2021 Potential Free Agents: It's Raining Large Men
The Centers...
Evan Dickerson
Current Team: San Antonio Spurs
Age: 22
Ratings: A- C D+ A- B+ A
Statistics: 33.6 MPG, 17.5 PPG, 11.5 RPG, 1 SPG, 3.9 BPG
Even Dickerson is, in my opinion, the ultimate prize of this potential free agency class. The combination of position (center/power forward, a position that EVERYONE needs and wants), a young age (22), sick ratings (A- A- B+ in all important big categories, as well as A scouted to top it off), and sick numbers (nearly 18 points a game to go along with just under 12 rebounds and 4 blocks a game) were all considered in this opinion. While Hall is practically as good, the C outside that Dickerson sports puts him over Hall rather easily. MAX MAX MAX.
George Hall
Current Team: New Orleans Hornets
Age: 25
Ratings: A- F D+ B+ A- B
Statistics: 33.6 MPG, 19.2 PPG, 12.7 RPG, 1.3 SPG, 3.6 BPG
I didn’t think Hall would ever be this good with that truly hideous F outside rating but boy was a wrong. Hall was a force his rookie year and is even better overall now. The 24 year old center out of Western University is good for 19 points, nearly 13 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 3.6 blocks a game. The 19 points are especially sick for a guy that literally cannot shoot. One of the prizes of this free agency class should he decide to test the open market. Definitely worth a max.
Andre Hixon
Current Team: Chicago Bulls
Age: 23
Ratings: A- D+ D+ A- B B
Statistics: 30.3 MPG, 18.9 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 1.7 BPG
Hixon is one of the possible prizes of this upcoming free agency period. The 23 year old big out of Tennessee Tech has emerged as a name player in his first season as a starter. In just 30 minutes a game, Hixon is good for nearly 19 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks a game. To go along with raw production, Hixon is an efficient shooter from the field and he’s also a pretty good free throw shooter for a big man. Look for the Bulls to do everything in their power to retain him.
Dwight Howard
Current Team: Indiana Pacers
Age: 33
Ratings: B+ C- C- A A D
Statistics: 36.5 MPG, 13.6 PPG, 14.1 RPG, 1.9 SPG, 3.1 BPG
The Pacers were able to acquire Dwight Howard by parting with Andre Hixon. While it hurts, the deal wasn’t as disastrous as it seemed as Dwight Howard is still putting in work at age 33. Averaging nearly 14 points to go along with 14 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 blocks, Dwight Howard is probably the leading defensive player of the year candidate. Howard’s role in our being able to call the Pacers a good team for the first time in forever is huge.
Serge Ibaka
Current Team: Washington Wizards
Age: 30
Ratings: B C- F+ A A D
Statistics: 34.5 MPG, 13.4 PPG, 12.9 RPG, 3 BPG
Ibaka is averaging nearly a whole block more than last year while also cutting down a bit on turnovers. You can practically pencil him in for a double-double every night with his 13.4 point and 12.9 rebound averages. Throw in the B inside, A defense and A rebounding and you have a big that will receive offers from every team should he decide to test FA.
Gus Gilchrist
Current Team: New Jersey Nets
Age: 28
Ratings: B- C D- A- B+ B
Statistics: 31.2 MPG, 9.7 PPG, 9.9 RPG
Once again Gilchrist finds himself as a potential free agent. His inability to net a multi-year deal is likely due to his inability to block any shots, but that is not to say that Gilchrist is not a serviceable player. In 31 minutes of play this year, Gilchrist basically averages 10 and 10. He’s probably not a starter on a championship level team, but he would be a nice role playing big for any team.
Greg Monroe
Current Team: Chicago Bulls
Age: 29
Ratings: B C- C+ B+ A- C
Statistics: 24.4 MPG, 7.7 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 1.4 BPG
Monroe is another big that isn’t a world beater but can still be a very useful piece on a good team. In 40 games this season, Monroe averages nearly 8 points and 8 rebounds in a little over 24 minutes of play. Not too shabby. Monroe is definitely good for a ton of MLE type offers should he decide to test FA.
Andrew Bogut
Current Team: Dallas Mavericks
Age: 34
Ratings: B C D A- C+ D
Statistics: 23.7 MPG, 9.6 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 2.5 BPG
His ratings have been steadily declining and yet he still continues to impress with his services. Nearly 10 points a game to go along with 6 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in just 24 minutes? Definitely still a big time big man at age 34. Should he test the market, expect him to receive MLE like offers from every good team in the league.
Martynas Andriuskevicius
Current Team: Denver Nuggets
Age: 33
Ratings: B- C C C+ A D
Statistics: 33.5 MPG, 11.2 PPG, 12.2 RPG, 1.7 SPG, 2.3 BPG
As good as Martynas has been in his career, he’s also flown a bit under the radar. His ratings right now are rather underwhelming to say the least, but he’s never had truly beast ratings and still managed to dominate when he was in his prime. Now as an old head, Martynas is proving that all things considered, he’s still a stud. 11 points, 12 rebounds, to go along with nearly 2 steals and 2 blocks are very impressive numbers.
