Assaf Schayes
Age: 22
Small Forward
6'8"
210 lbs.
Yeshiva University
Rookie Ratings:
B- B B B B- ??
Overall:
Born to be a basketball player. His father and grandfather played in the NBA. His mother was on the Israeli national team. Has been called the best Jewish basketball player of all time. The funny thing is that he didn't start playing competitive basketball until high school and until then was known as the next Sandy Koufax. He even pitched for the Mets double A team last year. Basketball wasn't the only thing that Assaf discovered in high school, he also found religion. He decided to take pass on all the top 20 schools that recruited him and decided to go to Yeshiva University. He was mostly untested against major college competition but on Fri. afternoons he would go down to the NY playgrounds and held his own against college and the occasional BBS players. He was one of the surprises of the predraft camps and even won MVP at one of the camps. He originally chose baseball over basketball because it would be easier for him not to play on Sat. but he received permission to play on Sat as long as he doesn't talk to reporters and walks to the arena. He played all 5 positions at Yeshiva University and learned how to play everyone. In BBS he will be to short to play C, not quick enough to play pg and might not be strong enough to play pf. His best position will probably be sf but he might be able to play sg or even pf.
Breakdown:
IN - Can finish around the hoop with either hand. Uses the backboard very well. Can shoot around bigger players. Not very strong, not very quick but he manages to get his shot off against bigger, stronger players.
OUT – Great foul shooter. A master at getting to the line. Struggles from three point range and rarely shoots from there.
HN – A coach on the floor. Great vision. Very good passer. Doesn't hold on to the ball too long. Not a great dribbler. Not extremely quick. Doesn't turn the ball over much.
DEF – Extremely quick hands. Great position defender. Can't block shots. Gets overpowered at pf.
REB - Excellent rebounder for a sf. Boxes out well. Not a great jumper but with an innate awareness of where the ball will go. Must be the genes. .
POT – There are two schools of thought regarding his potential. One group of scouts has him at a "B" potential arguing his age and that even if he didn't play competitive basketball until high school his father and grandfather must have shown him a trick or two. The other group has him at an "A" potential arguing that he is still getting used to playing with top players and opponent and experience will lead to improvement. His scouted potential at the draft will be "C" and will only be updated after his first tc.
