Dave Bing PG 33 33.7 19.7 5.0 7.4 1.6 0.2 3.2 .448 .820 .350
When the new GM won the first pick overall, everyone knew that the pick was going to be Bing. Right off the bat, Bing had impressive ratings across the board and an outstanding inside game. Bing is scoring at a 20 point a game clip, grabbing rebounds at an impressive rate and is doing a solid job dishing the ball. However the big knock on him right now is the turnovers, he has to turn them down. However while some around the league are worried about him, this particular writer compares him to Walt Hazzard. Walt came into the league turning it over, had so so percentages but the team was patient with him and he developed into an damn good player. The Celtics are building something and have one of the most impressive young back courts between Bing and Tart.
Cazzie Russell SF 21 6'5'' 218 B+ B+ C- B+ D+ B
Cazzie Russell SF 37 25.7 11.3 3.0 0.8 0.9 0.3 0.9 .451 .833 .448
A pick that shocked just about everyone around the league, Cazzie has had a pretty quiet season thus far for his team. He has started and come off the bench as the team was trying to find the spot in which he can excel in. Russell has shown the ability to play some good defense, score when he actually takes the shots and rebound despite his lousy rating. Hudson right now is the run away rookie of the year, but the younger Russell has some solid ratings that can be worked on. Cazzie is once again in the starting lineup and finally found his role on this team, we expect his numbers to go up across the board from here on out.
Lou Hudson SF 22 6'5'' 210 B+ A- C B C+ B
Lou Hudson SF 32 38.7 24.6 7.9 3.1 1.6 1.1 1.6 .460 .873 .421
Getting the best player at the third spot? Well it's looking like that. Hudson has come into the league and dominated the league from the get go. It's hard to find anything wrong with this guy, he has shown that he can do it all. He is not an explosive scorer, his high being 35 thus far into the year but he averages 25 points a game. That's just so damn consistent, something you really want. He is averaging 8 boards a game, 3 assists per contest coming from the small forward position. To boot, his percentages are impressive across the board, Hudson really should be the only guy in consideration for the rookie of the year award. This Bobcats team is extremely young, starting four rookies and a second year player. Hudson however he the clear leader and captain of this team.
Walt Wesley C 21 6'11'' 220 B- C- C- A- B+ A
Walt Wesley C 36 30.4 9.6 9.1 1.9 0.8 1.4 1.3 .416 .691 .000
Big men usually take the longest to develop along with the point guards, however the Clippers went with the big time potential player in Wesley. Thus far into the season Wesley has flashed some real good signs for things to come in the future. He is averaging 9/9 on the season and has shown the ability to dish the ball and swat some shots away for this club. The Clippers are a surprise 18-18 team considering the talent they have, but the front court is leading the way with this team. Wesley has joined the Lee-Love tandem and has really rounded out this front court. This is another young team, if both Wesley and Weiss continue to develop this will be a nice tandem to watch out for.
Donnie Freeman SG 22 6'3'' 185 A- B B- C C B
Donnie Freeman SG 37 34.6 22.3 4.7 2.8 1.1 0.3 1.6 .505 .805 .444
Another one of those picks that took some by surprise, Freeman has been a starter since day one. Freeman has shown the ability to play both the shooting guard and small forward spot and score from anywhere on the floor. Freeman has eclipsed the 40 point mark already, pouring in 44 in a few contest. Freeman was considered by a few to be the most ready prospect in this draft with his good inside game and solid outside game. However his defense and rebounding leave a lot to be desired. Either way the Warriors selected him and are enjoying the tandem he has formed with Hazzard, the two most consistent players on this team. The Warriors recently picked up Luke Jackson to give this team more inside scoring, it will be interesting to see if they can turn things around.
Archie Clark PG 23 6'2'' 175 B- B B+ B- C A
Archie Clark PG 28 36.9 19.1 5.1 8.6 1.5 0.0 3.3 .415 .754 .368
Another team in the middle of rebuilding the entire team, the Pistons selected the point guard Archie Clark. Clark could be argued that he is outplaying the first overall pick Dave Bing, but it's quite close. Clark is scoring 19 points a game on a team with not a lot of scorers, John Tresvant being the only consistent scorer on this team. Clark has also shown the knack for the boards, averaging 5 a game and is dishing out more assists than Bing with 8.6 a contest. However like most young point guards, Clark is turning the ball over far to many times and that will need to be worked on. However the Pistons are pretty confident that they have their point guard of the future in Clark. Once this team gets some legitimate play makers around him, we can see Clark becoming pretty good.
Dick Snyder SG 21 6'5'' 207 A- C C B+ C- A
Dick Snyder SG 38 36.4 20.8 4.6 1.7 1.3 0.1 0.8 .480 .878 .000
The Wizards have enjoyed the fire sale that they have been holding all year long. With only one more player remaining, Dean Hollis who is mired in trade lingo with the Magic at the moment, this team has needed Snyder's scoring. Snyder is leading the team in scoring with 21 points a game. Snyder gets the job done with a ton of impressive moves down in the post and fifteen feet away from the hoop. However Snyder doesn't even attempt to score from anywhere else on the floor, he has yet to attempt a three pointer this year. Either way this team is completely restocking the shelves and it wouldn't shock me to see Snyder used as trade bait somewhere down the line. Snyder is however the best scorer on this team at the moment.
John Beasley C 22 6'9'' 225 B B C- B+ B A
John Beasley C 41 21.3 10.4 6.3 1.0 0.4 0.2 1.0 .473 .733 .409
One of the more intriguing big men in this draft, Beasley has primarily been used as a backup this season. Posting 10 and 6 off the bench with some impressive percentages. However he did start four games due to an injury and he posted 13/9, 23/12, 25/11 and 14/7 some very encouraging numbers. The Mavericks have long flirted with the idea of trading Connie Dierking, something that might actually happen now that they have two capable replacements. Beasley has shown the ability to stretch the floor and even hit a few three pointers in the process, he is solid on the boards and plays capable defense. With some work put into him, Beasley can become quite the intriguing player in this league.
Jack Marin SF 22 6'7'' 200 B B- C A- C+ A
Jack Marin SF 37 18.5 7.7 3.6 0.9 0.5 0.4 0.5 .398 .849 .340
Marin hasn't really seen all that much action this year thus far sitting behind Willie Jones who the Hawks have been trying to move. Marin has scored in double digits thus far and grabbed double digit boards, but it's really hard to get a full grasp on the type of player he can be for this team. Marin shoots at a good percentage from the line, so this should suggest that he can be a solid shooter elsewhere. However for a player only playing 18 minutes a game he has shot the ball 230 times, so the FG% could be what they should expect for the rest of the year. Either way Marin remains an interesting player for the Hawks because he can really grow with Van Arsdale.
Joe Ellis SF 22 6'6'' 175 C C D+ A A- A
Joe Ellis SF 35 8.0 1.7 2.8 0.3 0.5 0.1 0.1 .385 .864 .000
Finally the last player on this list, Joe Ellis has yet to receive the playing time to showcase anything at all. However on paper he does look to be one of the more intriguing players for a starting five, the ultimate starting five round out type. Ellis already brings lock down defense, impressive rebounding for a small forward however that is accompanied by a total lack of an offensive game. Carroll Hooser the 20th pick in this draft is actually getting playing time and producing for this team. The Raptors at the moment are a sub 500 team but they really don't look like they will be giving Ellis any real playing time for some time. We will have to revisit this at a later time to really see what Joe Ellis is bringing to this team.
