Heading into the All-Star Weekend many teams were looking forward towards the break as many teams have small nagging injuries. The Weekend allows them to get a few days rest while some of the brightest names put on entertainment for the fans. First lets take a look around the league at a few things that standout to me.
- Ben Rollins leading the league in scoring despite not drawing any legitimate interest. Then again making 26 million dollars will do that to you.
- The Bulls heading into the break and riding an 11 game winning streak. Maybe there is something to breaking the rules and not playing your best players.
- The Wolves and Clippers seem to have the top two spots in the West at the moment, but after that seeds 3 through 9 are only separated by three and a half games. The Grizz have only played 32 games thus far and will have a heavy schedule in the second half.
- Cruel faith. The Nets are 6 and 34 but at least have their pick. The Spurs are 3 and 35 and don't have their pick. Who wins in all of this? The Indiana Pacers who own both their pick and the Spurs.
Three Point Shootout
Winner: Jerry West
Heading into the three point shootout you just know that someone will have to step up if they really want to win it. The First round saw the likes of Parker, Greer and Francis coast bye and the final spot go to a battle between Hundley and West. The tie breaker went to Jerry West due to him hitting more money balls than Hot Rod.
In the second round once again Tracy Parker led all scorers this time upping his score to twenty points, West yet again was able to get bye with fifteen points. Both Greer and Francis only scored thirteen points, unable to convert any of their money balls.
Having winning the first two rounds Parker seemed like a shoo in to win this tournament, however he completely gassed out after his last shooting performance. He peaked to early and didn't pace himself as West who scored fifteen points in the two previous rounds won the round with fifteen points becoming the three point shoot out champion.
Dunk Contest
Winner Paul Wilcox
There never really is much to write about the dunk contest as all we see are numbers and names. We don't know how the fuck FBB comes up with these numbers, but we can say that Marvin McLeod probably had an insane dunk because he almost got a perfect score, something that actually means something in FBB. I'm assuming that no props are included in these dunks, so what can he do that hasn't already been done? Either way McLeod, Wilcox and the rookie Walker moved into the finals. Walker and McLeod both really sucked it up evident by their scores and Wilcox was gifted the victory essentially.
Rookie-Soph Game
MVP: Carl Cole
Jerry West, Bob Boozer and Johnny Green are some of the names that decided to not take part in this game for the sophomores making their team sort of doo doo. The Sophomores had to rely heavily on the likes of Al Attles, George Lee and Dick Barnett. The rookies for the most part were at fill force more or less despite missing Jerry Lucas due to injury.
The rookies took the lead in the first quarter and never trailed for the rest of the game. They took a six point lead into the half and continued to pour it on through out the rest of the game which included a 40-22 fourth quarter beat down. When looking at the box scores you see the rookies had more assists, steals, blocks. They also had a better field goal percentage and got to the line more than the sophomores.
Doug Moe led the way in the scoring for the rookies, going 8 of 9 from the field and finished with 19 points. In total the rookies had eight players in double figures scoring, with Carl Cole spreading the love around. Carl Cole took down the games MVP award with the stat line of 16 points, 7 assists, 2 boards, 2 steals and a block.
For the Sophomores it was Dick Barnett who led the way in scoring and finished the game with 18 points. They only had five players in double figure scoring and probably the biggest reason for their downfall was the fact that Al Attles who played 31 minutes didn't spread the ball around. They had to rely on Neumann and Burton to make plays happen.
All Star Game
MVP: Wilt Chamberlain
I'm going to start this off by posting the score, 164-119. Knowing the score already, you know that one of these teams received a beat down of epic proportions. One team had six players in double figures, the other team only had one player without double figures. The numbers really pop out at you when you look at the box scores, but lets take a closer look at some of the match ups.
Wilt vs Russell. A lot of people like to think that the gap between these two is close, it's really now. Wilt once again proved as to why he is the better player of the two. Wilt finished the game with a stat line of 14 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 4 blocks. Russell did everything he could to match up with him posting 15 points, 9 boards, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal. However look at the glass, the West grabbed 57 rebounds where as the East only grabbed 33.
Russell, 5 of 13. Knight, 6 of 20. Hollis, 4 of 11. Oscar, 2 of 8. Worthington, 3 of 8. The Eastern conference simply didn't shoot the ball well at all in this game, 44% from the field. Again we have to take a closer look at the point guard play of this squad, Knight and Barker combined for ten assists, the rest of the team only had eleven assists.
The Western squad shot 65% from the field, finished the game with 35 assists as KC Jones had as many assist by himself as the Eastern point guards. Baylor had 31 points, Tanner had 27 both matching or exceeding the leading Eastern Conference leader. The only player not to finish with double figures was Randy Sinclair, who only played eight minutes.
Wilt won the MVP award of the game, but you can't say enough about Tanner Thompson. In just fifteen minutes of play he finished with 27 points, going 10 of 10 from the field. 4 of 4 from beyond the arc and three for three from the charity stripe. In addition to that he even managed to grab three boards while in limited action. Dean Hollis and Oscar Robertson simply got lit up in this game both Baylor and Thompson, badly.
At the end of the day the West won the three point shootout, the dunk contest and the All-Star Game. However as long as the Bulls hold the championship, everything has to run through them.
