Marty is the gm i most enjoy trolling bc he almost always takes the bite. His desire to be close to Play drove him East and now he is trying to build the Cavs into a winner.
Your team is currently 10-17 but the bottom of the East is horrible. Are you going to try and make the playoffs this year? If so, why – wouldn't you be better off adding another good pick? If not, why trade for Webb since he will mess up your pick
Martinez - I think my weaknesses are clear. I need more blocks, and I need better depth. I should be able to squander a deal for depth and/or blocks as the trade deadline nears with people who are tanking more willing to give up guys for cheaper. As for being better off adding another good pick, well had you actually studied my team before proposing this question you would know I no longer own my pick this season due to the World B. Free trade for Jo Jo White, so tanking this year really isn't an option.
Why did you add Rich Kelly as a throw in your deal with Repole? I might just be overrating him but he looks like a player?
Martinez - He looks like a player but he's only played in a whole 10 games for you? and I don't think that's due to injuries, so yes, I think you are clearly overrating him. (ed note - check back at the end of the year).
Are you disappointed with JO JO or is that the production that you expected?
Martinez - What more could one ask for? 20ppg, 2spg, efficient with 47%FG, 85% FT, I mean would I have loved for him to be giving me over 40+ppg with those same percentages? Sure, but he's still an upgrade over World B. for me this year anyways. Lower TOs, more rebounds, etc. I really can't ask for much more than that as a second option really.
Who is the most valuable player on your team (not to your team but rather in terms of trade value)?
Martinez - I think this one is pretty easy. I think it's Adrian Dantley just based on contract, ratings, and production. People are all tlaking about how he's had two mediocre DCs but he's one of the most efficent players in the league right now and he's still just 21. Tack on the fact that he hasn't even been AC'd once, yeah I'd say he's easily the most valuable player on the team, if not one of the most valuable players in the entire league right now.
give me 3 reasons why you are a better gm than Greeme (and don't reference things that happened 30 years ago)?
Martinez - Do we really need to do this again? I mean, sure Greeme's had a better overall regular season record that I have, but I've historically have had much better teams than he has. Do I "tank longer" than greeme does? Sure, but that's why I build 50-60 win teams and don't have consecutive 40-45 win teams that barely make playoffs as 6th, 7th, 8th seed etc. I mean, the historical performance is there. You've been to playoffs and finals more than I have yay great fantastic but you also never made the finals when I was in the West. You also have yet to win a championship so yeah facts are facts. I don't make any of this stuff up. (ed note - i actually did make the finals when Marty was in the West and then got swept by Play. Of course i didn't have Dickerson who had just outplayed a few great pgs but i digress).
Dumbest trade offer you received this year?
Martinez - Adrian Dantley, Norm Nixon, cle 51+52 and that pick you just forfeited(which was a 1st rounder #26 or so) for Lloyd Neal. (ed note - hype has shown up in most of the dumbest trade offers questions)
Look back at the draft, where should Norm Nixon have been drafted? Looking back do you think that you should have picked somebody else?
Martinez- I think he's fine where he was drafted for my needs he's exactly what I needed. Is Mike Glenn the better PG right now? I mean sure, but Repole I'm sure has dumped +19 if not more into him already, Nixon had a nice TC, has a few RCs, and has one AC to his Handles. If I dump into his scorring ratings he will be a great PG one day. Mike Glenn is also benefiting from an obviously bad tankig Orlando Magic team right now. I'm satisfied with the pick and I think he'll be better than Mike D'Antoni ever was, easily.
Broph or Habes?
Martinez - Habes. Me and him get into it but we both do it to each other in fun, no homo. Broph on the other hand seems to go out of his way to start arguements about irrelevant things just to prove he's right about an arguement like anyone really cares. Like the other day he's arguing to me that Serge Ibaka really doesn't represent Spain because he lived in the Congo for majority of his life and because his nickname is "Air Congo" which is by far the most idiotic thing I ever heard of. He has a home in Barcelona Spain. In many interviews he's talked about many times how he feels Spanish, how he owes everything in his life to Spain who helped him achieve his goals and yet Broph shrugged this all off simply saying "well he's not going to say Spain sucks."
Well of course he's not going to say Spain sucks, considering he LIVES there in the off-seasons. Ridiculous to me how he can compare Serge Ibaka to a Chris Kaman situation, when Kaman doesn't even speak German for christ sake.
Tell me what your thoughts about gimmicks. Fair, unfair or to each his own ?
Martinez- Hey if it works use it, who cares? If you can get away with it and it' working do it. I beat Repole when he already had Bingo Smith, I'm sure of it and he can say well if Iwas around this and that but there was no beating me that year. I was out to dominate the entirety of BBS and gimmick or no gimmick he had no shot against me.
Jay looks like he is going to make his cy mostly because the East is awful. Tell me what you think of the job that Jay has done the last few years leading up to his cy?
