2013 BBS Mock Draft!
1. Los Angeles Clippers: Fab Melo C 7'0'' 274 21 B D D B B- A:
I have Fab Melo number one on my big board because of Austin Rivers’ potential handling issues. I don’t want to risk the number one pick on a PG who might have to play SG. What was the name of that PG I had last BBS? Jamal Jenkins? He became a nasty scorer but never got over his TOs and it hurt him so much in the long run. Melo’s only knock is his lack of shotblocking. Sucks, but oh well. I’ll take a big who doesn’t block many shots over a PG who might be a TO-whore. The Clippers already have Irving from last year so Melo is an easy choice.
2. Philadelphia 76ers: Austin Rivers PG 6’4” 175 C+ B C+ B C- A:
Rivers could be completely nasty. Great scorer, very good defender. Probably should pass well too. I’m just too worried about his potential handling issues as a PG to rank him above Fab Melo. Who knows, maybe he pans out and turns out to be the best player in the draft. That wouldn’t be surprising at all. I still would not want to risk it when there is another legitimate option. The Sixers have Wayns but I’m giving them Rivers anyway. Just make a trade and take the 2nd best player available.
3. Houston Rockets: Jonas Valanciunas C 6’11” 260 B C+ C B- B- A:
Valanciunas is going to be a great scorer and clearly a top-3 player in this draft. He is neither a shot blocker nor an athlete. Does this mean his potential is limited? No idea, maybe. I’d take him 3rd but wouldn’t draft him above Melo or Rivers. Rockets go BPA.
4. Atlanta Hawks: Quincy Miller PF 6'10'' 225 20 B C B+ C C+ A:
[/b]Miller has an extremely unique skillset and is 4th on my big board. I’m worried that too much of his B inside grade comes from his jumping. I also don’t think that passing big men with average d/rebound work out in FBB nearly as well as they could. However, this draft is filled with flawed players and Miller could be a beast. The Hawks need some talent and he is BPA.
5. Los Angeles Lakers: Durand Scott SG 6'3'' 195 22 B- C+ C B- C A:
[/b]Potential TO issues are the only knock on Scott. I like his notes a lot overall. He’s a little light but it’ll be fine once he gets weight roomed a few times. He should be a good player all-around and might have some potential. Nanz will probably jump to 1 and take Fab Melo though.
6. Los Angeles Clippers: John Jenkins SG 6'5'' 190 21 C A- C- B- D A:
[/b]I’m so torn on this guy. He is probably the fourth overall pick if there weren’t issues with his handle. As is, I’m not entirely sure how to rank him. I really doubt he’ll do more than 3 TPG as a SG initially. That can be comped into an easier-to-stomach 2.5 which really is fine if he develops as a #1 option and plus-defender. I’m going to rank him on the assumption that his TOs aren’t going to be completely crippling. Martinez is also in a position to take a shot on a potential stud with his second lottery pick.
7. Toronto Raptors: Tyler Honeycutt SF 6'8'' 200 23 B- B- C- C+ C A:
What kills Honeycutt is the fact that he is 23. If he was 20 I think he’d be an easy choice at #4 overall. He’s going to be a #2 option worst case in BBS. While Spence critized his defense, C+ really isn’t that bad and can get to ‘B’ with some comps. I really doubt he has superstar potential though so he slips as a result. Could be a good pairing with KD.
8. Dallas Mavericks (From Indiana Pacers): Dalton Pepper SG 6'5'' 215 22 B C+ C B- C- A:
Pepper has very good notes. His one knock is that he is a bad passer which isn’t a huge deal to me. I think he’s going to develop into a legitimate starter based on these notes. His potential (unknown based on Spence’s notes) can obviously change things but he looks very solid. They already have Leslie but I think he is BPA here and they grab a PG at 9.
9. Dallas Mavericks: Quinn Cook PG 5'11'' 155 20 C C B+ B+ D+ A:
He’s going to have crazy good A:TO ratios. Also is going to be a serious defender. If he can get his scoring to B-/B- he’ll be a player. Interesting player. I might have him ranked a bit higher than someone else on my big board because I think an efficient PG is a big asset even if his scoring is kind of weak. Worst case he is an amazing backup PG. I have him behind DJ Richardson on my big board but it makes more sense for Greg to take a true PG.
