I thought about doing the top 20 under 25 years old. I decided to do rookie contract instead because I look at the number of TCs a guy has been through more than age.
1. Wilt Chamberlain (MIN) – C 23 7’1 281 A- C B A- A A
2. Oscar Robertson (PHI) – SF 21 6’5 205 A- B+ B A- B A
3. Jerry West (LAL) – PG 21 6’2 175 B+ A- B+ A- C+ A
4. Bill Russell (CLE) – C 24 6’9 229 B+ C- B- A A A
5. Lavelle Langston (CHI) – PG 23 6’1 165 C A+ B B+ D+ B
6. Hal Greer (LAL) – SG 23 6’2 178 B A B A- C+ B
7. Si Green (WAS) – SG 25 6’2 188 B- A+ B A- C- B
8. Hot Rod Hundley (HOU) – SG 25 6’4 188 B+ A- A- A- C B
9. Rudy LaRusso (MIL) – C 22 6’8 222 B+ C C A- A- A
10. Sam Jones (MIL) SF 26 6’5 206 A- C+ C+ A- B- B
11. Don Ohl (HOU) - SG 23 6’3 191 B A C+ C D B
12. Bob Boozer (CHA) – PF 22 6’8 215 A- C C- B B+ A
13. Willie Merriweather (DET) – SG 22 6’3 199 B- A- C C D+ A
14. Tom Heinsohn (NYK) – PF 25 6’8 234 A- C C A A- C
15. John Smyth (MIL) – PG 24 6’2 196 B C+ A- A- C C
16. Bob Hopkins (LAL) – 25 6’8 215 B D+ C- A- A- C
17. Guy Rodgers (CHA) – PG 24 6’0 188 B B A- B+ C A
18. Lennie Rosenbluth (UTAH) – PF 26 6’4 190 C+ A- A C A- C
19. Johnny Green (ATL) – SF 25 6’5 205 A D+ D C A B
20. Bailey Howell (PHX) – PF 22 6’8 223 A- C C C+ B A
21. Bumper Tormohlen (HOU) – C 22 6’8 230 C+ D+ D A- A- A
22. Vern Hatton (WAS) – SG 23 6’3 195 C A+ A B D+ C
23. Dick Barnett (POR) – SF 22 6’4 190 B- B+ C+ B+ C B
24. Paul Neumann (PHX) – PG 21 6’1 175 C+ B+ A- C+ C- B
25. Al Attles (BOS) – PG 23 6’0 175 B C B+ B C+ B
• Wilt is easily #1
• West and Oscar round out the top 3 mostly because of name recognition but I don’t think anyone has concerns that they will not be top 10 players in the league. They may just not be playing PG in the longterm.
• I had a lot of trouble putting Bill Russell #4. I don’t think he will ever become a dominant player offensively. However, if you don’t have Wilt your best shot at beating him is by having the best guy to defend him and that is Russell.
• Langston is really good. He may be the best PG to win championships with on this list. West, Robertson, Rodgers, Attles all turn it over too much. Neumann and Smyth aren't championship PGs.
• The next 5 are really a matter of preference. Greer is the best now. Green isn’t far behind. LaRusso may end up being the most valuable once a few of the elite big men are gone.
• Ohl and Merriweather are incredible shooters
• I'm not a Heinsohn fan. He doesn't do anything really well. Everyone is going to say he is meh and Sincalr 2 after he gets a max this offseason.
• Hopkins and Howell are really suffering from being in outside focuses.
• Smyth and Rosenbluth are surprisingly good
• Most prospects, besides the top ones, have some sort of significant flaw. If not more than one.
• Last years draft was awful
Some people are going to argue for players like Guy Rodgers to be much higher. I'm just not a fan. I think there really are only 10 elite prospects and after that it is a matter of preference. You may want to reorganize the top 10, but I don't think anyone other prospects are above those 10.
Each of the last 4 drafts have had 1 huge name: Chamberlain, Robertson, West, Russell
Each of the last 3 drafts have had 1 bust in the top 5 picks: Sauldsberry/Howell, Adrian Smith (BOS), Barnett/Attles. Boston has drafted three of those guys.
The only breakout player not drafted in the top 3 recently is Langston. I would like to see more surprises in the draft. I'm not saying Jerry West should be a bust like play would argue, but I think more allstars need to come from outside the top 5. This draft represents a great time to do this since there are not any elite prospects from the notes.