Martinez - His username says it all, I mean we're just beating a dead horse here I don't think jay was ever any good. He had some decent runs in UOSL with an easily weaker GM core than BBS but I don't ever remember him being dominant for an extraordinary amount of time in any version of BBS.
Which 3 gms manage to get under your skin and how?
Martinez - No one gets under my skin really but I think you and Broph easily have some of the more annoying amount of commentary that sometimes makes absolutely no sense. (ed note - if you don't understand it that doesn't make it doesn't make sense)
Stud pg or C?
Martinez – I’d say stud PG, you can win with a big who all he does great is block and rebound, but if you have a stud PG who can rebound, steal, score, etc you’re almost unbeatable.
top 5 teams as of now?
Martinez – I’d have to say Bucks, Blazers, Nuggets, Lakers and 76ers.
I would have thought that once Bird and Magic were announced then more teams would start tanking. Are you surprised that hasn't happened? And how would you pick first ?
Martinez – Well in the East alone there are 10 teams under .500, and another 5 out West. So that’s more than 50% of the league, and while yeah some of these teams aren’t really tanking purposely I’m guessing the reason why is because there already are so many bad teams out there.
How many years until your next championship? Are you satisfied with your rebuild so far?
Martinez – I don’t have a timetable on my next championship but I’d like one soon. As for being satisfied with the rebuild well, I had a start from CC in Cleveland with World B. Free and such but I like what I had done with the Clippers. I think I surrounded some good talent around Neal in Los Angeles which Hype never capitalized on.
Name your 5 all time favorite players that played for your teams?
Martinez – Jonas Valenciunas, Brandon Knight, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Brook Lopez
Is Bingo unbeatable? Would you agree that the bucks have more talent than the magic did but don't fit together that well?
Martinez – I don’t think he’s unbeatable but I do think aar has more talent around Bingo than repole ever did still I do think anyone can be beaten at any time and I don’t think aar is winning it this year or next year or any of the remotely following years which will only bump up repole’s gm value
2 players who outplay their ratings?
Martinez – Ugh wtf is it with these research questions. I’d have to say Steve Mix, on paper he doesn’t seem anything special but I like his 23ppg and 57%FG and
You are the new Grizz gm. What do you try to do for the next few seasons?
Martinez – Tank and tank hard. If I don’t have my own picks and get them, I mean what else can you do with that team? It’s nothing but mediocre right now so tank hard, rebuild, he’s giving you two extra freebie years so you can pretty much do whatever you want with the team.
Worst trade you ever made?
Martinez- Not the worst trade I ever made but the worst trade I never accepted which I will respond in the next question….
Worst offer (for you) that you ever made but wasn't accepted?
Martinez – It’s the trade that still haunts me to this day(and is exactly why I think I have some kind of Brandon Knight PG Curse) was rejecting Rickey Francis(on Skillz’ team) for a defensive minded PG his name was like Renaldo Sidney or something like that(I don’t know if he was a real player or not) at the time Rickey Francis wasn’t elite, he was very good but not elite and my PG was actually really good with nice ratings.
Skills tried desperately to convince me to trade for Rickey Francis because he wanted more of a defensive minded PG, I said no (which at the time was the RIGHT choice) and well the rest is history I guess.
give yourself 1-10 ratings on the following: 1)draft 2) fa 3)dc 4)trading
Draft – 6 I drafted a need, got the player I wanted without having to trade up and while he is nothing special yet I still think it was a decent pick.
Free Agency – 1 I wasn’t able to get much depth, I didn’t get anyone I really wanted
DC – 7 I mean there really isn’t much I can do with the player I have I think I can’t have a better DC than I do now
Trading – 7 looking back at the World B. Free trade it’s now bad value after Jo Jo going down in TC but I like the Eldridge Webb trade despite his contract, Jo Jos contract will be expired by the time Dantley and Dandridge rookie deals come to end, so I will have no HC issues and I still have plenty of room to play with.
Was your championship team the best one you ever had?
Martinez – No easily my best team ever was the one that got knocked out in the 1st or 2nd round perhaps by either you or Haberman I do not recall exactly but I do know on paper that team was amazing.
I had Brook Lopez, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Jonas Valenciunas, and I want to say maybe already had Carmelo Anthony on the team as well(maybe not) and I do not remember who my PG was but I think he was very good too(whatever happened to historical pages?) (ed note - good point; bring them back!!!!)
Brook Lopez was a 20-10-3+bpg player with efficient scoring ratings and he got injured for the playoffs. Kobe ended up retiring after playoffs, LeBron was older, and that was that but I think I won 60+ that year. I really loved that team.
Styro or HF?
Martinez – Eh, probably HF I like those young boys no homo.
Spence is the best commish bc…………….
Martinez – because he’s the only one who’s not a lazy fuck like a lot of commishes are. He’s single handedly kept BBS alive, yeah us GMs have a hand in it too but you get what you put in and he puts a lot into this thing.