10. Washington Wizards: Mouphtaou Yarou PF 6'9'' 240 22 C+ D D- B+ B- A:
Yarou might be my favorite player in this entire draft. It’s unfortunate that he doesn’t get blocks or steals because he will (rightfully) fall down in the lotto as a result. However, he will turn into a completely lock down man defender if he is as good as his notes suggest. I want to see how this type of player plays out in FBB. A nasty defensive big man who can rebound will turn out to have more value down the line than some of these other players GM’s want to take in front of him. The Wizards already have Rondo/Bullock so I go Yarou here even though D.J. Richardson is ahead of him on my big board.
11. Charlotte Bobcats: D.J. Richardson SG 6'3'' 200 22 C+ B- C B+ C- B:
[/b] Someone is going to be very happy with this player. Spence said Richardson is maxed out on defense (man, perimeter, etc) not counting blocks/steals. That is pretty crazy. If an active GM got a hold of Richardson and put 6 RCs/ACs into his offense he can become a stud. Also might be able to play some PG according to notes. I hope he goes to the right GM. Hype has a very good young core so can go BPA here. He also could consider Tobias Harris.
12. San Antonio Spurs: Tobias Harris PF 6'10'' 234 21 B C C C+ B- A:
[/b]I like that Harris isn’t a good athlete. His B inside should be more legitimate as a result. He isn’t a defensive liability but he also won’t block any shots. He should be a starter in BBS but far from a franchise player. After winning the title last year following a 12 game winning streak, JAH is in the market for a good big man prospect to pair with Martynas.
13. Denver Nuggets (From Cleveland Cavaliers): Jordan Price SF 6'6'' 215 18 A- C C B- C+ B:
[/b]Spence referenced Desmond Mason. Does anyone remember how great Desmond Mason was in a previous version of BBS? Price might have limited upside but at 18 it looks like his offense is already there and you have years to comp up his flaws. I think this guy is going to turn into a real player in BBS. Worst case a career starter. My favorite player in the entire class.
14. Chicago Bulls: Karron Johnson SF 6'7'' 220 22 B- B- C- C+ C+ B:
[/b]Karron Johnson! This guy was nasty last league. Looks very well-rounded and should be a starter at SF. Really like his ratings and the fact that he has been great in BBS before. He’s going to be worth having. Play doesn’t really have a hole in his core so he goes BPA here.
15. New Orleans Hornets: Rodney Williams SF 6'7'' 200 21 C+ C+ C- B- C A:
[/b]It looks like this guy is extremely hit-or-miss. Right now he is raw as hell and his value is based off of potential. I don’t get the impression that his upside is superstar-level so I wouldn’t want to risk my pick on a guy so likely to be average. Give me a surer thing in my boy Jordan Price. That said, A potential is still A potential and I’d rather take the risk on him rather than someone like Patric Young who looks like a career backup.
16. Orlando Magic: Patric Young PF 6'9'' 240 22 B D+ C- B+ B+ B:
[/b]He is an interesting player because he can come in and play a role right away. I don’t see much hope in that inside grade since Spence notes his great strength and lack of post moves. Regardless, I’d rather take a guaranteed rotation piece (at worst) like Young rather than gamble on someone’s A potential like Mason Plumlee).
17. Minnesota Timberwolves (From Portland Trail Blazers):
[/b]Mason Plumlee PF 6'11'' 223 22 C+ C+ C- B- B- A: Plumlee looks extremely versatile. I bet he would be a really great rotation piece as a backup 4/5 (and maybe even backup 3 with an RC to his handle) on an outside shooting team. However, his notes reference being a backup due to his lack of shotblocking. If that’s his realistic role in BBS then I’d take Patric Young over him whom we already know can pan out to a B/B+/B+ big man (worst case).
18. Milwaukee Bucks: Adreian Payne C 6'10'' 235 21 C+ D D B B B:
[/b]Payne looks like a mid-late first rounder. He doesn’t block shots but he’s got B/B defensive/rebounding ratings and should turn into a solid backup big during his rookie contract for Broph.
