Basically we're just arguing a bunch of what-if's. I could play this game all day.
Rich Rod may not have been Michigan's top choice, but he was definitely very high on their list. He didn't even coach the bowl game if I remember right? I mean I don't think Michigan was in that much of a hurry to land a coach? Didn't he almost leave a year or two before he went to Michigan as well? In my opinion his goal was to coach at a prestigious college football school, not stay and build up WVU to that level.

Would WVU not be at that level after winning a national championship?

Rich talked with Alabama a year before he left for Michigan. He had been promised basically everything he wanted at WVU when Michigan came calling. Some of the promises weren't being fulfilled which caused the problems with the administration. He DID NOT want to leave but how it was handled on both sides it was the only option in his eyes to leave.
He would have always looked at the bigger named more prestigious schools, but I don't think he would have ever left (at least not for a few years) after he turned down Michigan.

One NC doesn't put WVU on the historic level of Alabama, Michigan, USC, etc. I think that's the type of job his ego was looking for. Maybe he would have stayed, maybe he would have left. I think it's really impossible to say. Regardless of how things were handled the fact that he was even considering jobs from these schools says that at the very minimum he was thinking of bolting.

In 2007, it looked like the only major job opening up in the next 5 years would be Penn St upon Joe Pa retiring/dying. About every other program had a coach locked up long term. Obviously Notre Dame is likely going to be open but no one saw them being this terrible 3 years in a row. If Rich would have been at WVU 3 or 4 more years I think it would have been hard for him to of ever left

Not that it really matters, but man it bothers me when people use "of" instead of "have."
