THE MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS IN BBS: 29-16
29. Mel Daniels
C 23 6'9'' 220 B- B D C+ B+ A
C 23 6'9'' 220 B- B D C+ B+ A
BOOM. Beautiful handling and shotblocking. The scoring and rebounding are pretty bad, but he probably has a ton of potential. He'll be way higher if the offense explodes like it has a chance to. We'll see. I forgot about him the first go-round and my little Shorty Patterson goof made room for him. Congrats to GAME.
28. Levern Tart
SG 25 6'2'' 201 A- A B B+ C+ B
SG 25 6'2'' 201 A- A B B+ C+ B
The turnovers are gross, or else Levern might crack the top ten. An excellent scorer both inside and out who maintains great percentages at a really high usage rate, rebounds excellently, and approaches two steals a night, Levern really only has one setback to his game, but it’s a big one. It’s nice that the Celts can offset the problem by surrounding LT with low turnover guys, as Jerry Sloan and Phil Jackson are. It’s less nice that the problem is actually compounded by Dave Bing, once thought to be Boston’s franchise player, who appears unable to handle point guard duties for the foreseeable future. He’s also expiring.
27. Jim Davis
SF 25 6'9'' 228 A C C A- B+ B
SF 25 6'9'' 228 A C C A- B+ B
Busting out in a big way for Golden State. 25/9 with 51% FG and 81% FG. There are a lot of awesome triple slash SGs to be had, and it seems the trend at SF is to create awesome inside scorers. He doesn’t get you many steals or blocks, the turnovers are less than ideal, and he’s expiring, but he’s got a long career as a top option ahead, and if the B potential is real, he could end up a better scorer than Johnny Green.
26.Dick Van Arsdale
SG 24 6'5'' 210 A- B+ C B+ C B
SG 24 6'5'' 210 A- B+ C B+ C B
Both Van Arsdale brothers have conventional wing ratings on paper, but nothing about Dick grabs you like his brother’s A outside rating. And that’s pretty much the difference in their rankings. Tom’s career 44% clip from beyond the arc elevates his offensive game to elite, whereas Dick, super-productive as he is (should be noted he’s the much better rebounder) just doesn’t have that one aspect of his game pushing it over the top. Should be noted they’re both very good and locks to get better.
25.Tom Van Arsdale
SF 24 6'5'' 202 A- A C B C B
SF 24 6'5'' 202 A- A C B C B
TVA is the better Van Arsdale in a really tight race. I see shades of Rick Barry here –two players whose ratings won’t you, but are elite performers. TVA shoots 46/90/42 and his three point shooting is only improving (he shot 46% beyond the arc last season). Barry’s probably more valuable on name recognition and his team’s performance, but there are also valid reasons for the difference in their values: Barry’s a far better rebounder, a better stats defender, and one year younger than TVA. He’s also about on par with the coming SGs.
24.Jeff Mullins
SG 25 6'4'' 193 B+ A+ B+ B- C B
SG 25 6'4'' 193 B+ A+ B+ B- C B
Another really efficient two who again is mostly just a fantastic scorer. Mullins is no stats defender, and he turns it over just a tad more than is ideal. But Mullins is ahead of the above crop of SGs because he’s easily the best shooter of the group and he’s a strong rebounder. Docks his value a bit that he’s expiring. Still, what a scorer.
23.Bob Love
SF 24 6'8'' 215 A- C+ C- A- C+ B
SF 24 6'8'' 215 A- C+ C- A- C+ B
That Bob Love is a second-tier piece is largely a testament to the quality of the guys in front of him, as Love might be the best inside scorer in the league. Offensively, Love looks like Ho Walker with a bit better percentages, fewer turnovers, and more free throw attempts. If not for the fact that the Thunder play likely the slowest pace in the league, Love might have the flashy 30 points a night to boost his value. Love is a poor stats defender and he can’t range out to the three-point line just yet. He’s hovered around 30% for his career, so with an AC (ahem) and some TC improvement, he could get there. If he does, he’ll reach superstar status. For now, though, he's a scoring machine, a great ballhandler, and a plus rebounder with room to grow.
