1. Make one guarantee about your team this season.
Championship. Really won't settle for less. Only way this doesn't happen is if Bingo goes down and that's obviously something I can't control.
2. What were your actual thoughts about Bill Walton? You seemed to overvalue him - how much of that was genuine and not strategic?
50/50 - Walton is a really nice player, but he's not more valuable than Kermit Washington or ML Carr at this point. He's a great passer, which is essentially meaningless and while he has 85+ strength/inside, his percentages have never been great. Also, he turns the ball over more than you'd like a center to.
I love Walton in real life, both as a broadcaster and from his playing days, so I overvalued him mostly for that reason.
3. If you care to share, who's the coolest athlete you've dealt with, and why?
Kyle Turley. The guy is just awesome. Whenever I've dealt with him, I always get brutal honesty, fun stories and just a really laid back demeanor. Another really awesome guy is Royal Ivey from the Thunder. Funny as hell and down to earth. There are probably a lot more that I can't remember off hand, but those guys stick out.
4. Where does John rank on your list of the top GMs? He's rarely mentioned, but he's heading for a third consecutive 60 win season, which will be his fourth since 2040.
At first I said "who?", because I always call him by his full handle. Bingo Smith has robbed him of championships singlehandedly (and will continue to), so I feel bad for him. He's done a tremendous job and right now, he's a top-5 GM. Probably not all-time, but currently.
5. One GM whose style you love, and one whose style you hate.
Repole - love his style. Methodical, makes smart deals and makes the most of what he has. A really smart dude.
JAH - No surprise here. Guy runs his team like the real life Jazz. Enough talent to make the playoffs every year. No more, no less.
6. How and when did you get into sims?
It has been a long, long time. I've been with my wife for 10 years (not married, but together) and I got into sims a year before we started dating.
I saw a forum on RealGM.com promoting sims and my interest was piqued. I joined a league run by a guy named Darin315 and had no clue what I was doing. I acquired a bunch of guys with "A" potential and ended up winning a championship soon thereafter. I eventually found NBN and GlobalACBA and both were tough leagues. Global simmed one day at a time and got really boring, really fast. NBN, however, is where I was really challenged. Great group of GMs. I also eventually ran my own league called Legends and I think I ran another league before that too, but can't remember. I used a different, more flawed sim engine and I forget what it was called too. Needless to say, I've been doing this for way too long.
7. Run me through your reasoning on your recent trade with the Hornets. I didn't think offense would be a concern for you this year, and I do think Willie Davis is by far the best piece in the deal. Tell me why it was the right move.
If I kept Willie and Bingo together, I'd be accused of winning with Repole's team, so I decided to make a move that allowed me to make this MY team.
Cowens is young and more valuable than Davis, however, I'll agree that he's not as good.
I've always loved Steve Mix. Guy is so efficient and Bingo has always succeeded in an inside system.
The sticking point with me was, and remains, how Buse fits into this equation.
8. Rank these GMs (apologies if you've done this elsewhere): You, Skillz, DBW, Broph
Me
Broph
Skillz
DBW
DBW has done fuck all lately.
Broph builds some great teams, but not dynasties and that's always what my aim is.
Skillz trades too often and is too indecisive.
9. Propose one new rule or rule change for BBS.
Reward teams for moving PGs to SG. Give them +10 handles or strength. If you want to move them back, they get the -20 handles and since PG is more valuable than SG, I think it makes sense that you get rewarded for making the switch.
A guy like Quinn Buckner is a perfect example. He'd really benefit from a move to SG if he got +10 handles, but it's still a risk.
10. Which GM without a ring would you most like to see get one?
Greeme. Good guy to deal with and a good GM. Shame he doesn't have one yet and gets harassed by Marty as a result. Greeme is a classy guy and easy to deal with.
Championship. Really won't settle for less. Only way this doesn't happen is if Bingo goes down and that's obviously something I can't control.
