The Dime! W/ Broph!
1. Broph, good to have you on. You just stole Kermit Washington in FA and have had some good luck as the Blazers GM. Is it a dissapointment if you don't win a title in the next 3 years?
Yes, I think it will be a disappointment, Grabbing Kermit for nothing was huge, I spent all last year looking for a PF like him, and couldn’t get one, so getting one for free is amazing. Now I can use my assets to improve the team, rather than search for a need. The issue is going to be beating Bingo, but, I think he will have a tougher time meshing in Milwaukee where aar doesn’t know exactly how to use him just yet, and one injury ends them.
2. What is your plan with the team? Go for it all this year? You seem to have a lot of assets and trade pieces to work with.
I don’t give a shit about building a dynasty, or winning for thirty seasons, I want a title. Now, saying that, I typically build around 1 or 2 rookie contract players, in part because I get attached them, but also in large part because salary wise it is so much easier to avoid the HC that way, and I pretty much live in permanent fear of the hard cap. I do everything I can to avoid going over it, so yeah, much easier. Thing is, if it comes to it, and Im not there yet and what I have left is Jones and Tree to trade, Im gonna trade one of them if I feel it puts me over the top.
3. Is there anyone besides for Bingo you would trade Bobby Jones for straight up?
Honestly, you could probably convince me to trade him for Derrick Dickey, but right now he is the perfect fit at SF. I feel he is overrated no doubt, I don’t see him as the top tier offensive player you can count on, but maybe if I weren’t lazy and AC’d him he could be that kinda player. I do know that he is pretty much the perfect player to me, doesn’t turn it over, has a great jump shot, blocks, steals and rebounds. But outside that, I think that’s just me, I don’t think he is a perfect player, just the elite type role player since he doesn’t have a place where he hurts you.
4. Who is your biggest competition in the West and why? Which GM do you view as your long-term competitor out West?
Habes, as much as he hit a rough stretch lately with his team being in not the greatest shape, he doesn’t seem to have any issues solving those worries, he gets undervalued/older players and seems to put together great teams with regularity. I could go rebuild for 2years and come back and in the meantime Habes has fully rebuild all the while winning 50+ games and making runs in the playoffs. That’s great Gming. Its risky, since you could end up completely fucked if things go sideways, like losing a top tier player in FA, but, its also impressive.
5. A lot has been made of Play's recent mediocre stretch. He says he's winning 60 this season. Does he have what it takes to take down the Bingo Smith Milwaukee Bucks?
I think he needs to make a move or two, depending on whether Webster Develops, but I think if any player is suited to stop Bingo its gonna be Dickey, who if Play is to be believed has 85+ inside strength jump shot Blocks Steals and D rebounding. That’s a big deal, but, if he can manage to put him at SF, well, that’s Dave Debusschere potential with the blocks and steals, kinda scary, well, really scary. And also why I would trade Bobby for him. I think right now the Bucks are better, and it will be interesting to see what Play does, but I think given the right moves he could yes.
6. Who should the NBA portland trailblazers select with the pick the Nets gifted them?
Honestly, at this point I think they should take two Centers, that way they can get hopefully at least two healthy knees between the four. Outside that though, I hope they grab Kendall Marshall, Portland has been in dire need of a PG for years, Andre Miller was a nice PG but never a fit, Felton was awful, Stoudamire wasn’t really a true PG, and Telfair, Bayless, Mills, Johnson, all these PG’s they pick keep failing. Marshall though has college experience, something Telfair did not have, and I think he could be a very nice facilitator for the team. As for the 6th pick (since I just noticed you really only refer to that pick), whoever the best available player is, I hate selecting for need, so if they have a guy at the 2 3 or 4 who they think is better than the options at 1 or 5, I really hope to god they don’t take that 1 or 5, take BPA and deal with it from there. I would love to see them use the picks to net us a great PG, but I dunno. The team hasn’t had an official GM for over a year, the training staff sucks and no coach either. Id trade the sixth for the Suns training staff and Popovich in a heartbeat.
7.Who are 5 players you expect to have big TC's?
Hrm, gonna have to do some research. If you mean ratings overall, not performance well Im gonna go with a bit of both.
First I would go with Michael Cooper, magic, though I don’t necessarily think it means he will be a sutd, he just has a lot of places to grow. Being pretty meh across the board means he can get better in a lot of places, and improve the ratings a ton. He appears to have a long way to go though, and being 21 it may be too much.
