order based off of day 80
1. Indiana Pacers - Wilt Chamberlain C 7'1'' 275 21 A- D C+ B A- A
Whoever gets the #1 pick is going to be a force in the league for the next 4 if not 10 seasons. Wilt with a descent supporting cast is likely going to be a threat to any playoff team because he is going to be that good. The Pacers can’t complain about getting the #1 pick and the rights to Wilt even though they already have a frontcourt with potential to succeed. Wilt would allow them to shift Durell Valentine to PF (you would be an idiot to move Wilt from Center). They could then look to move Phil Jordan for some veteran help and the team may be well on its way to its first serious run in 20+ seasons.
2. Philadelphia 76ers- Hal Greer SG 6'2'' 175 21 B- B B- B C+ A
I don’t think there is much debate on who to take with the second pick. It has to be Hal Greer. He is a complete SG and should end up being an allstar for a lot of the next decade. The 76ers, like the Pacers, don’t necessarily need a SG, but the only way they can get away from this pick is to reach for a big time scoring and poor defending PF prospect in Bailey Howell. I don’t think that is the right choice for several reasons. Do the 76ers really want to risk losing Guerin in FA? Doubtful. At this time, there is no way Guerin is worth the max so the 76ers would be best advised to move him and take Greer.
3. Portland Trail Blazers - Hot Rod Hundley SG 6'4'' 185 23 B- B- B- B- C A
The Blazers may finally have something in Red Kerr. He looks like the first piece to building a new foundation to win. He won’t ever be enough to carry the team though. This makes the Blazers first selection in the draft a pick that could define the team for the next 5 to 10 seasons. There are three possible routes the Blazers could go. Woody Sauldsberry would give the Blazers a complete frontcourt that would make them a playoff team year in and year out for a long time. Bailey Howell would do the same but the frontcourt would not be as well rounded. Finally, Dan could choose to go with Hot Rod Hundley. Since I’m from West Virginia, I’m probably biased on this pick, but Hot Rod is going to be a great player. He won’t have a really weakness and has a chance at being moved to PG (his real life position) in the future. The possibility of moving him to PG is a huge perk IMO. I also just like Hot Rod as an all around prospect better than the other two guys.
4. Miami Heat - Bailey Howell PF 6'8'' 220 20 A- C C C B A
Insane just landed star PG Bradley Barker and will start building the franchise around him like he did with Steph Curry. If Insane is going to follow the same plan as he did in Memphis, he is going to draft a big man here. Sauldsberry may be the safer bet, but it is highly unlikely that he is the next Demarcus Cousins. Bailey Howell potentially could provide a second 25+ppg scorer for the Heat which would allow the team to add several players to play defense and fill whatever role is needed. He makes more sense for the Heat IMO.
5. Los Angeles Lakers - Woody Sauldsberry C 6'8'' 220 23 B D+ D+ B+ B A
The Lakers have been in a bad spot for a long time. The team is finally getting itself into a position to compete again with Clyde Lovellette and max cap this offseason. The Jordan Price contract is going to hold them back for another 3 seasons though. I believe that the top 5 in the draft are the five guys I’ve been talking about for multiple picks now. Therefore, it only makes sense for the Lakers to take Sauldsberry here. Adding Sauldsberry completes their frontcourt which is going to be huge with the amount of great big men in the league right now. Even with this addition, the Lakers have work to do.
6. Utah Jazz- Lavelle Langston PG 6'1'' 165 21 C A- C+ B+ D+ A
The Jazz lost maybe the most underrated PG in the league to FA last offseason in Earl Dawson. Jah will likely be looking to replace him. Langston is the only PG in this draft that is worth any pick close to the lotto. I think taking him this early is a mistake, but I am confident he will be gone by pick 8 in the actual draft. Jack Twyman looks like the real deal at SF and Jah will overvalue the performances he has gotten from Gabe Simon and Tyrone Kemp on a losing team. I think take one of the drafts SF and moving him to SG would be the better move for the Jazz.
7. Golden State Warriors - Rayford Wells SF 6'6'' 190 21 C+ B C- B- C A
The Warriors need more of a true PG and better defense. Neither of those things are available at this pick so it could be moved. I don’t any team should reach for need in the lotto, but I don’t think there is a great difference in talent after the top 5 so it is more acceptable. I think Rayford Wells is the best player left and should GAME decide to ever stop tanking the Warriors may surprise some people.
8. Boston Celtics - Larry Friend SF 6'4'' 185 22 B B+ C- C+ C- B
The Celtics gave up one of their two franchise guys in Koni Bruton for the ability to tank. They proceeded to do a bad job tanking and drafted Jerry Bird. Bird already appears to be a bust. Since the Celtics already had bad luck with a late lotto last season, I would look for them to go with a safer pick this year (this is the team that drafted Ricky Roe and watched the developed rookie turn into a star scorer). Larry Friend fits the exact Ricky Roe mold and can be moved to SG like Roe was to play beside JT Irish. The Celtics may consider Lennie Rosenbluth and try to run an outside offense, but I’d be skeptical of running an outside offense with one of my best shooters having a poor midrange game.
9. Minnesota Timberwolves - Win Wilfong SG 6'2'' 185 24 C+ C+ C+ B+ C A
The Timberwolves may have not been getting offers they wanted for QD and Omara, but they waited too long to begin tanking this season. Win Wilfong looks like a boom or bust prospect that will at least be a good defensive role guy. Since the wolves are beginning their rebuild, I think Wilfong is a good fit.
10. Toronto Raptors – Lennie Rosenbluth SF 6'4'' 190 24 C B+ A- C A- B
DJ has always had a GM strategy that is basically play it safe and hope the guy has potential. Rosenbluth has interesting notes and ratings. Spencer said he likes Rosenbluth as well. I think DJ is willing to risk this pick on those factors. However, I’m not a fan of Rosenbluth and I don’t think I would take him. He has too many holes in areas I value highly.
11. Washington Wizards - George Bon Salle PF 6'8'' 220 22 C+ C D+ C+ B+ A
The Wizards are probably a team better suited for a full rebuild. Si Green is going to be very good, but the rest of the team is too old and not talented enough to come close to competing. This pick should be made based on the direction the Wizards want to go. I think either way the team has to take a big man. Salle has A potential, but I’m still not much of a believer. I really don’t like this draft much past the top 10.
12. Atlanta Hawks (from Los Angeles Clippers) - George Brown SF 6'6'' 200 22 B C- D B C B
Brown sounds like a really solid role player with some potential to be a #5 starter. The Hawks have Carr and Ellison expiring so they may need to add depth to the position. He also blocks and steals which is something everyone values.
13. Charlotte Bobcats - Jim Krebs C 6'8'' 230 22 B C+ C- C+ C+ B
The Bobcats are beginning a complete rebuild. I’m not sure if there are any good players left to do that with. I think Krebs is a great pick because his notes say he may be better suited for SF in the future. Since whoever the Bobcats take at this pick isn’t going to be one of the key players in three season, it is better to start out with flexibility and potentially depth. Krebs provides a guy who can play C, PF, and SF. He is also in a similar form to Li Guo Wang which could turn out to be a nice surprise.
1. Indiana Pacers - Wilt Chamberlain C 7'1'' 275 21 A- D C+ B A- A
