Eastern Conference GM Rankings
Instead of doing the usual 30-1 rankings, I’m going to mix it up and give everyone a number grade out of 100. We’re unique here!
The rankings are obviously completely subjective.
Atlantic Division:
Boston Celtics—DBW—90
DBW won 2 titles with the Timberwolves and reached the finals a number of times. Definitely one of the upper echelon GM’s in the league, and someone who has been able to attain consistent success in BBS. Although he has gotten unlucky in free agency with his Celtics, I feel like he could have been more proactive with his squad to get them to a higher level. Still, one of the better GM’s in BBS and borderline top 5.
Miami Heat—Hype—77
Hype’s always been a consistently good member in every version of BBS. However, he’s in and out of the league a lot, and it’s hard to turn to a defining moment in this version. Hype isn’t super active, but he has decent changeover on his teams and isn’t afraid to make a big move. I’d say he’s regressed quite a bit though.
New Jersey Nets—Nanz—83
Nanz has had a very up and down BBS career. I recall him winning a couple of titles with Denver before leaving for the Lakers and then New Jersey. He’s proven he can build elite teams, but he’s also been pretty inconsistent. His current Nets team has a lot of potential—let’s see if Nanz can prove he’s an elite GM once again.
New York Knicks—Skillz--?
Yea, I don’t know. You guys can throw out numbers so I can finish the rankings at the end of this article sequence.
Orlando Magic—Repole—96
It took Repole a little while to get going, but he’s taken the league by storm over the past ten seasons. He has consistently put together elite teams, and is one of the GM’s with a distinct style. To me, Repole has done the most impressive job in the league lately, and has to be considered the best GM in BBS.
Philadelphia 76ers—Dewaynec—60
I have no idea who this dude is, so I can’t pass fair judgment. I know I tried to rape him in a Gervin trade and he wisely declined, so that bodes well for his future. However, you’d like to see a rookie try to be more active trade-wise, so I can’t grade him too highly. It’s also tough when the majority of good GM’s are in the East, so he’ll have to work his way up.
Washington Wizards—Heatflash—70
HF has built some decent teams with the Wizards and seems to be improving. However, he’s been in and out of the league a lot and hasn’t proven to be anything better than average. His ego is also far too big for someone who has been so mediocre.
Central Division
Atlanta Hawks—Jay—75
Tough to grade Jay here because he is so new to the Hawks. I’ve seen him in BBS and NBN, and he’s generally a top 10 GM, but he’s done a pretty mediocre job with Atlanta. Jay had all sorts of young talent to play with and could never really get them over the hump, which is not a sign of a good job. He has some more nice young players to work with currently so we’ll see if Jay does better work building a contender on his second chance.
Charlotte Bobcats—UKfanJohn—80
I seem to remember UK doing a decent job with Phoenix before he got fired for his little fiasco, and he’s proving himself again in Charlotte. His team will compete with the Magic next year for a finals berth, and anyone who can put together a team with Thurmond, Hayes, Issel, and Walt Frazier should be considered competent enough.
Chicago Bulls—Play—95
There is no arguing that Play has had, without question, the best tenure in BBS. He owns every important category (wins, playoff wins, playoff appearances, titles, finals appearances, etc.) and has shaken off my only criticism of his in the past (that he rebuilded too much). Considering the league in its entirety, Play is the best GM in the league. However, when I consider the fact that Repole joined late and Repole’s recent dominance in the same conference, I place Play right below Repole in the power rankings. Nothing against play—I just have been more impressed and am frankly more intrigued by Repole’s GM’ing style.
Cleveland Cavaliers---CC—73
I have to be honest: I hate CC’s strategy. This is probably a low rating for someone who tends to be able to put together 50 and 60 win teams, but I’ve never seen CC do anything besides tank and win. How do you not get bored repeating the same formula every time? To me, it’s monotonous and takes little effort. Anyway, that’s just me, and if you make the argument that CC should be ranked higher, I’d buy it.
Detroit Pistons—Andy—65
I hate to do this because Andy is a great guy and he’s been a top 5 BBS GM before without question, he’s just been horrible in this version. A lot of it is bad luck, but at some point you have to consider the 54 years in context. The fact of the matter is this: the Pistons have won over 50 games just twice in the last 30 seasons.
Indiana Pacers—Biggie—67
Biggie’s improving. I think he could be a good GM in the future, but he’s not there yet. My problem with him is he is so long-sighted he becomes short-sighted. He tends to look at the bigger picture too often, which impedes him from making legitimate moves to compete for a title. And when he realizes he was wrong, he’ll rush into a mediocre trade and stay in the middle for a while.
Milwaukee Bucks—Aar—92
Aar’s been hit or miss in this version of BBS—big on titles and big on losing. His regular season success…re failure…is pretty astounding for someone who is generally considered to be elite. Still, when most of us judge based on rings and finals appearances, Aar is still among the top of the pac. He’s one of the best in the league at assembling truly elite teams, and has proved that time and time again.
Toronto Raptors—DJ—85
DJ’s not my favorite, but he’s had the second most playoff appearances in the league and can dabble in contention as well. He’s impossible to deal with, but he rarely compromises his team and you don’t usually have to worry about the state of the Raptors.
So, Eastern Conference ratings:
14. Dewayneoc (60)
13. Andy (65)
12. Biggie (67)
11. Heat Flash (70)
10. CC (73)
9. Jay (75)
8. Hype (77)
7. Ukfan (80)
6. Nanz (83)
5. DJ (85)
4. DBW (90)
3. Aar (92)
2. Play (95)
1. Repole (96)
Skillz ?
And yes, the numbers are completely arbitrary. Just want this to be a good forum for discussion.
