DBW (Timberwolves)
The Wolves have reached the finals an unbelievable 7 times. Though DBW has only converted on two of those occasions, the Timberwolves were elite for a long time and will be for even longer with Wilt Chamberlain aboard.
2. Broph (Bucks)
One of the smarter GM’s in the league, Broph has had an excellent tenure as the Bucks GM. He’s built an elite club before, and is about to do it again with a front court of O’Mara and Alf. 3 for 3 in the finals is pretty sick, too.
1.Play (Bulls)
Results don’t lie and Play has had continued success in pretty much every sim he’s ever been in. He’s maybe the worst person to deal with in the league and seems to have the same formula for success, but it works. The Bulls are consistently elite, and despite rebuilding every so often, they have the best regular season record of all-time in addition to their 4 titles.
