Here is a list of the Top 5 Most Overpaid Players in the league right now. The list is based on my opinion. Feedback is always welcome. You decide who is overpaid or not. Here is my list:
#5: Kenny Carmichael PF 29 6'10'' 230 C+ C- C- A- B C
$13,185,900 $14,127,750
Total = $27,313,650
Who killed Kenny? 6 years ago, Kenny Carmichael was known as a beast shotblocker and rebounder while playing for the Orlando Magic. After playing four seasons with Orlando, he was resigned to a long term contract and then traded to the Dallas Mavericks.
Everything went bad from there.
Kenny was not the same player at all. He was not averaging over 3 blocks a game anymore and his rebounds were down. His minutes went down as well and after playing a full season with the Mavs, he was traded to the Suns. But Kenny got worse. His game started declining. It was as if he didn't care anymore and his heart wasn't in basketball. But his contract was so long and so much that there was no way to move him for value anymore. He was just a contract waiting to expire. Phoenix had hoped to see Kenny get back to regular form, but it wasn't going to happen. His minutes went from 30 to 20 a game with Phoenix and after a full season with the team, he was traded again, this time to the Washington Wizards. But things got even worse for him then. In 2024, Kenny played only 37 games while averaging 11 minutes. The following year, he started to show some light when he averaged 10 rebounds and 2 blocks in 29 minutes. However, his game wouldn't last as he only played 41 games that season. Now in year nine and still have two years remaining in his contract, questions still ask, "Who killed Kenny?". It's pretty sad how his career has ended up, knowing how he was once a defensive/rebounding stud. Sorry Kenny, but you are overpaid.
#4: Franz Reinhart C 26 7'0'' 237 B- B C B+ A- C
$16,500,000 $18,000,000 $19,500,000 $21,000,000
Total = $75,000,000
The former #5 overall pick in 2019 entered the league as a top young prospect who can shoot outside for his size, play d, and rebound. Playing with the Hawks throughout his career, Franz best season came through in 2022 when he averaged 20/11. However, the rest of his game was mediocre. He couldn't score inside or block shots. Most of his points came from outside when he shot 40% and I think he relied on his outside shot a bit too much. After having his best season, he entered FA when he received the full max from the Hawks. The signing was understandable since centers like Franz were rare to find in the league and Hawks GM had no choice to lock him up. Franz also had some potential and perhaps the next season he would become even better. But nah. Since being paid the full max, Franz has not been the same player like he was the year before. His ratings went down the next year and his production had dropped. He averaged 18 ppg (2 less than his previous year) and his rebounding had dropped as well. Then the next couple years after that, he averaged 16 ppg and 8 rpg. It was not looking good for Franz and it was becoming obvious his production was not matching his max contract. So far this season, Franz is averaging a career low 13 ppg. He has four years left remaining in his deal while making 75 million. His production regressing + the money he makes right now = overpaid.
#3: Amir Otemzel SF 29 6'6'' 235 B- B- C- A+ C C
$11,979,000 $13,176,900 $14,400,000 $15,300,000
Total = $54,855,900
Selected #15 overall by Toronto in 2019, Amir was a stud rookie who averaged 18 ppg, 5 boards, and 3 assists. He looked like a young rising star entering the league. People liked him. But during his sophomore year, Amir began to decline. He averaged 15 ppg and the next year he averaged below 9. I'm not sure what happened to Amir. Questions asked whether if he still had potential to get back to where he was when he first started, but Toronto decided to let him walk in FA and see how much he was worth. When FA started, it was the best time of Amir's life. He was signed to a long term deal by the Oklahoma City Thunder. The league was scratching their heads at the signing, except for Thunder GM, Aaron Haberman who was satisfield at the signing during the time. However, it was the same day Aaron was drunked when he signed Amir. Now the league knew why Amir was signed to a long term deal. It was a huge mistake by Aaron but thankfully he got rid of his contract by trading him to the Knicks two years later. But no matter where Amir went, he got worse. He never got back to averaging 18 ppg and his game became one dimensional. He was a wing defender making max money. Currently playing for the Clippers and making 54 million over four years, he is averaging 19 minutes per game, 5 ppg, and a steal per game. You sir are OVERPAID.
#2: Ryan Miller C 30 6'11'' 253 B- C B- A A- D
$18,720,000 $20,160,000 $21,600,000
Total = $60,480,000
Selected #9 overall in the 2015 Draft, Miller was thought to be a bust earlier in his career. However, 5 seasons in, he started showing promise that he was a double double guy and a great passer for his position. Miller's success came through during his tenure with the LA Lakers when he averaged 13/12 and 4 assists. He played four seasons with the Lakers, but when his contract expired, he was signed by the New Jersey Nets to a max deal, which was a big mistake. Questions were floating around the league, asking if he was worth the money, but he wasn't. Even Commissioner Spencer Martin thought he was overpaid after he was signed. Although Miller played very well with the LA Lakers, he wasn't a difference maker. He wasn't someone who would suddenly turn your team around. Sure big's are hard to find in the league and Miller had nice ratings, but his game hasn't changed since he left the Lakers and his ratings are still the same. He just never had a passion for the game at all. Now just making over 60 million and not over 100 million, Miller will always be known to be one of the most overpaid players in the league. The Nets were lucky to get rid of him after they signed him.
AND........
wait for it..... wait for it...
#1: Andre Drummond C 31 6'10'' 251 B+ D C A- A C
$19,500,000 $21,450,000 $23,400,000 $25,350,000 $27,300,000 $29,250,000
Total = $146,250,000
The former #5 overall pick in 2015 has been a very productive big in BBS. He has career averages of 11 pts, 12 boards, and 4 blocks through 11 seasons in the league. He has been fairly paid over the last 10 years, up until this past offseason when he was resigned to a fat ass contract by the Indiana Pacers, who then was traded to the San Antonio Spurs for Durell Valentine. Looking at his ratings, you would think he would become a 20/10 guy by now, but he is still averaging way below that. To me, AD is a guy who bangs in the post, grabs an offensive rebound, and puts back shots, while at the other end he would block a ton of shots and play great defense. However, his game is not worth 146 million over 6 years lol. His contract would MAYBE make sense if AD was a 20/10 guy, but he isn't one and will never become one, especially at age 31. Also he can't shoot a free throw to save his life. $146,250,000 over 6 years in your 30's? MOST OVERPAID PLAYER IN BBS.
Just missed the Top 5:
Jordan Price SG 31 6'6'' 218 A- C+ C A- C+ D
$20,160,000 $21,840,000 $23,520,000 $25,200,000
Total = $90,720,000
He isn't in my top 5 because Price is still a very good scorer. His production is better than the guys above him. However, the negatives I would say about him HAD he made my top 5 is that he isn't worth THAT much money no matter how good he is. Also his turnover's are disgusting for a wing. I would probably put up #6 on my list. Hell, might as well title this "BBS Top 6 Most Overpaid Players."
