This list represents the ten worst contracts in the league. This was determined based on how hard these players would be to trade both right now and in the future.
10) Amos Sexson SF 27 6'10'' 223 B A- B- A- C B
$13,200,000 $14,400,000 $15,600,000
Sexson is tradeable... barely. He was sick when he was on a second round contract, but now he puts up mediocre numbers on an even more mediocre team. His percentages are awful and he's not above average at anything.
9) Marc Gasol C 35 7'1'' 271 B+ C C B B+ F
$19,656,000 $21,168,000
Currently, this contract would be tough to unload for expiring. Gasol was one of the league's best players and then literally died in the last TC. The good thing about it is that next year, it will be expiring and will no longer be an issue.
The same can be said for our next entry...
8) Will Barton SG 29 6'7'' 217 B A- D+ C C- D
$16,800,000 $18,000,000
Barton is a great scorer, but he has horrible ratings and I doubt that anyone would trade expiring for him at this point in time. It will be a moot point next season when he becomes expiring.
7) Thaddeus Young SF 32 6'9'' 232 A- B D A- C+ D
$19,383,000 $20,874,000 $22,365,000
Thad used to be incredibly valuable and is now hard to trade. The biggest knock on him is his D handles and unwillingness to pass the ball. Luckily, he still shoots good percentages and doesn't turn over the ball, so there's an off chance that someone will take a flyer on him.
6) Terrence Williams SG 33 6'6'' 220 B B B+ B C+ D
$10,890,000 $11,979,000 $13,176,900
Williams is a good player, but nobody would want his contract at this point. This is likely the last year of him being an effective starter and at 35, nobody will want to pay him over $13 million. His contract isn't really that awful, but I think that it would be tough to trade him - especially for the sort of value that he used to fetch.
5) Marquis Teague PG 27 6'2'' 187 C+ A- B+ A- D+ C
$14,400,000 $15,600,000 $16,800,000 $18,000,000
The sad thing about Teague being ranked at number 5 is that he really shouldn't be, but with point guards so readily available and such depth at this position in the league, Teague would be tough to trade with his contract. His numbers are okay, but definitely don't warrant such a big contract. When the Magic snagged him last season, it was considered a monstrous deal for him - now, I'm not so sure.
4) Brandon Jennings PG 31 6'1'' 178 B- A A B+ C C
$18,480,000 $20,160,000 $21,840,000 $23,520,000 $25,200,000
Simply put, life is unfair for whoever has Jennings. He was all-league 1st team two seasons ago and now he's just a bad contract. His issue is similar to that of Teague - too many point guards. I wouldn't be shocked if a contending team takes him on, but his contract is just ugly looking. At age 35, he'll be making $25 million and that's a tough pill to swallow.
3) Eric Gordon SG 31 6'3'' 225 C+ A A- A- C C
$18,480,000 $20,160,000 $21,840,000 $23,520,000
Same situation as Jennings, except he'll be 34 and making $23.5 million. The biggest difference is that Gordon isn't nearly as good as Jennings. He has solid ratings, but it will be hard to fool GMs who look at his stats. Gordon is on the wrong side of 30 and isn't getting any better.
2) Tyson Jackson SG 24 6'2'' 178 C+ A C- A- C- C
$12,000,000 $12,000,000 $12,000,000
Tyson Jackson just plain sucks. He puts up awful numbers and even though he's still young, he's not worth his salary at all. Funny thing is that he has great percentages and rarely turns the ball over, but either he's not shooting it enough or he is just worthless overall. I wouldn't touch this guy with a 20-foot pole and I wouldn't be surprised if he is a perennial mid-level exception player after his contract ends.
1) Terrence Jones SF 28 6'9'' 219 B- B- C- A C C
$8,000,000 $8,000,000 $8,000,000 $8,000,00
I've been offered this guy countless times, but it looks like Greeme has finally swallowed the pill and realized that he is untradeable. He has played in one game this season for all of three minutes. He is a lost cause. He'll be lucky to make the mid-level exception after his contract ends. He's a train wreck.
What I've Learned: If these are the league's worst contracts, we have some damn good GMs. None of these contracts are awful or horrendous by any stretch. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see anyone on this list outside of Jones on another team before their contract expires.
Thad could probably get expiring, so could Sexson and maybe even Jennings.
The GMs of this league should be proud for being such fiscal conservatives and making good decisions.
Pat yourselves on the back.
10) Amos Sexson SF 27 6'10'' 223 B A- B- A- C B