19. Houston Rockets (From New York Knicks) Dominic Cheek SG 6'6'' 185 21 C+ B- C- B C- B:
[/b]He looks like a good player but nothing special at the moment and nothing that looks like it can be AC’d/RC’d into something special (like D.J. Richardson). Solid overall but I would only take him once certain guys with more defined roles or potential are gone.
20. Miami Heat: Dante Taylor SF 6'8'' 215 22 B- D+ D B B- B:
[/b]I’m not a huge fan of Taylor. He doesn’t really have the size to play PF but his handle is atrocious for SF. Spence noted his best attribute is offensive rebounding. That’s pretty cool but I worry too much about his size/handle. B-/B/B- starting ratings aren’t bad though. He needs to be weight roomed pretty hard to get PF weight. I’m coming around on him as I type. Spence says he’s strong. On second though, this guy is definitely a PF at 230. Could be a good add for the Heat’s core late in the draft.
21. Atlants Hawks (From Detroit Pistons) Hollis Thompson SF 6'7'' 210 22 C+ B+ C- C- C+ B:
[/b]I bet this guy becomes a very good scorer to make up for his defense but wow. C- starting defense? Weak. I wouldn’t want to draft this guy with any semblance of a high pick. He has the skillset of an LLE. Maybe he has potential and becomes a dominant scorer ala Xavier Henry last BBS but I really doubt it.
22. Philadelphia 76ers (From Oklahoma City Thunder) Delvon Roe SF 6'7'' 220 23 C+ C+ C- B+ C B:
[/b]Limited upside but an all-around game. I think he’ll turn into a solid backup but not much more than that. He’s coming into the league with a legitimate tool though (defense) so he has a little value.
23. Toronto Raptors (From Boston Celtics): Aziz N’Diaye C 7'0'' 240 24 C D D- B+ C C:
[/b]So many of these prospects are flawed that it wouldn’t surprise me to see someone reach on him around 16/17 just to guarantee a cheap shot blocker during his rookie deal. DJ gets him at 23.
24: Los Angeles Lakers (From New Jersey Nets) Dexter Strickland PG 6'3'' 185 22 B- C+ C+ C+ D+ B:
[/b]Everything checks out on Strickland other than his potential. Pretty good scorer, pretty good distributor, pretty good defense. I wouldn’t expect much out of him though.
25. Philadelphia 76ers (From Denver Nuggets) Dane Miller SF 6'7'' 210 22 C+ C C- A- C B:
[/b]The kind of player good teams have on their bench for a million or less. Versatile defender at 3 positions who might block a shot/game. That’s got a lot of value to me at SF or especially SG. Still, his offense is clearly weak so he gets bumped accordingly.
26. Los Angeles Clippers (From Memphis Grizzlies) LeBryan Nash SF 6'8'' 220 19 B C C C C A:
[/b]Nash looks like a pure athlete first and a basketball player second. I really doubt that plays too well (or progresses well in TC) in BBS. Not a fan of this guy. I think his B inside is hollow because of his athleticism. Martinez takes a shot on A potential late but I’d be really surprised if this guy doesn’t suck.
27. Utah Jazz: Tomas Satoransky SG 6’6” 190 20 B- B- B- C C C:
[/b] Satoransky does not come with notes. However, he comes into BBS with backup-ready scoring and interesting handle. Maybe he is a PG. Not a bad gamble.
28. Miami Heat (From Minnesota Timberwolves) D.J. Cooper PG 5'11'' 165 23 C C+ B C+ C- B:
[/b] Eh, not very good. He’s going to get a lot of assists but his TOs will even it out. It looks like he has limited potential and as a result won’t become a great scorer. Career backup in BBS.
29. Dallas Mavericks (From Phoenix Suns) Matthew Dellavedova PG 6'4'' 185 23 C B+ B- C D+ C:
[/b]The end of this draft is weak. I’ll put him behind DJ Cooper because Cooper came with notes. At least it looks like Dellavedova is going to be a shooter with solid handle.
