1) You traded Butch Beard for the Hornets pick this year and then they went ahead and added a bunch of talent. Are you worried?
Skillz: Yes. In my past experiences with Kobe he's been extremely complacent and hesitant to deal, so I thought that would carry over and I'd be stuck wtih a mid lotto pick. Worried is relative though....am I freaking out? No. I'm still going to get a decent pick in a draft where the difference from 5 to 15 isn't huge. It was just a miscalculation by my part; it happens.
Aar: They're 2-2 since the trades and one is a 37 point loss to the Spurs. Don't get me wrong, I like what the Hornets have put together, but they're a pretty middling team. I think that they'll be better next year as McCarter improves.
2) If you were named the new GM of the 76ers, what would your first move be?
Skillz: Start Tom McMillen to get his value up, trade him for an outside SG like Mike Gale or Chris Ford, AC Foots' handles and three-point and go outside with Gervin/Foots/the SG/Dawkins/Reed and add a good rebounding backup 3/4/5.
Aar: Trade Foots for a non-PG, trade Reed for expiring and tank for three more seasons. The Magic are going to be good for awhile, so you may as well build around Dawkins and Gervin. I think McMillen is a decent piece as well. I can see him fitting in well with those two.
3) Now that the notes are out, it looks like Bernard King will go 1st overall in the draft. Let's say that he did and you had the second pick, who are you taking?
Skillz: I don't know if I'd pick King # 1 overall anyway. Cooper to me had the best notes, so I'd take him # 1. If he has 85+ potential, he can be elite since he has no weaknesses. I'd go Sikma # 2--I think he could be pretty sick. He's not athletic, but he's strong and I bet his inside will see a lot of increase. King would be my 3rd choice.
Aar: To me, King looks like the guy who should go first. I think that Sikma should go second. He looks like a really cool, versatile big man prospect who I think might have the second most upside in the draft. I'm not sold on Cooper.
4) Which player has surprised you most this season?
Skillz: Butch Beard. I didn't think his efficiency would translate with his volume, but it did. I probably shouldn't say this but I reccomend Kobe make him his # 1 option.
Aar: Clifford Ray. I regret trading him more and more each day. Him and Walton could've been such a nice frontcourt duo, but I got sucked in by people saying that he was a bad signing and I moved him. He is a really nice piece to have as a complimentary player.
5) Dick Snyder just got injured for the rest of the season. Is his contract now officially untradeable?
Skillz: Not at all. I don't know why people hate on Dick, but hell I'll take him for expirings or something in the offseason if someone wants to do that. I think he's a star point guard in the right system. Sure, his contract is big, but it's not worse than Reed's--who has been traded over and over and over again
Aar: I wouldn't touch him. Point guards aren't that tough to find, Snyder is on the wrong side of 30 and having a 36 year old who can't do much making $25.2 mil. doesn't float my boat.
6) Which player has the worst contract in BBS?
Skillz: Willis Reed. It's an eye sore, and I don't think he's ever really been an elite center for the last 5 years. I was REALLY unimpressed with Willis when I had him...he just didn't impact the game very much. We were better with Jasper Wilson
Aar: I'm going to go with Goo Kennedy. It's not a max deal, but I really just don't feel he brings much to the table for what he's being paid. He's a great rebounder, but you can find great rebounders quite easily. I got Dale Schlueter for a 2nd rounder. If Goo was a better shooter, it may be a different story, but right now, I think he's vastly overpaid.
7) Who is the worst #1 overall pick in BBS history?
Skillz: This is a tough one because I don't remember everyone's careers very well. I'm gonna go with David Walker--he put up some good career #'s but I always viewed him more as a negative than a positive because of his TO's. Dexter Rider was pretty bad, as was Fab Melo and AJ Perkins. I might actually go with Perkins--I hated him.
Aar: I'm going with Dexter Rider. He was a good scorer and that's about it. When he made the move over to shooting guard, he was okay, but still nothing special. I doubt that he was ever an All-Star, but I really can't remember. Melo got better as his career went on, Perkins was a top-tier scorer and Walker was a good big who did a bit of everything. Rider was nothing special.
8) It's a unique situation, but the Bucks own the Thunder's picks for the next nine seasons. What do you think is the end result?
Skillz: Habes will end up trading Aar Mengelt or a player of similar quality for 1 or 2 of the picks back. Can't see Habes being interested in anymore than two of them. Obviously it's a weird position, but Habes has proven he can sustain success without his picks. He doesn't have much value on that team though, so it will take some maneuvering to get assets.
Aar: I really don't know at this point. All I can say is that I wish it was a different GM. Habes seems to be the type of guy who can get up for a challenge and has the desire to prove people wrong, which isn't a good look for the picks. If I end up with Mengelt, I'd be happy, but it's fun to own nine straight picks from another team.
9) What team in the league would you least want to take over and if you were forced to, what would you do with them?
Skillz: The Pistons. I'd tear it down, stop pretending that Charlie Scott is even a top 100 player, get my picks back and tank. Block should be good enough to get your picks back. Elmore will get you a decent rebuilding package. Murphy, maybe a 1st or 2 at this point? Not worth hanging onto that kind of team.
Aar: The Cavs. I know that this is a weird pick, but all of the rebuilding has already been done. Now that the fun stuff is out of the way, I'd have to sit back and watch another GM's team grow. Marty - before you freak out, I'm actually paying you the ultimate compliment. You've done a good job and I'd prefer to take over a bad situation than a great one.
10) If you could have any player from the 2045 Draft right now to add to your current roster, who would it be?
Skillz: Robert Hawkins, 2nd round pick, Jazz! Realistically, I wouldn't trade as much for him but everyone else in this draft wortwhile is very, very good but not elite. Hawkins--no one has noticed him--could be really good with RC's/AC's. SG version of Rickey Francis? IDK, I wanted to be alternative with this pick.
Dawkins/Roundfield/Sobers/Williams/Free are all talented but imperfect
Aar: Who? I think I'd take Andre McCarter. With some ACs, RCs and another good TC, he could end up being B- A+ A+ A D C, which would be pretty cool!
