You do not need to understand advanced basketball stats to be a good GM. In FBB? No. In real life? Yes. No. Advanced stats are another way to evaluate talent to sell a player to a larger group of people that don't have an eye for talent. I know some GMs rely on these heavily but they are not necessary to properly evaluate talent. Can advanced stats predict how two players will or won't work together?

Can advanced stats predict how two players will or won't work together? well, yeah. there are analytics for all kinds of situational play. PPP on pick and roll, in transition, at given paces, with similar players on the floor.

^bingo.
Very few people are aware of how indepth some advanced stats go, stuff like PER and oRtg are just tip of the iceberg, very general stats. There's a lot of work with 5 man units, what types of player styles mesh together, etc. Pretty much everyone in the statistical know was aware that LeBron and Wade weren't going to be a perfect fit, there's tons of data that suggests having two high volume guys who need the ball in their hands isn't really all that beneficial.
