Repole: Uncut
(Ann Arbor, MI) - Whether he wants to be or not, Repole is my friend. Because of sim leagues nonetheless. Weird. Shelter was provided. Conversations on how mediocre Kobe really is in the clutch were had. Alcohol was consumed. Alcohol was consumed. Friendships forged. Gerald Green fanboyism witnessed.
Cooooool mannn. wait did you guys decide to meet in real life just because you lived close or something or went to the same college?
I got a job in Ann Arbor and didn't have a place to live and didn't want to drive from home every day. I asked him if I could crash for a week while I found a place since it was summer and most of his roommates were gone. They said yes.
I stayed for a month.
That pretty much has nothing to do with this article but serves as a good introduction.
Jay: The Orlando Magic have been successful over the last few seasons, culminating in championship seasons in (whatever years). Describe your reasons for your teams success.
Repole: My Johnny Green teams rebounded well, didn't turn it over, and got steals+blocks. They weren't as efficient shooting the ball as my Omar Green led teams, but the extra possessions was what made us dominant.
You currently are trying to take the #1 pick away from me by tanking. What type of players do you usually target during a rebuild? Is there a certain skill set?
Shooters who rebound, get steals, and don't turn the ball over.
Writer's Note: He's talking about Bingo Smith and Johnny Green again. This makes his Gerald Green obsession even more illogical.
The current apple of your eye and emerging BBS star is a small forward named Robert "Bingo" Smith. Is Bingo Smith the future of BBS, or a flash in the pan rookie on a tanking team?
His percentages need some help, but after I pour 3 ACs into that it shouldn't be an issue. Other than that, he's pretty much perfect. Wish he didn't enter the league at 23 though, bit old for a rook.
Writer's Note: Bingo Smith just won Rookie of the Year in a season where he averaged 25.4ppg, 8.1rpg, 2.3apg, 2.2spg, 2.9bpg and made 1st Team All Defense.
Norm Van Lier: 6 triple double this season. Light work. Bingo Smith is a bitch.
Writer's Note: Agreed.
While we're on the subject of future stars, which future BBS star excites you more? Magic Johnson from the great Michigan State University, or Larry Bird who played for your hometown Celtics in real life? How would you use them if you had them on your team?
Magic will be a better BBS player because rebounding at PG is huge. Bird will be a great scorer, but passing in FBB is useless, and scorer's aren't that hard to find. Still, a guy who can score and rebound is always nice.
Writer's Note:
In my conversations with you regarding FBB, you always reiterate the meaninglessness of assists and the importance of ball control. How important is ball control (lack of turnovers, tons of rebounds) to a team's success in a game like FBB?
Huge. More possessions means more points for your team and less for the opponent.
Writer's Note: He forgot to mention that it is typically better to score more points than your opponent if you want to win games. Thanks Madden.
Let's talk about the league for a bit. As everyone knows, this league has a rule that limits the players you can put at PG and troll FBB with. Let's pretend that rule was just overturned. Name the one player you'd want to move to PG and why.
Bingo Smith. He'd be Carl Cole with elite offense. GOAT status.
Writer's Note: Who the fuck is Carl Cole?
Other than Bingo Smith, the player you'd most want to start your franchise around right now.
Kareem. Nice job greeme.
Writer's Note: Greeme did get Nate Thurmond, but trading Kareem already? Not sure about that.
Do you see any competition in the East that you are worried about?
The East is always pretty strong. Play getting Kareem sucks, because he'll actually build a nice team around him. Skillz is pretty much always competitive.
Writer's Note: .............
Name your top 5 favorite GMs
Aar, Skillz, Play, Broph, Jay...I guess? I don't know. Not much of a difference between my favorite GM and my 28th favorite. 29th sucks though.
Writer's Note: Make me feel special why don't you. Also, solid list.
How's Spencer been doing since the birth of his child?
Best commish ever, league would be dead under any other commish with the same circumstances.
Writer's Note: I agree. He's done pretty well for this to be one of the least important things in his life. But better than Sir William Clapton, budding Oxford professor and teenage girl plunderer? His ego says nay.
Let's talk about the Pole.
Describe the origins of your love affair with Gerald Green. Please do not leave out the part where you watch D-League games with the stat sheet up to keep progress on how well he and his team are doing.
He's missing a finger on his shooting hand, I just think that's awesome. He's tearing up the DLeague right now, deserves another NBA shot.
Writer's Note: Repole happens to be one of the only people not affiliated in some manner with the NBDL that tunes into FutureVision (The D-League's version of League Pass) almost daily.
Also, Morris Almond has been tearing up the D-League for about 4 ars now.
Writer's Note: Another famous person missing a finger? Walter Jones.
Who is Walter Jones you ask?
You are going to graduate from UofM with a Computer Science degree and large companies like Amazon are trying to recruit you. So where the hell is your sim at?
I'll be working on it again this summer after graduation when I finally have some free time. Hopefully by 2013 I'll have an engine done that can actually simulate a game.
-
On a scale of Mario Balotelli to Emeril Lagasse, how Italian are you?
100% Italian, but I'm about as Americanized as someone can be.
Balotelli's far and away my favorite player (probably the only Inter fan who still feels that way).
How did your roommates find out about you and sim leagues? Did you tell them? Did they understand? Have they celebrated your success?
Jim knew from freshmen year, everyone else has seen me on the couch with my laptop and asked what I'm doing. I mentioned to Chris that I won a championship. He said "Oh."
What makes Jay so great?
His ability to almost Jimi Hendrix on my couch and then drink the next night.
Writer's Note: In all seriousness, drink responsibly.
Ask me any question.
Why does the interviewer get an AC for these articles when they don't do any of the actual work?
Writer's Response: That's a fair question. I'd say it's the initial engagement more than anything else. This article likely is never written if I never pester you with these questions. Hence, no article. I believe the interviewer deserves some credit for attempting to create content and interest. After all, isn't that the entire point of articles anyway?
The article had to be formatted by myself. It had to be proof-read by myself. It had to be posted by myself. The interview subject just has to answer some questions and that is the end of it on their end. I'd say it's a fair exchange.
