Glossary:
PER - an attempt at combing all stats into one, per minute rating. Meh, not that applicable here, but I listed it anyways. Average is 15.
fbb_oRtg - a player's points produced per 100 possessions used, taking into account shooting efficiency, turnover rate, and offensive rebounding. League average is 112.4.
Poss% - The percentage of a team's possessions that a player used, primarily by taking a shot, getting to the free throw line, or turning the ball over.
TS% - A true measure of shooting efficiency, similar to eFG% except it also factors in free throws. League average is 53.6%.
TO/poss - The percentage of possessions a player turned the ball over. Again, assists are not factored into possessions. League average is 11.2%.
REB% - The percentage of available rebounds a player grabbed while on the court. League average is 10%.
SG Top 10 Rankings
These rankings do not take contract or age into account, only who the best players in the league are right now, at this very moment. To decide that, I've used stats primarily from this season combined with ratings and a given player's statistical history.
1. John Havlicek SG 29 6'5'' 209 B A+ B- A C+ B
-What a beast. It's hard to ask for much more than a guy who puts up a 61.4% TS% to go with his big volume scoring and limited turnovers. He's far from a one trick pony of course, as he's a good rebounder and no slouch on the defensive end.
2. Jeff Mullins SG 27 6'4'' 193 B+ A+ B B C B
-Mullins isn't far off from Hondo, in fact he's an even more prolific scorer. That aside, he's a bit more turnover prone, and not quite as good of a rebounder or defender. When I had the #2 pick in the draft I didn't think Mullins would be in Gail's league, which turned out to be true, just not the way I expected it to be.
3. Rick Barry SG 25 6'7'' 208 A- A- C A- C+ C
-After Mullins there is a decent drop off. Rick Barry is good, really good in fact, but he isn't in the same tier as Mullins or Hondo. The biggest plus Barry has going for him is that he rarely turns over the ball, which combined with his solid percentages and high volume makes him a very valuable offensive player. He's played well on the defensive end, and can rebound a bit, so he doesn't have any obvious weaknesses, he just isn't as dominant as Mullins or Hondo.
4. Willie Merriwether SG 32 6'3'' 210 B- A C- C+ C D
-Willie's one of my personal favorites, as he's the closest thing to Omar Green we'll probably see for a while. The scoring is exceptional, and although it's not as high in volume as it has been in the past, he's still as efficient as anyone. He does a pretty solid job on the glass, and despite a C+ defensive rating, racks of the steals.
5. Jim Barnett SG 24 6'4'' 170 B- A+ C- A C B
-Skillz called Barnett the next Omar Green, and though that distinction probably belongs to the guy ahead of him on the list, Barnett has certainly answered his critics this season. As the second offensive option on the best team in the league, it's hard to ignore Barnett's value. He isn't notable defensively or on the glass, but he's as good as it gets scoring the ball.
6. K.C. Jones PG 37 6'1'' 210 B A- B- A- C D
-The natural PG has adjusted to playing the SG position quite nicely. His efficiency is as high as anyone other than Havlicek on this list, and though he isn't putting up huge volume, he's still carrying his own weight. The only issue with KC is that he's a mediocre rebounder for a SG, which is compounded by playing next to Willie Somerset.
7. Frank Ramsey SG 38 6'4'' 206 C+ A B- A- C- D
-Frank's been a top 10 SG for as long as I can remember, he's been an absolute rock of stability, and yet I don't feel like he has much value around the league (even in the short term). He can still put up some volume, and do so efficiently, and he still puts up great numbers defensively, so it's hard to understand why Frank doesn't get a little more love around here.
8. Dick Van Arsdale SG 26 6'5'' 210 A- A- C B+ C B
-DVA turned out pretty similar to his brother, and both are quality starters for their respective teams. Right now Dick is probably carrying more of the scoring load than he should be, but he's doing so pretty efficiently, so it's hard to complain. He's a mediocre rebounder, doesn't put up great defensive stats, and doesn't really separate himself from the other guys on this list offensively, but there's no doubt he's a top 10 SG.
9. Hal Greer SG 33 6'2'' 184 B+ A B A- C+ C
-There was a time when Hal Greer was as good of a SG as you could find in BBS. Unfortunately father time has started to catch up with him, but his combination of efficient shooting, volume, and rebounding is still valuable. The turnovers are a little high, and he isn't an elite defender, but I'd gladly take him on my team.
10. Gail Goodrich SG 26 6'1'' 170 A- A B+ B D+ C
-This last spot mainly came down to Gail and Don Ohl, with Gail getting the slight edge due to his superiority in pretty much every catagory other than shooting efficiency. When I drafted Gail, the expectation was that he might become a similar player to Don Ohl, and yet now that he's at that point, it seems like a bit of a let down. He doesn't put up the huge volume I expected, and though he's a nice scorer, his all around game is pretty mediocre. On the whole, Gail's a good player, but he's far from great.
Honorable Mention
Keith Erickson - His 131 oRtg is crazy, should probably be the Lakers top option.
Don Ohl - The turnovers are meh, but he's a hell of a shooter still.
Hot Rod Hundley - Efficiency problems have started surfacing.
Si Green - Could barely give him away, and yet statistically he's been absolutely terrific in limited minutes.
George Lee - Dude can still score.
Wali Jones - He's become a decent player, though still a bit of a disappointment.
Kevin Loughery - Still Solid.
Earl Monroe - Mediocre volume, but his efficiency is solid.
Flynn Robinson - He can score a bit, but the rebounding is just awful at SG.
Dishonorable Mention
Herschell Turner - Awful, absolutely awful, shouldn't be playing at all.
Donnie Freeman - For a guy with nice scoring ratings, he sure is bad.