2. I think 466 Glen Gondrezick SF 22 6'6'' 218 B C C B B B for the Bulls
It seems like Play always picks the guy I want just before me, but that’s probably cause we both think the same things. He had great notes, can score inside, nice strength a good rebounder. I think he will be a really nice starter, and say his ratings hit B+ C C B+ B+ with RC’s and TC…that’s what Kauffman looks like at SF as well, and that’s after one TC…I really like the guy, dammit Play
3rd. Adrian Dantley, Cavs
Look Spencer isn’t going to say explicitly he has exceptional potential and lie, and if you have seen the way Spencer makes his draft files, that means the guy has 100 potential…and you don’t lose all your potential in one TC unless you are 18 or 19. I just cant see him going shit TC with that kinda potential back to back.
4. Darryl Dawkins, Heat
Honestly, I’m 50/50 on this one, but at 20, and having improved pretty significantly in both TC’s, I think he still has his potential, despite the worrying back to back B scouteds. Still going up inside and D and Jump shot so far is a good thing, and rebounding isn’t that hard to bring up, it takes huge jumps occasionaly. I think he sims seemingly a lot better than I expected, and picking him up for Carr was a great get.
5. Alex English, Pacers
The guy is taking the Larry Jones route, huge first TC and I see no reason why he wont do it again, (also don’t ignore Robert Reid, he was a solid player in the NBA, but somehow didn’t get notes, I liked the way his position ratings fell in the draft file)
5.b Phil Smith, J traded him, held onto him probably too long, and now he will explode, which is why J shouldn’t hold onto players…
8. Which team is better setup to compete for the long haul: the Spurs or the Blazers? Why?
If I wasn’t Gming Portland I would definitely say Portland. Why, because Im completely comfortable with my starting PF and C, Rollins has elite ratings pretty much everywhere except his athleticism, and his rebounding, but offensively and defensively his ratings are as good as anybody. Kermit is a great defensive big, and doesn’t hurt you anywhere. And combined both are locked up for the next three years or more, Kermit being just 26, and Tree just 22. At SF, Campy and Bobby are a wash, though I think Campy’s shooting may be a pretty large product of his lack of help, his TS% wasn’t all that good, 1.2% behind Bobby despite having a three point shot. But I think right now Bobby holds more value, and he brings that shot blocking and rebounding to the table. At PG, MRR is no doubt going to be a special player, and of course if things hold to plan he brings more to the table than Bernie, but, Bernie never turns it over, and proved in the playoffs he can score if necessary, putting up 27 plus a game. With AC’s he could be very very good, and is also just 27. AT SG, the Spurs grabbed Beard, a player I love, but he also just hit 30 and is an inside oriented wing, which means it could be tough for him to not lose production as time goes on, in the meantime, Wilkes finally broke out some, going up inside and outside in TC, which was a pretty big deal, and he was amazingly efficient offensively, putting up 1.3 turnovers per game despite playing backup PG some. He is expiring though, which is worrying, and Robinzine who has gone +6 in two TC’s and has B+ A- C- A- C+ ratings. both being just 24 and un AC’d.
9. Will Jay make his CY? How many wins will he get? Will the Hawks ever be really relevant?
Honestly, with it being J, yes, he will probably make his CY, and he will probably get 44 wins and the 8 seed, because since he has been here it has seemed like J is just doing enough to survive, and that’s it, he doesn’t wanna make a big move, no risks, just don’t fuck up, its annoying as hell, but he has enough assets where he can just get by and keep assets.
10. To compete or keep rebuilding, which should these teams do: Celtics, Pacers, Sixers, Wizards, Raptors, Spurs, Cavs?
Celtics: Keep rebuilding, he hasn’t really had shit for luck so far, but getting Bernard was a start, he should pick up a first or two each for Jasper and King, but his team is in no way ready to compete, no PG and a weak front court.
Pacers: Compete, there are a lot of rebuilding teams, but I think he should just look to make 42 ,being Biggie, not having to worry about his CY would help him a lot in not making bad moves later, Walton/Cunningham/Ellis/English/Lucas is a pretty solid lineup, not a title contending lineup, but one that should be competitive, so there isn’t a huge point in rebuilding for another year.
Sixers: Probably stuck winning, since he lost quite a few firsts just before being hired. If he could get his picks back fairly cheap rebuilding would be right up his alley, but with Carr Gervin Love Foots, that’s a nice lineup that Reed deal is tough to deal with though, but it’s a nice team still, just took too long getting there for the last GM.
Wizards: Rebuild still, you have time, may as well cause the team doesn’t seem to be special, or overly loaded with youth.
Raptors: It seemed like he should rebuild years ago, then he won a title, but I think losing Carter and beaty, and dealing Lacey, signaled a change. But he does have a 76ers first or two, so, maybe he tries to keep going, its DJ.
Spurs: Win, which he is doing, MRR should be good enough, he covers for his turnovers, and so yeah.
Cavs: Win, having too much youth can hurt said youth, at least I believe, and that team has been rebuilding for a long ass time seemingly.
