Plenty in 20 features twenty rapid fire questions posed to BBS GMs. The first edition of the article features Blue.
1) Most valuable player in the league trade-wise other than Bingo and KAJ?
22/7 on ridiculous percentages, impressive defensive stats, and limited turnovers. The name is Bobby Jones.
2) Give me your All-Rookie Team if the season were to end today...
C: Tree Rollins
PF: Ira Terrell
SF: Adrian Dantley
SG: Alex English (Rookie of the Year)
PG: Michael Ray Richardson
3) Better GM: Skillz or Broph?
Broph has a more methodical approach. His knowledge on the sim engine might only be matched by repole, but all things considered, I think Skillz is a better GM. The way Skillz can reconstruct a mediocre roster into a contender in a day or two is pretty impressive. It isn't the conventional model for success, which is why I respect his SKILLZ even more. The way he tries to pump up the value of some of his mediocre players can be annoying, but he usually gets someone to bite, so it obviously works.
4) More valuable 76ers player: Dawkins or Gervin?
Gervin, slightly, but Dawkins is making a case for himself after the nice TC he just had.
5) Who will win the West?
The Nuggets may have taken a step back with the Bob Love deal, but I still feel like greeme’s team will make another finals appearance. They’re built for the playoffs.
6) Who would you pick 1st overall in this year's draft?
I’d most likely take King, but that has a lot to do with my need for another scorer.
7) I'm sure you consider MRR/Campy the best young duo (25 and under) in the league - what's the second best?
The inside-outside duo of Derrek Dickey and Gus Williams is probably my favorite young duo outside of my guys. Rollins/Jones in Portland are a close 3rd.
8) You can take over any team in the league right now other than your own. Which team is it?
I’ll go with Indiana. Lucas and English is a great start to a rebuild, yet there’s enough work to be done where the GMing job presents itself as a challenge. I also wish I was in the Eastern Conference.
9) Would you trade both MRR and Campy for Bingo Smith?
Not a chance. I’m really excited to build around Campy and MRR. It’d make little sense for my team direction.
10) Most valuable asset on the Hornets?
Probably his futures? But if you want me to choose a player, then probably Andre McCarter. In his second season, obviously started with really high potential, and is already close to a top 5 point guard. Not sure what to make of him retaining his C scouted, but I don’t think it means much.
11) Who has a better chance of making the playoffs, the Hornets or the Grizzlies?
I hope Pig makes it, but New Orleans has a better shot at making it. Top to bottom better roster and they have less ground to make up.
12) Most overrated player in the league?
Dare I say Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? His incredible individual performances hasn’t translate to an overwhelming amount of success for the teams he’s played on.
13) Most valuable asset on the Bulls?
Derrick Dickey. Elite shot-blocker, locked up, and I still believe there’s some upside. He’ll be a 20/10/4 kind of guy for the next 6-8 years.
14) Rank these players in order of value: M.L. Carr, Dr. J., Jo Jo White, Fred Brown, John Mengelt
1. M.L. Carr – Age and contract puts him first. I don’t see him ever developing into a #1 scoring option but his game is sick.
2. Fred Brown – A year younger than Jo Jo and a more favorable contract situation. I think Jo Jo’s the better player by a hair.
3. Jo Jo White – Complete stud. He might be the best shooting guard in the league right now.
4. John Mengelt – Habes does wonders with players like these. He’s in a system in which he’ll especially thrive in, but he’s a good player regardless. One of the better point guards in the league.
5. Julius Erving – Charlie Scott gets shit for his poor output despite his nice ratings. It might be time to turn our attention to Dr. J.
15) Better GM: JAH or Andy?
JAH, for now. As I mentioned in my previous write up, Andy’s had some poor luck in the draft, but it’s time to break the cycle of mediocrity. If he can do that, he’ll surpass Jah, who hasn’t done anything special.
16) You have to keep one: Campy or MRR. Who do you keep?
For some reason, I feel more attached to Campy, so I’d probably keep him.
17) Who will get the 8-seed in the East: Knicks, Pistons or 76ers?
The Pistons have the least chance. I don’t think they can make up the ground unless they can add an impact rebounder/shot blocker, and I mean some like Artis Gilmore, which probably isn’t realistic. Adding Hazzard gives them a chance, I suppose.
The 76ers have the trade assets if they get absolutely desperate. For some reason I see them coming up short; I don’t have much faith in dwaynec’s depth charts.
I think Skillz will end up successful in resetting his CY. I still think he has some work to do, but he’ll make it happen.
18) Will the 76ers get CY'd?
Hope so. I have their pick
19) Which BBS team is in the worst shape going forward?
The Memphis Grizzlies. Tough situation without his futures. Pig could use the help of a few impact vets like Barry or Glock (or maybe Zelmo, but good luck talking to DJ) to overcome the CY next year, and then maybe Denton and/or Gale could help him reacquire his next few picks for a quick rebuild. I’m not sure who has a hold of those upcoming Grizzlies firsts though.
20) Why are the Rockets playing so poorly?
Defensively, they’re awful. They hold a -2.6 rebounding margin, but that number would probably be worse if opponents weren’t shooting close to 49% against them. They don’t guard the three point line very well either; opponents are shooting 45% from three. No team should ever have to start Jim Chones, and Maravich/Dampier is a pretty weak defensive backcourt. With all their firsts intact, I expect Houston to rebuild soon.
