The Dime! W/ Jay!
1. Jay, welcome to the dime. It's your CY as we all know. Tell us what you need to do to ensure that you make it.
The simple answer is to not GM like I have been for the last 5 seasons. Through some quality drafting and decent trades, we have some relatively young talent that teams would be willing to deal for. The key is actually using them to make a move to grab established talent, especially in the frontcourt. I can't rely on a defensive frontcourt of Boswell, Owens, Harge, Awtrey, and Kupchak to block shots or make stops. We have to bring in someone that will. There is also the case of having a player like George Irvine, a career 20+ppg scorer on 50+ FG%, wasting away on the bench and eating away a massive amount of cap. He doesn't improve this team or his value as a bench player, and needs to be moved.
2. Make a prediction for yourself: how many wins will you amass and what seed will you be?
I think we can get at least 45 wins this season. There are still moves to be made, but this team should be competitive enough to grab just a little more than we need and get into the playoffs. I'd say that puts us around a 7 seed. My division looks like it should be competitive, I'm interested to see how things play out.
3, You have been criticized a lot for complacency and keeping your youth for too long. Do you agree with this assessment? If you do, why do you still have so much youth on your roster?
I agree to an extent. The biggest problem I've had isn't unwillingness to trade, just unwillingness to actually go out and pursue a trade. All the young guys I've been criticized of holding onto too long were on the trade block for multiple seasons to little or no fanfare. Only when they are traded do GMs seem to speak out on how "valuable" they were.
We still have the youth because we're still shopping around. Again, little outside interest in it but I've been talking to a few GMs about some deals. Something will happen sooner than later.
4. Tell us about the thought proccess behind the Jon McGlocklin trade. You gave up a lot, but do you think it will be worth it? Are you worried for his TC?
One of the things holding this team back recently was my inexplicable admiration for Fatty Taylor. Maybe it's because he was one of my first few late draft picks that panned out, or his half-season of impressive production. Whatever it was, it was a hindrance. Reminiscent of the type of mindset I had in older FBB leagues where you could grab a leftover FA and turn him into a starter.
Glock is pretty clearly an upgrade and, more importantly, fits the exact type of offense I want to run next season. I'm not too worried for his TC. As long as he maintains his efficiency and most of his scoring, he'll be just fine.
5. Complete this fill in the blank: Tom Boswell will be an (all-star/role playing starter/bench player)
I think he'll make a fine role playing starter on another team. Last season he regressed a bit statistically, but still should be a capable 15/10 guy on a team. The most appealing asset was his high FG% for a big in his rookie season, something he seemed to have lost. Plus once I trade him he'll blow up on another team as my players tend to do.
6. What stats are you expecting out of Junior this year?
I'm really hoping JR Bridgeman can be George Irvine before everyone decided he had no value. He's practically shot 50% his entire career and I anticipate that will continue as he assumes a starting role. I still have some AC love to show him to up his inside and possibly strength (jumpshot already over 85). This guy did 16.8 pts, 5.5 rebs, 1.6 stls per 36 last season, I'm hoping he can maintain that pace.
7. If you could take over one team in BBS, which would it be and why?
The Utah Jazz. As dumb as it sounds, I feel like that team doesn't make enough "noise". I'd love to have players like Roberson and Gerard, and see if I could actually win a championship with that team. Portland looks just based of that shot blocking triumvirate that currently employ.
8. If you were a GM of an NBA team and you were granted 3 advisors, which BBS GM's would you pick and why?
Repole is the easiest answer. Not just because I know him but advanced statistics would be a big part of my organization's decision making and he has a deeper understanding than I. Contrary to popular belief, we don't necessarily agree on players (I still believe in John Wall, for example) so the discourse would be healthy.
Skillz because he pulls the trigger on trades much quicker than I ever would.
Play for the same reason you hire Charles Oakley as a coach. You need a guy there to keep the players in check. No one is better qualified for that role than the Heywood Hammer. He also allegedly has connections to Nike which could come in handy when trying to woo players. Hopefully these are legit connections.
Honarable Mention:
Broph - He really seems to know his stuff.
Aar - He has media experience and could help with that side of the business.
Marty - Cavs fans actually like Dan Gilbert for some reason.
9. Which teams near the bottom of the Eastern playoff hunt scare you as potential spoliers to your CY?
Maybe the Bulls, Nets, Philly. Admittedly I'm terrible at predicting at how other teams will do but a quick glance through makes it seem like these are teams I at least have to keep a conscious eye on.
10. You are offered Clifford Ray for George McGinnis and Tom Owens. Do you do it? Why/why not?
No, I don't even consider it. Clifford Ray is solid at what he does, but I'd imagine I could just go out and get a better player for that package. George McGinnis may not play up to his ratings, but he's been solid at SF and I believe would do well as a 3rd option. Tom Owens still has 3 ACs left in his tank and if I borrow from the Repole playbook, is a damn good SF in an insider offense. These are both players I'd move for a better player, if anyone out there is listening.