22. Jim Barnett
SG 22 6'4'' 170 B A C- A C- B
SG 22 6'4'' 170 B A C- A C- B
Awesome player who, it turns out, exists. I’m pretty out of the loop. Not exactly the same shooter as a few of the SGs ranked behind him, but he’s 22 with a few years left on that rookie deal, and presumably he still has some potential left. I’d pump points into his inside scoring and try to make him the next Big Don Ohl. He's also a nice stats defender and ballhandler. Also I’d like to reiterate how annoying it is to list the same shooting guard 12 times.
21.Gail Goodrich
SG 24 6'1'' 170 B+ A B B D+ B
SG 24 6'1'' 170 B+ A B B D+ B
The rebounding’s a glaring deficiency, but Goodrich is next in line in the onslaught of scoring guards because of his absurd 52/89/47 triple slash. It’s apparent there’s no shortage of guys with percentages that wow, making it all the more impressive that Goodrich’s gains him separation in value. A few ACs to his rebounding could see him skyrocket to top ten value.
20. Willie Merriwether
SG 30 6'3'' 210 B A C B- C D
SG 30 6'3'' 210 B A C B- C D
Merriwether is a perfect player, and his league-wide lack of value is just a testament to the fact that ratings matter a lot more than some people pretend they do. His triple slash of 52/91/51 takes the cake. It’s also the best I can recall seeing in a sim league. He leads the league in steals per game. His turnovers are absurdly low. He’s one of the best rebounding shooting guards. That he’s 30 and on a pretty big contract are fair concerns, but he’s never gotten due recognition around here, and I’d say he’s a top ten player.
19. Lou Hudson
SF 23 6'5'' 210 B+ A- C B+ C+ B
SF 23 6'5'' 210 B+ A- C B+ C+ B
He’s having a quieter season that most of the wings ranked below him, but Hudson showed last year he can be the lead guy. I expect his three-point shooting to improve, and I think he projects to be the most complete player of the group of up-and-coming wings. He’s excellent on the glass, he can handle probably 25% more volume than he’s handled this year, and he’s only been through two TCs, so I think the scoring efficiency will come along. Also love the shotblocking from a wing. Overall, I think Hudson can catch up to the others in scoring, and he’s got them edged everywhere else.
18.Bob Sims
SG 29 6'5'' 230 B+ A- A- A C+ C
SG 29 6'5'' 230 B+ A- A- A C+ C
Quietly turned into one of the best shooting guards. Sims doesn’t have a weakness, is an elite scorer, and rebounds well. Not a standout anywhere outside of scoring, so he’s neither the flashiest nor your ideal franchise player, but San Antonio has surrounded him with great pieces and it’s working.
17.Archie Clark
PG 24 6'2'' 175 B- B A B C A
PG 24 6'2'' 175 B- B A B C A
I first heard of Archie Clark yesterday. I quickly shot Andy an offer, assuming that because I hadn’t heard of him, everyone else was busy overlooking him too. Turns out it was just a reminder that I’ve gone to shit as a GM. Do you think these articles will be a good pick-me-up? Like maybe I’ll start to get a better sense of value around here? They’ll also help make my players better. That’s pretty good. So is Archie Clark. He’s basically Bob Weiss, but younger, with A potential and inside scoring. The inside scoring could prove the difference between Weiss being a really nice point guard and Clark being a superstar – I think Clark will be able to handle much more volume as he develops, and could end up in KC Jones territory. That’s a massive projection, but we’re only two TCs in with this guy and he’s gotten a lot better.
16.Walt Hazzard
PG 25 6'2'' 191 B- A A A+ C A
PG 25 6'2'' 191 B- A A A+ C A
Would need to have much greater volume and efficiency to be ranked any higher. Ratings are pretty, A potential and all, but he still turns it over and is shooting pretty woefully for a B-/A guy. Last year was a massive step forward – one that suggested he’d be a top point guard for a long time. This year, not so much at all. Rebounding’s nice and I’m sure he defends really well, but he’s already on his max and he really should be scoring way better.