Joakim Noah
Current Team: Memphis Grizzlies
Age: 34
Ratings: C+ C C B+ A D
Statistics: 31.2 MPG, 10.5 PPG, 11.3 RPG
Joakim Noah continues to receive large 1-year offers from the Memphis Grizzlies as he plays an important role as 6th man. Averaging 11 points and 11 rebounds in 31 minutes a game, the Grizzlies cannot afford to let Noah go as his rebounding plays a significant part in their dominance over the last couple of seasons. Noah is getting pretty old as he is 34, and should the Grizzlies decide that they want to go out and acquire a younger 6th man, Noah should receive a ton of offers.
John Henson
Current Team: Memphis Grizzlies
Age: 28
Ratings: B+ C- D B B C
Statistics: 29.6 MPG, 10.3 PPG, 9 RPG, 1.5 BPG
Although he’s been a bench player for the majority of his career, Henson has been highly coveted throughout the years as he not only developed great ratings, but also produced decent numbers in limited minutes. Now in his first real starting gig, Henson hasn’t disappointed with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks a game. He isn’t a game changing type of big, but he’s solid and won’t fuck a game up for you.
Amare Stoudemire
Current Team: Los Angeles Lakers
Age: 36
Ratings: B+ C- C- B+ B- F
Statistics: 28.8 MPG, 10.7 PPG, 8 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 3.1 BPG
Pretty incredible how much of a baller this guy is a 36 year olds. Then again, when you’ve been a true stud like Amare throughout your entire career, chances are you are going to be a valuable player until the day you retire. Amare’s value comes in his ability to rack up points and blocks in limited minutes. 10.7 points to go along with 3.1 blocks in 29 minutes a game? Well damn. He’ll probably retire in the off-season, but if not, this guy is a game changer off the bench for any decent to good team.
Hank Norel
Current Team: Portland Trailblazers
Age: 32
Ratings: B D+ C- B+ A- C
Statistics: 30.1 MPG, 15.9 PPG, 10.1 RPG
Norel is another one of those bigs that can score and rebound but can’t block. Unfortunately for Norel, if you’re a non-shot blocking big man in BBS, you aren’t valued very much. That’s not to say that Norel isn’t a useful player though. I mean with ratings like his to go along with 16 points and 10 rebounds, he is certainly worthy of receiving a bunch of MLE offers.
The Power Forwards...
LaMarcus Aldridge
Current Team: Cleveland Cavaliers
Age: 34
Ratings: A- B- D+ A- B+ C
Statistics: 37.4 MPG, 22.5 PPG, 12.7 RPG, 1.4 BPG
Aldridge has flown under the radar for the majority of his career. But it's easy to see how that could be possible when you consider he wasn't truly good until his 10th season or so. Still this 34 year old can do a little bit of everything and can probably come at a steal of a price too.
Josh Smith
Current Team: Oklahoma City Thunder
Age: 33
Ratings: B C+ C- A- B+ C
Statistics: 34.5 MPG, 14.6 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 3.2 BPG
Smith has been blocking shots into the 3rd row since his sophomore year and the game don’t change in spite of him being 33 now. In just under 35 minutes a game, the multiple time all-defensive team member averages 15 points go along with 10 rebounds and 3 blocks a game. Great numbers, though certainly not worth the 25 mil he’s raking in this year. Damn.
Dez Ford
Current Team: Miami Heat
Age: 23
Ratings: B C- D B B+ B
Statistics: 21.2 MPG, 10.3 PPG, 6.4 RPG
Dez is a young big that still has not managed to break out of his shell. Yes that’s right. This kid practically sports the same ratings he did in his rookie year. I figured he was at least worth the mention since he does produce nicely in limited minutes. There is also that chance, although very slim, that he actually breaks out of his shell. Like a late bloomer or something like that. Anyway, he’s worth a look if he’s available.
DeJuan Blair
Current Team: Detroit Pistons
Age: 30
Ratings: B D+ D+ C+ A- D
Statistics: 30.7 MPG, 15.1 PPG, 11.1 RPG
Blair is very similar to Hank Norel. Scores and rebounds and a nice clip and does so without a very large amount of minutes. In just over 30 minutes per game, Blair averages 15 points and 11 boards. Solid numbers. I’m not sure his rebounding numbers make up for his lack of defense however. Not only does he fail to man up, but he also can’t block or steal. Obviously still worth a look but probably as a bench player rather than a starter.
Patric Young
Current Team: San Antonio Spurs
Age: 28
Ratings: B- D+ D+ A- A- D
Statistics: 31.2 MPG, 7.9 PPG, 9.9 RPG
Kinda meh. Decent ratings, particularly in the defense and rebounding department, but he can’t steal the ball or block shots which hurts his value. He’ll still get some looks just because he’s a big that can rebound decently (nearly 10 boards in 31 minutes per game), but he’s definitely just a bench player type.
Honorable Mentions: Li Guo Wang of the Atlanta Hawks doesn’t get any burn but he could a sick scorer off the bench for a team.. Sean Williams of the Milwaukee Bucks is nothing special ratings wise, but his ability to block a lot of shots and rebound in limited minutes will certainly be sought after. Ronny Turiaf (Golden State Warriors) still has it, grabbing 6.3 boards and blocking nearly 2 shots a game in just 22 minutes.
