I'm a little bored with the standard mock drafts so I thought that I would do something a little different. I am going to pick 5 guys I think will be sleepers and 5 guys I think will be busts. The five are listed in no particular order. Obviously it is all relative so a bust could be somebody who I think will go top 5 who just turns out to be a decent starter and a sleeper could be an early second rounder who turns into a starter. Player comparisons were inexact bc there were a lot of guys that don't have good matches.
Busts –
5 - George Bon Salle PF 6'8'' 220 22 C+ C D+ C+ B+ A
Somebody will take him late lotto and he will never be that good. Guys that rebound and aren't good defensively have no place in the league. Will end up as a 4th big and that just isn't good enough from a late lotto pick.
Current player comparison - Vaughntavious Reed
4 – Rayford Wells SF 6'6'' 190 21 C+ B C- B- C A
Probable 7-10 pick. Looks like any number of small forwards who don't get time. He might start at some point in his career but not on a good team.
Current player comparison - Togo Palazzi
3. Win Wilfong SG 6'2'' 185 24 C+ C+ C+ B+ C A
Probable top 10 pick. He just won't be that good but if it says in someone's notes that he can block shots the player will go earlier than he should. In reality he will be a good defender and an offensive liability.
Current player comparison - Jesus Calderon
2 - Woody Sauldsberry C 6'8'' 220 23 B D+ D+ B+ B A
Top 5 pick. He just isn't that good. He will be a decent inside scorer/bad ft shooter which just makes him an inefficient shooter who demands shots. Good defender/avg rebounder. All in all he will be a starter but not what one would expect out of a top 5 pick.
Current player comparison – Bob Hopkins
1 - Lennie Rosenbluth SF 6'4'' 190 24 C B+ A- C A- B
Top 10 pick. He just won't be good enough to justify that slot. He has a C defensive rating which is compounded by the fact that he will get blocks and steals. His ratings look nice but the holes in his game are too many to justify the pick.
Current player comparison – nobody.
Sleepers –
5 - Dick Duckett PG 6'1'' 185 24 C+ C B+ B+ D C
Early second round selection. Didn't get any mention from Spencer which is always a red flag. On the other hand lots of these older players can't shoot threes at all so a C for outside might just make him a very solid ft/midrange shooter. Pgs also seem to improve more than other positions. Worst case he should be a decent backup.
Current player comparison - La'Shon Lesser
4 - Bill Ebben SG 6'4'' 190 22 C+ A- C B- D+ B
He will go late first round and end up starting and scoring 25 pts on the Knicks.
Current player comparison - Tristan Wesley
3 - Charlie Tyra C 6'8'' 230 22 B- C- D B- C+ B
He will go somewhere around 20 but turn into a guy that can start for a lot of teams.
Current player comparison - Xavier Russell
2 - Lavar Lue PG 6'1'' 198 20 B- B- C+ C+ D+ C
He will go early second. He will turn into a solid scoring pg. He is only 20 so it is a decent bet that he has some potential. Won't be great, maybe never even a starter, but could be a solid backup.
Current player comparison - Don Ackerman
1 - Lavelle Langston PG 6'1'' 165 21 C A- C+ B+ D+ A
He will go 6-8 but my guess is that looking back on the draft 5 years from now he will be the second or third best player in the draft. Pg is a position that seems to be saying goodbye to its superstars and is not as deep as it was a few years ago.
Current player comparison - Austin Rivers
